Great for a new accounting student.
I purchased this book on the recommendation of a co-worker (fully qualified accountant) who used the third edition while at uni. She was spot on when she told me that it is a great help to those students who come from a non-accounting background. (i.e. no A levels in accounting).

The layout is easy to follow, great self tests along the way, case studies, real world relevent news articles and even an online site with further tests.

64

High on opinions, Low on substance - buy something else
hmmm. not an impressive read. The Author alleges to build a case to 'prove' his 18 year economic cycle theory. The 'proof' offered is poor and not convincing. I had hoped for much more than the repeated Mantra of the 18 year cycle, I get the feeling that if he states it enough as fact, then it must be true. Having recently read"The Black Swan" by Taleb, then 2010 was a real disappointment.

I suppose I should have submitted this review after reselling my copy on Amazon. oops.66

A must have for traders
This book is the most powerful book on options as it makes the dynamics of options intuitive by focussing on its economics while at the same time providing the mathematics behind it. All this is achieved by using real life investment strategies as examples. The culmination of this book is that it shows the relation between all the Greeks and the profit of a delta hedged option. The book can easily be used as a manual for traders as it gives guidelines as to when to early exercise options and the correlation exposure of composite or quanto option to name just two examples. Any trader or sales man in investment banking should use this as a manual.67

Good but we're in the UK
A very logically presented book and the underlying principles stand up to logic.

BUT, the only track record presented to support the 'magic formula' in based on the US stock markets, so how they would work in the UK (or any other) stock market is open to anyone's opinion.

OK, it's easy to trade from the UK on the US markets, but that introduces currency risks.

A good, and interesting read, but I won't be using the principles until/unless someone does some validation using historical UK data.68

Clearest best explanation of the City ever published
This is the clearest, best explanation of the City ever published. It helped me clinch a job as a City banker. I wish I'd had this book three years ago and I'd have got ahead sooner. Read it and you will understand the City and how it works. It knocks the other books into a cocked hat. Explanations of derivatives and money markets particularly clear. This book helped me take the all important overview of the City and see where the individual products fell in place. The author has a gripping style and the book is an exciting read. A previous reviewer is right that it reads sometimes like a novel. Highly recommended - you can dip into this book but it is best to read the whole thing to get the full overview.72

An excellent reference book, every student, and end user of this area should have this!
This FAQ does exactly what it says on the book cover. It explains some of the common questions of Quantitative Finance. What differentiates this from other Quant books is that it gives you the short quick answer to a topic first, then a longer explanation directly afterwards. So if the short answer is sufficient, you stop there with out having to wade thru lots of excess wordage and padded paragraphs, something quantitative finance topics often have in abundance.

A very good read, now you don't often hear that about Quantitative Finance!

73

The advice given in this book is very sound and solid and not one of these"Get rich quick on the stock market" types of books.
The principles are described in a very easy to understand manner and makes for very easy reading.
The book is more applicable to someone wanting to trade on the American markets but is also adaptable to foreign markets.

Great book for...practioners
This is an extremely well-written storybook, with a lot of jargon. However, researchers and mathematically inclined readers will be somewhat disapointed by the poor quantitative materials provided by the book. Moreover, the book does not really deal with the extensive academic literature on market microstructure - contrary to a good book written in French (La Microstructure des Marchés d'Actions, Economica, 2003) by Albert Minguet who comments and summarizes papers. But the title is NOT misleading: this book is great"for practitioners" (as well as for final BSc students / 1st year Master students who want"to get a feel about how markets work in practice"). Maybe I should have given it"5 stars" after all...76

Telling Evidence of Why We Should Invest in Index Funds
This data-rich book elucidates whether and why we should invest in index funds as our major investment portfolio. Since the author repeated again and again why he champions investing in index funds, you may find some part of this book redundant. But that's the way how the guru in Wall Street tries to coax readers into investing in the simplest way with common sense.

I have heard much about index funds before, but I didn't exactly know what the index fund is all about. Therefore, I had been rather dubious about index funds until I finished reading this book. I came to realize that I should take seriously into consideration investing in index funds as a part of my serious money portfolio. John Bogle is not the only one who espouses investing in index funds, but this book is extremely easy-to-follow and accessible when it comes to why we should invest in index funds. By the way, if you fancy more insightful academic arguments for index funds, you may take a look at 'A Random Walk Down Wall Street' by Burton G. Malkiel.77

I’ve used the work on equity risk premiums in risky countries and on the WACC heavily. It is well written and easy to read (except, of course, the heavily technical detail, which requires some thought at times).
I’ve had a quick flick through the stuff on calculating beta in the CAPM environment and wish I had this book when I was an investment banking junior. It covers common mistakes in estimating beta (some of which I made in the past) and provides an opinion on some commonly used methods.
I thoroughly recommend this book. If you practice in finance and need to know the quantitative stuff this book is indespensible.

The New Market Wizards
I have probably read almost every trading book out there over the years. As a prop trader and hedge fund manager, I found this book extremely well written and insightful for anyone interested in the industry. The managers in the book are the new breed of some of the best in the business out there. Its a great compilation of macro traders each with their own principal specialty. Its a great book for anyone interested in the business.
