The best source for photographic theory

This is an exceptional book and one that is best read by flicking through and reading litery snap shots of Sontags work. If you are about to do a photography course this is the book for you and if you have ever wondered about photography this book will inform you. I read two short quotes from this book to my father in law who has no real connection with photography, he walked away and said ’i thought a photograph was just a photograph" and asked if he could borrow the book... Thats how good it is....

Excellent Book

This is a fine wedding book. It is the most clearly organised and simply, useful, of all the wedding books I have read. The photography is consistently good throughout and it is modern without being overtly so. I very much enjoyed reading it and it provides an excellent, balanced guide to wedding photographer for photographers of all standards. Highly recommended

I too have seen this book. I'm just about to order my own copy. So inspiring and beautiful to look through the many, many pages of vibrant colour photos of both the felts and the inspiration behind them. The previous reviewer said it deserved five stars - I wonder why she only awarded it four!<br />CB

Brilliant book - essential for Speedlite novices

I've recently bought my first camera and the Canon Speedlite 580 EX to go with it. After hours on the internet I still had no idea how to use the flash. The instruction booklet is accurate, but very brief. Hence I was confused about how to set the flash up and when to use the various functions.<br /><br />This book is very detailed and has lots of clear photos and instructions on how to use the flash. Furthermore it has real world advice on which features to use for various sorts of pictures.<br /><br />As far as I know it is the only book of it's kind and essential for anyone using Canon's Speedlites for the first time. Professionals probably wouldn't get much from the book, but then it is aimed at amateurs and enthusiasts.

FASHION BIBLE!

This book is a fantastic coffee table book. It's stylish contempary layout is very simple and informative. The book is laced with excellent enspiring pictures and photos by famous photographers, designers, makeup artists etc! JUST FANTASTIC, ITS A MUST HAVE !

DO NOT BOTHER WITH THIS PIECE OF CRAP

Just bought the Marvel Encyclopedia, after reading the DC Encyclopedia and the OHOTMU and what can I say other than it was a waste of money. There are numorous inaccuracies in his book, like mistaking Captain Britain for Maelstorm and Jean Grey for Emma Frost. Most of the Marvel entries have not been updated despite the fact that some of the most important Marvel story line happend in the last year like the House of M. For example, Emma Frost's occupation is listed as Headmistress of the Massachusetts Academy. She's been with the X-Men for a considerable time now. According to the Encyclopedia, she is teaching Generation X. There is no mention of her relationship with Cyclops or the fact that she has a secondary mutation that allows her to turn to a diamond form. Anyone reading the Encyclopedia to get caught up on the Marvel U is going to be in for a surprise when they pick up the comics. <br />You'd be better off picking up the OHOTMU or the new updates which are out in comic stores.<br />

Moving from Joomla 1.0 to 1.5

I came to this book having previously implemented a Joomla 1.0 site, wanting to know what Joomla 1.5 has to offer. The depth of Barrie North's knowledge is impressive and his explanations are very clear. I found myself focussing on chapters 9 and beyond, covering templates and examples of practical site implementation, dipping back into previous chapters for reference detail. The book was written before the Joomla 1.0 to 1.5 migration process was finalised, so it doesn't cover practical migration steps. However, this topic is well documented on the Joomla site.<br /><br />Some advanced subjects are well covered, such as Google Adwords conversion, going beyond other books I have read. The book does a good job of explaining Joomla to the new user and clarifying topics for the more experienced user.<br /><br />I thoroughly recommend the book.

Put the story straight

PSE 6 is not that different to PSE5 so expecting the books to be major re-writes is a little naive. I have read and browsed a number of books on PSE6 and they only differ marginally from the previous versions but that reflects the minor upgrade in the software.<br />My advice is do not buy the book for PSE6 if you already have the PSE 5 version.<br />If you do not have any then this will prove an excellent book as so many of the others do.

More Important Than Mickey

I cannot be the only person who had become jaded by Hollywood's over use of the"Holocaust" button as a short circuit to character depth and motivation. Then I read this and was moved much more than all those movies and TV dramas could ever manage. <br /><br />As has been said elsewhere, overcome your reluctance to read and comic book/graphic novel and this book rewards with lifelong meaning and resonance. Clever, funny and desperately sad all at once. <br />

Tufte is God

I think I made Tufte very rich. If I didn’t it was not my fault. I was a Displays Manager with IBM and used his book to illustrate how colour & pixels could enhance information. I developed a presentation that used his work to exploit data and its visualisation. As a result I sold one hell of a lot of screens (IBM 3279 colour screens - the first ever colour screens - and at £3,000 a crack I sold 6,000 in the first year alone). I also sold a lot of Tufte’s books. The quite brilliant example of Minard’s graph of Napoleon’s campaign in Russia (contained within the book) would keep an audience occupied for 2 hours - and not a yawn - so if ever the Good Professor decides to make a Will, he should remember me and I hope he predececeases me by a goodly margin so I can drink to his memory in style.

I think Professor Tufte’s product is quite safe and unlikely to cause injury or death (Amazon Product Compliance Statement).

Beautiful!!!

This isn't so much a book as a labour of love. Beautifully presented, extremely clear photographs, high quality paper. It remains to be seen whether it can teach me how to make jewellery - if it can't that'll be down to me - but in any case it is a lovely book to own.

Same book ???

I am afraid i disagree with Julie Peel on her opinion of this book.It is a totally freshing , modern 21st century viewpoint using world wide examples of exemplary V.M.I have found it both informative and inspiring and i would thoroughly recommend it to all with an interest in this subject.

Nice Argument for Usability, But Misses the Application

"The Design of Everyday Things" by Donald A. Norman is said to be one of those great usability books. I bought mine at a major usability conference, believing the hype. My conclusion: Useful, but overhyped.<br /><br />Norman takes a theme that says,"Look at history and you will see how the objects we use daily are sensible and functional. Now, design websites and software likewise," and develops a complete book.<br /><br />Rats. I gave it all away. Now you do not need to buy the book, nor read any its 257 pages.<br /><br />Really, that's more or less all there is to the book.<br /><br />It is easy to read, but, in the end, becomes repetitive and is deficient in assisting the reader with application. It points out a problem we need to understand, but offers no solution. It is worth reading, but lacks as an instructional tool.<br /><br />For the dense-headed, or for someone who has never considered the arguments for thinking about function before form, the book is tremendously useful. Example after example is presented is simple terms so that readers will see that merely having a cool website is not enough.<br /><br />Where the book does not meet the mark is in the transferring the ideas into something modern, practical, and, in the case of we communications people, websites. Really good if film editing is of interest to you

Really good and very interesting.
Walter Murch is a film hero and this book goes some way to explain why. It tells in his own words how and why he works and is refreshing in that the writer talks about new technology in a positive light, despite being grounded in traditional methods.
Going in to detail about when and why we blink he takes this and talks about when to cut and how blinking so important. If the audeince blinks at the wrong time then you've lost them. ie Don't cut when the actor blinks - cut when the audeince blinks.
Stuff like that and lots more.
A modest book, jam packed with stuff to think about.
I think I'll edit my next film standing up - see if his advice helps my film.

Excellent, valuable information

I have been playing the Flute for 7 years and, even now when I come to perform, whether it be solo of as part of an orchestra, I still get nervous. This book has to be one of the best books I have read for overcoming that fear. I strongly recommend it to all musicians.

Top book even for beginners!

You don't really need an advanced knowledge of Flash to use this book. How to cheat in flash is very, very good. It is targetted mostly at cartoon animators rather than users that will want to do Action Scripting, presentation or web development. This book will guide you through from start to finish for a lot of basic animation techniques and provides a good insight into how to implement your own ideas. it also gives instruction on how to perform commands etc on both the Windows and Mac. Again, I would only recommend this book if you are into cartoon animation mainly, otherwise there are probably better books out there.
