Things a Woman Should Know About Style

Review:
Anti-fashion, Pro-classic style
The overall ethos of this is to buy expensive clothes that will last and not be a slave to fashion.

On the plus, this is a quick read which does hold your attention till the end, makes some good points and flows well. I like the tips on how to tell whether a garment fits. On the downside, this book is aimed at pearls and twinset types and is very anti-fashion. The author is also a complete snob, very smug and pretentious but don’t let that put u off- it’s bit like listening to someone’s grandmother. I also feel it’s over-priced for its content. I’m glad I got it on Ebay.

If you like to play it safe and don’t want to stand out in a crowd but still want to look groomed this is for you- its very Jeniffer Aniston/Katie Holmes/Charlotte from Sex and the City.If you’re more Kate Moss/Sienna Miller/Carrie Bradshaw then by all means read it but don’t listen to the advice till you’re about 50!

Bushido: Legacies Of The Japanese Tattoo
This was a fantastic book, with some very interesting viewpoints and information. I found the relationship between the samurai honour system and traditional japanese tattooing particularly intreguing, and the photography and sketches provided a great insight to the visual elements described in this book. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to know a bit more!

The Body Shape Bible: Forget Your Size Discover Your Shape Transform Yourself

Used Price: £0.01
New Price: £0.01

Review:
Helpful in parts
As a fan of T and S i bought this hoping it would advise me of the right styles for my shape which i must say that it did however the book is heavily padded out with other info which is not at all helpful if your not that shape. the part relevent to your own shape is only about 5 pages long and then the majority of the rest of the book is about all the other shapes. I'd recommend either borrowing this from the library and scanning the pages relevant to your shape for future ref or buying it from amazon then selling it on. it won't be a classic

Wacky Chicks: Life Lessons from Fearlessly Inappropriate and Fabulously Eccentric Women

Our Price: £5.00
Used Price: £1.87
New Price: £2.04

Review:
Life Lessons from Incredible Women!
Simon Doonan celebrates a series of eccentric, flamboyant and incredibly eccentric women, in the way only an equally fabulous gay man can! <br /><br />'Wacky Chicks' are B.R.U.N.C.H. (belligerent, resilient, uninhibited, creative and hilarious)These are women who do what they want and don't care what anyone thinks about it....they do pro-choice protests outside abortion clinics dressed as Satan, they are 'alternative' cheerleaders who sing chants about body fascism, they communicate with birds and they sell slashed spandex body suits. The lard-napalm incident with his gran (referred to as the more descriptive narg) is worth the price of the book alone.<br /><br />This book is like a big injection of life in the arm, not only are these women incredible but Doonan as narrator frequently had me in hysterics. His thoughts on nudist colonies? 'I myself am more cautiously enthusiastic: the sight of grown people in various states of physical fitness frying their genitalia on public beaches can really put one off one's pasta salad.'<br /><br />Do yourself a favour, buy this book and ditch the personality-less celebs that pass for role-models these days!<br />

The Handbag Beauty Bible

Our Price: £6.69
Used Price: £0.01
New Price: £1.61

Review:
A great book to dip into
It's great that there are many more product categories included in this book than in the original Beauty Bible. The disappointing thing however is that the reviews for the original categories are exactly the same, in my opinion new tests should have been carried out on these as well, producing new (different?) reviews. <br />This book lacks the general information about skin care, perfume and make-up but that is understandable as this is the handbag version. Good advice on buying and testing and choosing suitable shades etc. is given in the beginning. Very much recommended.

THE FASHIONISTA BIBLE
I feel Rachels book of pure glamour and inspiration opened up a whole new way of thinking viewing fashion not just as art on catwalks but good advice on how to make you feel and look like a fashionista everyday.<br /><br />Its taking old school glamour and putting your own modern twist on outfits she does this so well and you can see it on the celebrities she styles such as Mischa Barton to name a few, if like me you love mixing vintage and modern then this book is for you.

Mod: Clean Living Under Very Difficult Circumstances - A Very British Phenomenon

Our Price: £14.99
Used Price: £15.15
New Price: £14.01

Review:
One view of mod only I'm afraid
An interesting book and worth owning - until you get to 1979! I suspect Terry Rawlings doesn't like or know anything about black music since the whole last section of the book is a concerted attempt to downplay the vital importance of soul/r'n'b events to the mod lifestlye. Yes, bands like the Chords were a big deal for about 10 seconds but then (thank god) anyone with an ounce of taste and sense discovered that 60s soul and r'n'b was really where it was at - and you didn't have to be an elitist to get into it contrary to what some think. The guy should have interviewed someone like Randy Cozens for a proper view of things. And, Terry, mods actually did exist in large numbers outside London!

Review:
a good book for those interested in make up
I brought this book several years ago when i was teenager and wanting to know more about make-up..as i was in the stage of too much blusher and blue eyeshadow!.It wasnt until a few years later that i got the book again and actually took note of what was in it.<br /><br /> The book features several different areas of make-up and also skincare and how to take care of the rest of your body.Over all its more than a make up book, its a well being book aswell. The pictures and diagrams are extremely helpful and it takes into account many different races and skintones aswel as different facial shapes...such as eye shape and cheek bones. It also mentions the different types of brushes, colour toners and other types of tools one may have heard of but have never been shown how to use.I myself learned how to use liquid eyeliner from this book!.<br /><br />Over all this book holds a place in my heart, as i am now training to become a make-up artist and this book i believe was the start of it all.If you are already a trained make up artist or take an active interest in make up already this book will hold very little new information (unless you are unsure about entering the profession..as this may be a great starter book like it was for me, as other professinal books are very expensive)but if you are just getting into make up or want to learn more then this is the book for you.Whatever age or colour or level of make up use you may be.As it features something for everyone.Highly recommened.

The Beginner's Guide to Colour Psychology (Beginners Guide to)

Our Price: £8.44
Used Price: £6.80
New Price: £7.04

Review:
Interesting book
This is a really facinating read and I would recomend it to anyone interested in how the colours around them affects how they feel in their life. It's written in a very down to earth practical way, and is very much rooted in action and practical aplication. I have a few issues with some of the things she says, for example insisting that pink as a colour for the"feminine" is psychological rather than cultural, and at one point she makes a comment about women who cut their hair short"not allowing their true nature to show", a comment which I think shows more about her own issues and predjuces than those of the people she's talking about.

Perfect guide for beginners
As a make-up student, I found this book really helpful. The information provided on the tools, skin types, cleansing, toning etc were very practical and easy to follow. <br /><br />The book also has little 'nuggets of wisdom' known as trade secrets. I hope everyone finds this book as useful as I did.

A solid foundation of holistic massage for beauty therapy students!
Francesca Gould writes in her own very informative style. As with many other books written by her; such as her book: Aromatherapy for Holistic Therapists; this book is again written with great expertise and sound knowledge of the subject area she is writing about. As with all her books they provide the foundation for the subject and are useful for tutors to plan lessons and also for students taking courses of beauty therapy and holistic therapies. First class instruction!
