Nothing new
I was extremely disappointed with the number of airbrushed photos in this book. Some of the subjects just looked ridiculous (Liza Minneli as Marilyn) and the methods used are well known to anyone who works in make-up. I did think it was good that he pointed out how beauty 'rules' should be avoided and that the eyebrows should not be overlooked.... though I expected more. This is best suited to a beginner.63

So far so good.....
Decided to give this book a go. What I like about it is the fact you have a section for everything - what is cellulite ? Before and after photos, suggested food for the month, salon treatments and excersise programme.

Everything is reasonable or achievable. The food is not out of the ordinary so it's good on the purse, the exercises are not over powering or difficult and there are loads of hints and tips on creams and even advice on salon treatments if you budget allows.

The before and after photos of people who have done this plan are encouraging and although only a week in I am seeing and feeling a difference.

65

Okay for young teens
I thought this book would be better than it was. Its an american book and although it uses american slang words it easy to understand, it does however refer to american cosmetics which aren't available in the uk. It has useful character building chapters to improve your confidence which are useful and well written. The make-up application tips are quite basic and if you are already using make-up you will know most of it already.A good book for pre-teens and young teens who are just starting to use make-uop

Fine for complete beginners
This book has lots of basic information on what to put and where to put it but I thought that some of the looks (maybe it was the photography) were not flattering to the models at all. For that reason I didn't find it inspiring at all.68

Fantastic! Theres everything you need to know.
I found this book really good. It's the make up Bible for all women who want to feel and look good. Theres noting more that could be added to it. It goes through each part of your face and gives you great tips on which makeup would be best for your skin type and occasion. It also gives you information on which make up would compliment a certain part of your face. I would recommend it to anyone. I certainly give it two thumbs up!71

The book contained everything I needed to do my course work
This book is written in plain english, all the technical terms are explained fully in easy to understand terms. I have not had to look at another book. I have puchased this again after misplacing my first copy and would not attend collage without it. All the diagrams are well presented and easy to follow.73

Definitely one of the better make-up books
A sizeable part of this book is made up of remarkable before and after pictures of women of all ages and all races. It is reassuring that they don't all look like models too. He also writes about the importance of good skincare and then goes into the basic application of all aspects of makeup.

I found this book to be very up-to-date in recommending suitable colours for every skintone and ethnicity. Robert Jones describes his 'look' as 'glam girl next door' and it really comes across in the methods and colours he uses. If you are into 'way-out' looks you will probably find this boring as he is more concerned with emphasising one's features in a natural way, almost like Bobbi Brown's approach.

Here are my (few) critisicms. The 'after' photograps look very photoshopped and please correct me if I'm wrong Robert! He also seems to be a big advocate of contouring but I can't see how that works outside of photography. It is also geared towards only one fully made up look and doesn't give much guidance for seasonal variation or make up for low-key events.

All in all though it is definitely worth looking at especially for brides and even the mother of the bride!75

Excellent Book on the Mod movement
This is the ideal follow up to Richard Barnes' Mods and is a well written record of the Mod movement. Forget the views of the elitists who make comments about the"appalling 1979 revival" - if it wasn't for that revival and the bands that led it there would have been no Mod scene in the 80's or 90's - something that those who are quick to condemn are quick to overlook76

Brutally honest but absolutely invaluable.
The title says it all really. This book made me have a good hard look at myself and have some eye-opening revelations about my wardrobe. Having used this guide to enlighten myself about what I was doing wrong, I found it much easier to pare my wardrobe down and stop kidding myself that I would ever wear those clothes again!79
Review:
Paula Begoun confirms a lot of what were already my suspicions, ie that a lot of beauty counters sell us creams and potions that promise the world and don't come near to delivering.
What's special about 'Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me' is that Paula Begoun has done the ground-work, she's had the ingredients of said creams analysed and tried the make-up out on real people so that what she writes is something we can all relate to.
Obviously there's a certain amount of subjective opinion but that's something she admits to and recommends that we use our own judgement along with hers.
The book has easy to follow icons that guide you along so you can sit and dip in and out of the book or if you're a real make-up freak like me have a good peruse.
My only criticism is that for us Brits a lot of the product we know and love aren't included and there are some which sound great but aren't available in the UK.
Paula- PLEASE BRING OUT A BRITISH VERSION- I think it will be snapped up like the proverbial hot cake or should that be pan-cake (excuse the pun).

Don't buy that lipstick.Not yet...Read this first
When this mighty tome arrived I wasn't sure what to expect. I'd bought it on the spur of the moment after seeing it recommended on a website. Despite the fact that I'm unlikely ever to heave this weighty book around Boots or SuperDrug, I'm glad I bought it.Paula Begoun confirms a lot of what were already my suspicions, ie that a lot of beauty counters sell us creams and potions that promise the world and don't come near to delivering.

Splendid Guide to Elegant, Timeless Dressing
Alan Flusser's beautiful book is essential if you have an interest in how to dress elegantly and timelessly. The book covers both business and, to some extent, casual attire. The knowledgeable text is accompanied by a marvellous collection of photographs and illustrations. If you are the type of man that watches Cary Grant and admires his suits as much as his acting, this book will delight you.
