Buy BEFORE you start your dissertation!
I started my dissertation very late - too late - and bought this book to help me through. It's a very simple, uncomplicated book which helps you set out your dissertation in the right way and guide you through the process of planning it, writing it, and checking it.

Also, as it is written by an ex lecturer the advice is coming from the right sort of person. There is a checklist at the back of the book which helps you mark your own piece of work and check that you've done the basics. It also has some useful tips yo help you avoid the most common errors.

I managed to get a First for my dissertation, thanks largely to this book. But save yourself rushing about like I did if you can, and buy this simple little book early, before you start!43

bite-sized surprises
I've only just started this and I've liked what I've read so far. But there's one statistical bloomer on pp22-23 (in the"Magnetic Middle" chapter). They talk about energy consumption in the neighbourhood versus the average and say"Of course, half of the households consumed more energy than the average, whereas the other half consumed less". There is no"Of course" - they are implictly assuming here a normal distribution, but we are not told that, so"Of course" is IMO a little disingenuous. Take eg 10 users, 9 consume 10000 units each, 1 consumes 1000 units. You will find here that 9 have above average comsumption, and one below.

Just thought I'd point that out ......
45

Intriguing look inside the head of a million-dollar trader
This trading-room memoir harks back to a group of novices whom experts recruited in the 1980s and - to fulfill a bet - trained to be traders. The training worked, according to the most successful student, author Curtis M. Faith. His memoir promises what any capitalist would love to possess: the secret to making money in volatile markets. Alas, Faith tells us, there is no secret. Successful traders analyze markets to find an edge, then remain disciplined enough to pursue that edge, even when their hearts and their guts try to overrule their brains. In spite of constant references to Donchian channels and Sharpe ratios, Faith assures readers that trading isn't a matter of using secret formulas but of applying time-tested wisdom. His tome is intriguing because it lets you inside the thoughts of someone who made $30 million as a trader (so no wonder he tends toward the self-congratulatory, though his anecdotes are entertaining). We recommend this to traders seeking an advantage and to those who want to watch the experts try to beat the odds.48

I'm not too sure who would benefit from reading this book. New coaches - I doubt it. Those aspiring to coaching - not really. Managers in corporations - definitely.
This is definitely not a self development book but therin lies its power. This book is for those who truly desire to be more effective in their work, their relationships and with their teams.
Sir John gives practical guidance and a model which really does work. I read the book, put it into practice and saw results.
A little too theoretical and academic at times but well worth perservering. Worth the read. Come on Sir john how about a sequel.

Absolutely Ridiculous
This book is so Ridiculous I barely know where to start. A well meaning friend bought this book for me as he himself was halfway through it and thought it was 'amazing', I believe he even had pictures of things he 'wanted ' stuck up on his wall which the universe was going to provide. It truly is a complete joke of a book, any level headed individual will either read it and find it hilarious or read it and become quite angry, my reaction to its drivel was a mixture of the two.

This book is an insult to history, economics, Physics, Maths, Chemistry and Biology!

Rhonda Byrne has been watching far too much Living TV
50

read the title... it is quite clear who this book is aimed at
This book has been harshly reviewed by people who have knowledge of NLP:"don't read this book if you know anything about NLP" is apparently the take home message. Fine. But that is kind of like telling a rocket scientist not to bother reading a pre-school chemistry book!

For those who no nothing about NLP, i.e. the intended demographic, this is a great book with plenty of examples relating the theory to real life. Sure, it isn't advanced NLP but you can't run before you can walk.

I am a complete beginner and this book captured my imagination and made me think more analytically about my actions, thoughts and communication skills. My advice is go to a book store and read a chapter or two before making your mind up.52

Really useful - ideally read in along with more practical guides to interviews, CVs & handling recruitment consultants etc etc
Well known as an excellent guide for first jobbers and career changers, to help find your way. It's success is well deserved although personally I found the spiritual elements a little out of place for my tastes, but maybe I'm just a heathen. Generally speaking it's a really useful book, but deals more with the soul searching side of a job hunt and less with the practical side. Definitely useful, but personally I'd recommend it being used in conjunction with some more practical books for example a good CV book ("Brilliant CV" is excellent), a good interview book"Brilliant Interview" is great) and something practical relating to the job search process itself (an excellent book that covers alot of vital areas that others don't even begin to touch upon is"How to Handle Your Recruitment Consultant").53

The diagnostic test at the front helped me to determine where I needed to spend my study time, which cut down on what I thought I needed to study.
Also, the practise questions are in order from easiest to hardest for every section, so I knew that when I started having trouble I was in a harder section. It gave me a lot of help!
My weakness is in quantitative skills, so I also purchased The Official Guide for GMAT Quantitative Review for extra practise. The basic information in the book is the same, but the questions were again, very helpful.
Oh and there are extra score sheets in the back if you mess up or want to practise more.
If you want more practise without the answer explanations.

Great study Guide
I also felt compelled to write after reading the first review. I think this book is extremely helpful! And I felt better using this book than others because it is made using real GMAT questions from past tests. So you know the material is the real thing. Apparently because it is written by the people who write the GMAT exam, it is the only study guide that can use real questions. The diagnostic test at the front helped me to determine where I needed to spend my study time, which cut down on what I thought I needed to study.

Brilliant in parts, dangerously foolish in others
I've the greatest sympathy with this book's concept in many respects. Rob correctly identifies the overriding need to reduce energy dependence, and that we must not wait for"them" to do anything about it, or even help us. Correctly he sees that we need a"how-to" manual for how to make communities (rather than just the reader) self-sufficient in food and so on. But the devil is in the practical details, or more precisely the practical unknowns which are all too easily glossed over.

The book gets hideously, dangerously misguided in its important section on psychology, with its notion of the importance of a"positive vision". History is bursting full of"positive visions" which ended in huge disasters. Instead, what is needed is a judiciously realistic vision. It is vitally important to recognise that criticism and doubt are just as important as hope and"constructive""enthusiastic" thinking. Otherwise huge energy and effort is almost certain to be lost in enthusing down disastrous dead-ends.

In a traumatised society, many people become lost to despair, depression, negativity. But there is the equal problem that too many people desperately pin their hopes on"positive" but false solutions which ultimately fail them.

Someone said that the transition concept has been"phenomenally successful". That is seriously unhinged fantasy. There hasn't yet been a transition to test out how or even whether the ideas work out in practice.
You need to be very careful to avoid assuming that action is the same as achievement of solutions, or that international fame and crowds of enthusiastic followers is the same as success in solving the problem.

I would strongly urge the author to revise the psychology section of his book to take account of these comments. The importance of a realistic vision.55

Essence of sage
Cunningham has done us a great favour. Buffett doesn't talk to the press and most books claiming to be Buffett bibles are re-hashes and interpretations, so this book of essays is the closest you will get to hearing it straight from the horse's mouth. This is Buffett's wisdom distilled from annual letters to shareholders in his company, which Cunningham has strung together seamlessly. Although that means alot of passages refer to Buffett's own firm and its shareholdings, the lessons for investors are universal, and the"value investing" philosophy shines through. If that was all there was to recommend the book it would still be a must-have for anyone interested in making money. But it is also a great read.
Buffett comes across as the most genial, honest and no-nonsense guy in the financial world. He also has a wonderfully impish sense of humour and had me chuckling out loud (and then trying in vain to explain the joke to my girlfriend...) The only bits where he slightly lost me was when comparing investing with baseball, but I think I got the gist of it. Anyway, Buffett writes as clearly as he thinks and is as modest and self-deprecating as he is authoritative. He treats his readers like the investors they are, so this is not an"entry level" book and it might be a struggle if you don't know the difference between a fixed asset and a preference share, but otherwise it is a book that you won't regret buying.
I can't recommend it highly enough.56

Will change your view of PowerPoint forever
I've followed Garr Reynolds blog at PresentationZen for ages now as a source of inspiration and ideas for using slideware. This book is a brilliant summary of all that advice and more. Garr sets out the argument for using PowerPoint and Keynote as visual support tools to the main event (that's you). So far, so good but what really makes this a must buy is that the book is stuffed with concrete practical examples of how to do it. Even better, all the slides and images he uses are referenced so that you can find them online and use them yourself - there is even an offer from iStockphoto of some free images. All in all, a brilliant counterpoint to all the traditional"how to use PowerPoint" books that are out there.57

The dissertation that never was...
I am a Computer Science student, but originally I studied Communication. When I started my communication degree I knew I would write my dissertation on how the internet has affected communication, but I changed degree and instead built a facebook application. This book has taken my two big passions in life and combined them in a way that I continually attempt to, and in a much more eloquent style than I could ever achieve.
Clay continually uses examples that for anyone who uses web resources on a daily basis can relate to. He takes these examples and highlights not only the positives that they have generated, but their limitations too. His insight into what we previously believed to be technological implications shows us that indeed they are not technological, but human social limitations. Coupled with the depth of compassion towards humans, Clay continually reminds me that humans are essentially good but require the tools to be able to put that goodness into practice.
My favourite part is his comparison of the internet and web to the printing press pushing aside the scribes. I truly believe that we're watching the birth of a new cultural revolution, Clay sees it and the examples I have taken away from his writing allow me to show the changes to my friends and family that otherwise lay blind to it.
If you are even slightly interested in the web, communication, or modern culture then you must read this book. Thanks Clay for writing such an insightful and positive guide to this culture's birth.58

I found Persuasion an easy and an extremely useful read. I especially liked the how-to style of the book and its specific Dos and Don'ts rather than merely presenting the concepts or ideas behind the approach. I thought most chapters were well written and genuinely useful, but while some contained real nuggets, I felt that a couple of chapters that provided little more than padding.

I do however strongly recommend this book.

59

Superb Toolbook for Reference!!
It is a great guide for Six Sigma, I bought it because I took quite a lot of lectures on different Six Sigma topics at University, but now that I'm working I needed to refresh my mind and this book has proven to be very handy in terms of reference. Now, half of my time is destined to Six Sigma Projects and this toolbook has helped me to keep the Six Sigma Structure when doing a project, as well as referring to different statistical tools which I might have forgotten. I would highly recommend this book if you have already a background knowledge of Six Sigma, but if you are just starting with this methodology I would advice to look for more in-deep books.60
