Psycho-cybernetics

Used Price: £6.75

Review:
Unconscious changes show in dreams
Over the years I have had a recurring theme in dreams. In the dreams, my boss is waiting for the results of a project I should have finished. He doesn't know I'm behind schedule, and I try to hide the fact. Because of this I'm on the edge of being stressed out.
After reading (half of)"Psycho-cybernetics", one night I went into the same dream scenario, except that my 'boss' was pleased with the finished project and there was no stress.
I realised that the 'boss' is myself, and that certain changes to my image of myself are really happening.
I have started on a few actual projects which I had been putting off, and I feel good about it.
I expect that by the time I have been through the book a couple of times and have put the exercises into practice, I will have started to earn a very acceptable income and I will have also made our home and garden the way we've wanted for several years, but never got round to.
A truly inspirational read!

Mastermind specialist subject: Stating the obvious
This book may be useful for many people, so this is really just a warning for anyone with a fairly developed sense of self awareness and understanding. 99% of the text really just states the very basics of work and career choices and includes such uninspiring 'gems' such as"it's worth remembering that work is not the only part of your life". Thanks Anita. If you've never thought about life, self-purpose, significance etc, then I'm sure this will get you thinking. For anyone who's looking for ideas above these stations, then rest assured, this will not provide any help to you. Any thinkers out there...you have been warned!

Not quite there yet
Sahar Hashemi is clearly very motivated and creative.
In this book, I believe the intention was to leave the reader feeling the same way.

Unfortunately it just didn't deliver. It feels like it needs more editing - ideally including more material about the psychological aspects of business success and creativity, rather than just telling people to"get out there" and"get into their customers' shoes".

Most of the content is common sense. Or other people's quotations. Or lists of things to do.

It's got a lot of"what", but is curiously short on"how".

It doesn't really deal with the underlying issues that keep so many people missing out on promotion or business opportunities.

As a mentor of both senior managers and entrepreneurs, I regularly see that the issue preventing most of us from being truly creative, succeeding in business and changing the world is usually a limiting belief or deep-rooted fear.

Without addressing the unconscious blocks that have been holding us back, no amount of pep talk is going to shift things.

So if you're one of the lucky ones who has fearlessly broken free from their limiting beliefs, but hasn't yet worked out that success in business comes down to enjoying what you do and knowing your customer, then this book might still have something to teach you.

Otherwise, you might want to save 4 hours of your life and try something else instead!
Five steps to asserting yourself in business
Dale Carnegie was the original self-help guru. His book How to Win Friends and Influence People is a classic. First published in 1936, it has sold 15 million copies and remains popular. Carnegie's ability to inspire people is legendary. This contemporary bestseller from the Dale Carnegie Training organization distills Carnegie's teachings about business relationships into five common-sense principles for creating positive, persuasive interactions. getAbstract recommends it to up-and-comers who want to learn how to be assertive in an effective way. You can use this book's clear"action steps" to change how you relate to others, win their cooperation and approval, and build your assertiveness and self-confidence.

The Rules of Work: A Definitive Code for Personal Success

Our Price: £7.28
Used Price: £3.25
New Price: £5.49

Review:
The Reality of Office Life
For someone starting out on their career, wishing to move up the corporate ladder or seeking to clarify their attitude to work I recommend this book as a simple, but slightly flawed, overview of the typical office temperament and politics. The book contains 108 rules, all presented in a succinct, neat and very readable format. Some of the rules and Templar's anecdotes are quite interesting and/or funny, which, when combined with his friendly style, make this very readable.

How much you get out of this book will depend on your level of experience, desire for conformity in your working attitude and the type of job that you do. The rules primarily describe an ideal (in Templar's mind), ambitious (but affable), highly competent (but smarmy) white collar office worker or manager, although most are general enough to be applicable to other professions. They give (sometimes obvious) advice on how to: stand out from the crowd (for the right reasons), act up for promotion, deal with other people, present yourself, organize effectively, know your corporation etc.

The depth of advice, although comprehensive, is fairly basic, but is at the right level for a book of this type. Any more analytical and both readability and practicality would suffer. Some of the rules seemingly contradict and overlap, which Templar seems to just ignore. However these areas of ambiguity can be easily spotted and resolved as the reader sees fit.

Also, there is a slight underlying feeling of disingenuousness with some of the rules, especially with those that advocate being nice. Although sincerity does get a mention, it's only briefly and after a long paragraph detailing the material advantages of this attitude. There is a part titled"If you can't say anything nice - shut up" which, when combined with his references to other workers as"worker ants" and other derogatory terms equals smarminess in my mind.

Anyway, the above criticisms are a relatively small aspect of the whole, nearly all of the rules are sensible and affable; the reader can adjust what he doesn't like at his own discretion using his personal experience. Also, as a description of the reality of typical office life this book is pretty much spot on and following these rules will definitely help you to work the system. However it will only give you the"edge in everything you do, without having to compromise your principles" if your principles don't include not being smarmy.
Excellent book, when mixed with common sense
I bought this book in a bit of a rush just after I had been invited on my first assessment centre - and I got the job!

The book is easy to read (shouldn't take more than two evenings to cover all the sections) and tells you what to expect at an assessment centre and gives a few example scenarios/tests at the same time.

Not everything that you can expect at an assessment centre is covered in the book, however it does give you an idea of how to behave and what the assessors are looking for.

comedy toolkit
I have bought a number of stand-up comedy books, done a few gigs (failed to beat the frog, gonged off at the comedy store) and even took a part time course. If I'd had this book to start with I would have progressed further a lot quicker. This is a very practical manual which will have you writing your own material very soon. It helps you decide which type of comic you want to be, and shows you how to play to your strengths. It's a good book at a good price, and in my view should be top of your list.

The Millionaire Next Door

Review:
A Brilliant Synopsis of What It Takes To Become Rich
This book, changed my conception of what it was to be wealthy. I always had thought that wealth was represented by Rolls Royce's, Patek Philippe watches, expensive houses etc etc etc. This book will blow your mind, if you believe these things represent wealth.
The premise of the book, is that there are usually 3 kinds of"rich" people, the super rich that can afford the absolute luxuries without problem, the ones who look wealthy, the cars, lifestyle etc, but have nothing in the bank, they are all front, and the ones who are wealthy but live simple non dazzle lifstyles.

What this book teaches the student of wealth, is that to look wealthy is not the same as being wealthy. Looking wealthy is a falacy, that can lead you to finacial ruin. Throughout the book it gives real life examples. What would you prefer a new Rolls Royce, or a 5 year old Rolls but an addtional $50,000 in the bank from the savings you make on buying second hand? The upfront keep up with the Jones's will buy the new one, the true millionaire will buy the older car, and invest the saved capital and make money on the investment. Capital should not be spent, only intrest off the capital should be spent on depreciating luxury items.

This book has changed my life. I lived a life of"luxury" believing that I could afford it. This book gave me a diffrent perspective on wealth, and my competitve spending stopped, and my wealth has soared. I now live 50% under my wage, instead of 100% of my wage. I love saving and investing money, instead of spending. I know that wealth is not about lifestyle, but what is truely in the bank.

The book must be read in conjunction with, The Richest Man In Babylon, The Greatest Salesman in the World and The Science of Getting Rich.

This is a book that could be used by a marketing guru, on how to sell products to the 3 social classes mentioned, or it can be used by the aspiring rich. Used by those who aspire wealth it will show them that flash lifestyles can create finacial ruin. Prudence, sacrafice and wise investing can make a millionaire out of anyone. The keys are in this book.

Massive Action = Massive Results
I read the reviews of the other readers and as usual I went with my gut instinct and bought this book and I have to say, I was not disappointed!!

I really, really did enjoy this book, as there is something refreshing, wholesome and honest about the author's style and I am sure, that you, like me will be hooked from page 1.

The book covers several excellent, or should I say Brilliant chapters like: Brilliant Belief Systems, Brilliant Goal-Setting, Brilliant Vision and my favourite Brilliance into Action, which is ultimately what it all boils down to.

I am now looking forward to reading other books written by Michael Heppel, yet there is no point in reading another book until all the recommended tasks are completed from this book.
Too easy for UKCAT
I bought this book for some additional UKCAT practice. It was great for basic revision of commonly used formulae, but the UKCAT section was not as taxing as the test itself. I found the 600 UKCAT questions book better for this, as the questions are tougher and really set you up for the test.

I've given this book a 4 star rating though, because the tips about preparing for numeracy tests was really good.

Self Leadership and the One Minute Manager: Discover the Magic of No Excuses!

Our Price: £4.35
Used Price: £2.56
New Price: £2.68

Review:
Situation Leadership from the employee perspective
Whilst the original One Minute Manager title focussed on how to Manage others effectively, and much of the series has followed suit; this title seeks to look upon the models from the perspective of the individual. See this as Situational Leadership from the perspective of the person being Managed.

As with all titles the key points are recapped well and theories are set out and explained in a language that is easy to access for all.

This title is one for a person who finds themself ineffective in changed situations and struggles to break through. Whilst this is not a book about Change itself, really the focus here is on recognising self-development needs and getting them fulfilled, it does have a role to play in the respect that our needs change as situations do.

A recommended text.
