Greene might be the man you least want as a friend, but he's one hell of a writer!
I own all the Greene/Joost Elffers books and I must say that until reading this book his book on Power was one of the few books I reread regularly, owning both the full and the concise version. War, however, in my opinion surpasses Power in terms of its relevance to how we live our lives. We come into conflict with others every day, and the techniques used in the book, taken from the true masters of strategy such as Sun Tzu and Napoleon, will help you not only face these conflicts but do so in such a way that others will think twice about crossing you ever again.

I don't know whether Greene wrote these books as a bit of fun or whether he follows the principles, but you have got to wonder how these journals will be seen in the future. Anyone who saw the first series of The Contender will know that one of the boxers used"Power" to manipulate the other boxers into fighting each other...and the only mistake he made was to be seen reading the bloomin' book! In other words, the principles work in real life! Get War and Power, and consider Seduction too...and you will be armed and deadly, and the confidence that brings will actually ensure a QUIETER life through increased reputation.

My only moan is that there is no concise edition to War...so I can have it with me at all times! Saddo!83

Excellent!
I learnt some really interesting facts here - the things women do really are unconscious! I read this book to help with the literature review of my uni dissertation but found it so interesting, I've recommended it to others. I am now much more aware of my own 'unconscious' mistakes and other peoples... Really good book!84

Not for everyone...
When I saw this book I thought I had found exactly what I needed. From the title I was expecting it would cover all sorts of diagrammatic tests yet I was wrong. It may be right for people taking tests for IT jobs but I did not find it useful for my interview with a professional service firm. It does not cover the input-type diagrammatic tests, the ones with symbols that change figures and objects, otherwise called abstract thinking. I would not recommend it if you're going for an accountancy interview.
85

Interesting story
As per some of the other reviews I agree about the arrogance of the author of which I have no empathy for, unlike some other con men that I have read about, one of which is Howard Marks (as stated by a previous reviewer) I recommend this as a good read.
This book tells the story of how Nigel Goldman swindled and stole his way to millions, leaving the lives of his victims in tatters. However this point does not really concern Mr Goldman, at least he is honest enough (just!) to admit it! I don't fully agree with the title :how I blew 14 million, as he deals with this aspect in a few short sentances and states that he does not really know where all this money went to!
I would recommend buying this book, but don't expect to feel any sympathy for the author!

86

"Pitch Yourself" drove me to totally reexamine the way I approached the CV process. First, it began with the need to really understand myself, who I am, in order to uncover my competencies. Second, I had to forget everything I thought I knew about CV's, listing my accomplishments, utilizing elaborate wording in order to impress the reader, hoping that the reader would assume I could accomplish similar success in the new position. Instead I reoriented the proposition of my CV from what I had done to what I will do, based on my competencies.
My success has caused quite the stir at my school because of the obvious power that this book possesses.
You will stand out from the crowd and you will offer the reader tangible evidence of the abilities you will deliver by positively answering the crucial question every CV reviewer has,"What do you offer me?"

It's simple; 0 for 6 before the book, 4 for 4 since the book
My story is simple, I'm an MBA student and I sent my CV out to over 15 companies hoping for an interview and didn't get one. After reading and applying the principles found in"PITCH YOURSELF" I've sent my CV to 6 companies, so far, and I have been invited to 6 to interviews!"Pitch Yourself" drove me to totally reexamine the way I approached the CV process. Stories Are Gateways to Personal Development
This is a worthy successor to 'The magic of metaphor'. Once again there is a fine collection of stories, old and new, woven around the author's personal story. This is juxtaposed with powerful theories of human development. You can approach the collection in any way you like - read it in linear fashion, dip in and out, read randomly. Whatever you do with this book it will reward you - personally and, if you are an educator, professionally.89

Astonishingly practical and enlightening
This book is profoundly good. Do not let the artificial sounding title put you off - it contains chapter after chapter of elegantly written guidance for living. It is evident in the writing that this is the result of not years but decades of observation by Maltz. The chapter on negative emotional habits is in itself worth the money. I bought the book to try to resolve 11 years of tension headaches. After reading teh first chapter, I stopped reading in order to try out some ideas. The headaches are improving, but almost as importantly, I have learnt so much more about myself. Not speculative, extrapolated ideas of the author, but the result of close observations of patients who were councelled before cosmetic surgery. In many cases, the intended facial surgery was canceled, to be replaced by surgery of attitude.I cannot recommend it highly enough.

So much more to ebay than I realised
I have been selling on ebay for a few years, only in small quantities and as a hobby, but I thought I knew quite a lot. Having read this book I realised I knew nothing. For example simple things such as whether your item title will show up in a buyers search, is it misspelt, have you left out vital information. Stuff that's really obvious when you think about it, but I hadn't been. It's also meant that I have profited from other's mistakes, buying items that have been badly marketed for a much cheaper price! My sales have definitely improved and I've streamlined how I work. The one thing he doesn't tell me, is where I can find cheap stock!
Since reading Dan's book I've spent a lot more time looking around ebay, getting ideas on what works, checking out what's selling well and considering how I might open a shop when I have more time.93

Invaluable text
I am currently completing my Social Work BA (Hons) Degree and came across this text book by chance. I am so glad I did! It has been an invaluable book for me, each chapter is well written and easy to read without too much jargon, a problem I find in a lot of academic text books! It is written to be understood from a student perspective and I wish more text books were written in this way. I am on my first year but I feel this book will be a great help throughout my studies. My friend borrowed it from me and has since ordered her own copy as she was so impressed. I would recommend this book without hesitation as it will be an excellent tool in most of your assignments as I have found out!94

Nice little guide
This should be compulsory reading for the many B&B owners in the UK who do not achieve a 'quality' standard, and will be invaluable for anyone setting up in the business. It is full of a massive amount of practical advice with appropriate degrees of importance stressed, from the 'nice' to the legal necessities.
For the size of the book it is extremely comprehensive, but I'd have liked the same content spread over slightly more pages with bigger / clearer print. There are margin notes/topic headers printed pale blue on pale blue(!) that is almost impossible to read and is of doubtful value - it just clutters up the pages. Make sure you have your reading glasses to hand!97

A really practical book
If you find people walk all over you, or if you walk all over other people, and want to change you'll find this book to be really practical. Actually, it's not really a"book" in the sense of a"read", more of a pocket reference with bullet-point"tips" on how to be assertive with people. Nothing particularly new in the information it presents, but laid out in an easy-to-read manner. And it works!99

A great book.!
This book is truly inspirational. It is one of the most informative, interesting and exciting books that I have read! The Art of Learning looks at the human condition with a great deal of insight and understanding.
Josh Waitzkin's understanding of the learning process is extremely pertinent and useful.

Waitzkin's knowledge of Chess and Tai Chi at the highest levels gives him a truly insightful awareness of the human condition in competition and under other forms of stress.
Situations that have heightened his perceptions of time and place, aware of these changed and altered states he has turned these issues to his advantage. Throughout his career he has overcome the greatest difficulties and setbacks to achieve his goals.

The over riding sensation in reading this book is Waitzkin's ability to progress and improve! In reading his accounts of his almost transcendental like states one becomes physically and mentally stronger, one becomes aware of ones potential and worth!

His Touch Hands World Finals in Taiwan, 2004, was a buzz to read.

I will be using his techniques too enhance the quality of my life and I will certainly recommend The Art of Learning to my friends.
I wish him every success in the future.

Ben Quinn.
100
Review:
Written in a clear and concise style and packed with practical exercises and fun illustrations the writer is able to transfer the theory of emotional intelligence and its varying components into real life scenarios which any reader can relate to. The inclusion of a self-assessment questionnaire is a real bonus and enables the reader to establish where they are now and how they can develop on the Emotional Intelligence components.
If you are involved in the use of Emotional Intelligence within the work environment there is a section dedicated to the development of the Emotionally Intelligent organisation, which includes the use of Emotional Intelligence as a change management strategy.
Overall, this book is easy to read and understand with the range of practical exercises providing the opportunity to put theory into practice. A good practical introduction to a complex subject this book may be small in size but is large on content. I can highly recommend it.

excellent guide..
ok firstly, id like to say that this is a great book, however it is not magic and you do need to put in the hours to get results (as with most things worth learning i suppose) .. this is my first effort at trying to improve my reading so unfortunately i cannot compare it to any of the other books out there but I am very happy with what i have. not too much waffle and he explains the exercises well so you really understand why youre doing them.. (some of the things may seem a bit mundane if you dont see the context of why it is youre doing them and what it is youre working on - e.g. reading and rereading the same passage numerous times, practicing strange hand movements to guide your eyes along the page etc) but his reasoning is pretty sound and so far they are working. ( i am about half way thru the book, have easily doubled my reading rate and improved retention for a similar text compared to when i began the course.) now this may seem pretty good already and that alone would have been worth the price to me, but when you start this book,it does honestly make you realise how much you can potentially improve so long as youre willing to put in the hours....
