Favorite volume yet!
Volume 4 is my favorite volume yet of the Death Note series! Although the extensive mind games between L and Light in volume 3 were gripping they could have become tedious for those of us who are not wild about the detective/mystery genre. Misa's involvement will make things more interesting! What I'm trying to say is I'm hoping onwards from volume 4 the series will incorporate more elements of the fantasy genre and lean away from the detective/mystery genre somewhat, or to put it another way, stop beating around the bush and get a thick plot rolling! But, that is just my bias.

Also I should note that book also ends on a huge cliff hanger, it is almost mean! I will be getting the next volumes as they come out. An excellent manga series.23

DO NOT BOTHER WITH THIS PIECE OF CRAP
Just bought the Marvel Encyclopedia, after reading the DC Encyclopedia and the OHOTMU and what can I say other than it was a waste of money. There are numorous inaccuracies in his book, like mistaking Captain Britain for Maelstorm and Jean Grey for Emma Frost. Most of the Marvel entries have not been updated despite the fact that some of the most important Marvel story line happend in the last year like the House of M. For example, Emma Frost's occupation is listed as Headmistress of the Massachusetts Academy. She's been with the X-Men for a considerable time now. According to the Encyclopedia, she is teaching Generation X. There is no mention of her relationship with Cyclops or the fact that she has a secondary mutation that allows her to turn to a diamond form. Anyone reading the Encyclopedia to get caught up on the Marvel U is going to be in for a surprise when they pick up the comics.
You'd be better off picking up the OHOTMU or the new updates which are out in comic stores.
24

Fantastic
This big book is absolutely packed with Okami artwork. Beautiful designs in full colour on good quality paper and in English. I was waiting, what seemed like forever, for this to be translated and available here in the UK. And now it is. A great addition to your collection, if you enjoy game artbooks as I do.25

As one Kira leaves another appears on the scene
The fifth volume of the brilliant Death Note manga opens with Light in jail under suspicion of being Kira. In order to get out of this predicament he gives up the Death Note and all memories associated with it and when the murders continue while Light is in prison L decides that Light can be released but must remain under his constant surveillance. As the murders continue it becomes apparent that Kira seems to have changed tact as rather than make the world a better place they seem to be targeted at the world of big business.

Death Note continues to fascinate and entertain and the addition of a more self motivated Kira is a nice if not terribly original addition to the story. Also another good thing about this volume is that rather than reveal the identity of the new Kira right away as they did with Misa the story keeps you guessing as to their identity throughout. If there is a problem with this volume of the story it is that, despite the addition of the new Kira, it has the feel that it is mainly setting things up for the future rather than telling the story itself. In spite of this small matter I can definitely see why so many people are raving about this excellent manga.26

Beautifully Produced Collection
Ok first up two things ...

1 - I enjoy Heroes & am enjoying the 2nd Series but wouldn't class it as an all-out"favourite" show of mine. It's cool, it's well-produced & it's interesting but it's never quite hooked me in like 24 or Lost.

2 - I'm not a big comic-book buff. I devoured comics as a kid & I sometimes pick up compilations of tie-in's that relate to favourite films/tv shows of mine but I'm certainly no expert

With the above in mind I REALLY enjoyed this Heroes Collection. It's a large compendium of short stories featuring major & minor characters from the tv show but although mirrors the time-line of Series 1, the stories are unique & original. This is not a simple re-telling in graphic form of the first series.

The stories are cool and I couldn't fail to be impressed how easily they sit alongside the show. Sometimes tie-in products fall way-short of expectations due to the fact that they simply aren't a patch on the movie or show they feature. This isn't the case with this collection although MAYBE this is partially down to the fact that the show isn't always expertly written ?

The thing that impressed me most about this Graphic Novel is how well it's produced. I picked it up for under £10 & did so as I thought it was great value for money considering the classy cover & brilliantly laid-out contents. The illustrations throughout the book are all full colour and superbly inked which really appealed to me. Far more impressive than many other comic books I've picked up recently.

Overall if you're a fan of the show I'd recommend this item. Not only is it an interesting, lengthy read but it's also something I'll happily keep in my book collection as one of my more impressively produced books.28

An old friend returns
I was disappointed when Resnick disappeared from this authors main characters, but can understand that sometimes a writer has to develop other characters. I found that the Frank Elder books were not as good as I hoped and was therefore glad to see the resurrection of Resnick and to see the old familiar crew there. The book was as good as I hoped for, and did not disappoint.
You can feel the weariness in Resnick as he gets older, and copes with the greatest loss in his life. I wonder if the introduction of Shields and Ramsden, who really take over the second part of the book, and who are developed strongly set the path that author is going to take in the future. I for one think that there is great scope for these two characters in other books and hope that I am right.

Dont miss it - a great read,29

The taskforce closes in on Kira III
Although still a marvellous read the previous volume of Death Note had something of a filler feel to it but thankfully this sixth volume sees this excellent manga series back on top form. Having identified that the new Kira is among seven individuals working for Yotsuba Light, L and the rest of the taskforce must find a way to get the evidence of how Kira kills his victims before the move in on the seven. When Misa is sent to get close to the seven the Shinigami Rem complicates things by revealing itself to her and Misa comes up with a plan of her own.

This volume is probably one of my favourite to date with some great action and some nice plot twists. It is also good seeing the Shinigami again after there brief hiatus in the last volume, and we also learn some more about the Gods of Death themselves. Although not really much of a cliff-hanger, the ending of this volume leaves the story in an interesting place and it will be interesting to see where Death Note goes from here but with the story only at the halfway point I am worried that it could be starched out too much in the later volumes.30

Masterpiece
Only graphic novel to date to win the Pulitzer Price.

That should be compelling enough to endear anyone to this masterwork.

The drawing isn't perhaps as expressive as that of Sacco, but the novelty in Maus not only comes from the controversial bestialization of the characters (Poles are pigs, Jews are mice, Germans are cats, etc) but also from the timeline jumps that mix the chilling tale of Vladek's survival of Auschwitz and the author's process of discovery and acceptance of his father's personality as he is retold the survivor's tale.

So while we are presented with the horror's faced by Vladek, the book also deals with the strained relationship between the author and his father, his father's second wife and the author's converted wife.

One can only praise Spiegelman's honesty at the less than perfect portray of the old age Vladek and his own insecurities.
31

PERFECT!
Reports of the strips being smaller are not an issue for me. If I hadn't read it in previous reviews I wouldn't have noticed. I have also not had any trouble with the binding or anything. Pages are of high quality and the intro from Waterson adds to the enjoyment.
I have coveted this item for over a year and finally decided to go for it. Wish I hadn't waited. Who's side are you on?
When I first heard about this book, I was very excited and after reading the first issue I wanted more. Its one of the best story lines I've ever read. Not only is the story awesome, but the artwork is amazing. Some of the fight scenes were amazing aswell, all your favourite heroes beating the living daylight out of each other.
I was so excited reading this, I really wanted one team to win. It wasn't like reading a normal story with heroes and villans, it was pretty much just heroes.
This was another great job done by the writer Mark Millar.
I recommend this to anyone who loves superheroes, reads comics or is just getting into comics. I'd also recommend this to anyone who loves a good story.33

Classic comic strips showcased well
The 15th book in Titan's continuing line of James Bond graphic novels, The Paradise Plot reprints comic strips from the early 1980s. Originally published in the Daily Star,"The Paradise Plot" and"Deathmask" are reprinted here in their entirety. Unlike some of Titan's comic strip collections, the reproduction in this book is excellent. Presumably Titan had better source material this time, as even the fine lines have printed really well.

The artwork is by John McLusky, back on the strip after 16 years. The stories are originals by Jim Lawrence, who may not be an Ian Fleming but he handles it well.

Another two or three books and Titan will have collected every James Bond newspaper strip since 1958. If you're a Bond fan and/or a fan of newspaper adventure strips all of these books are worth your time.35

Light's plans bear fruit
This seventh volume of the truly excellent Death Note manga is something of a book of two halves. The first half of the volume sees the conclusion of Light's rather complicated plots and it looks like he is well on his way to creating his perfect world. The second half of the volume sets things up for the second half of the series with new opponents arising to challenge Kira and events take a turn that he does not expect.

This series continues to impress me and some of the twists in the plot of the story, although seeming somewhat contrived in places, are nonetheless fascinating and do enough to keep you reading. I will definitely be interested to see where the story goes on from here.36

Best Manga Ever?
I've been devouring manga the past few years, and have not found one that has captivated me as much as Death Note. An intense plot with more twists than a bag of pretzels is coupled with a dark sense of humour and jaw dropping artwork to bring you one of the most thought provoking series of graphic novels I've ever read.

Book 8 takes place 4 years after Light first receives the notebook, and the plot takes an entirely new direction once again. The plot explodes to proper global levels with new rivals Mello and Near giving Light's grey matter a serious workout. One warning though- you'll be counting down the days until the summer for the conclusion..37

A stern warning of things to come...
For those who have read Orwell's 1984, V for Vendetta has nothing new to offer. In this comic book, Moore is re-treading that road, like so many other writers of science-fiction. The dystopian England of the book is a carbon-copy of Nazi Germany, rather than a fictional creation designed to satirise the modern world. It has no relevence to the Britian we live in.
In addition Moore decided to set his comic book in what was then the near future- 1998. This has to be one of the worst mistakes in sci-fi, as it quickly dates the book or film. Orwell got away with it, but by the time the actual 1984 came to pass, the book was already a modern classic.

The other essential element of comic book writing- the artwork- is fairly good. It looks good and the grim backdrop to the story is drawn in a darkly atomspheric style.39

Garth Ennis is a Genius!
Once again Garth Ennis demonstrates his brilliance in this unique and hilarious graphic novel. The story follows the exploits of Hugh Campbell who after witnessing his girlfriends demise is enlisted into"The Boys" a CIA funded team trained to deal with super heroes who step out of line. As with most of Garth Ennis's work it is packed full of violence, gore, nudity and plenty of politically incorrect humour which will have you laughing well into the night. Believe me when I say that after reading this you will never be able to look at super heroes in the same way again.40

Hulk Smash!!
After the let down and stupidity of the"Civil War" event (you're not american unless you have A Myspace and watch Nascar), there was a lot of anticipation for WWH. Part of a trilogy of Hulk sagas, starting with Planet Hulk and ending with Skaar: Son Of The Hulk, WWH, doesn't fail to deliver what it promised, hulk smashing things.

Having returned from Sakaar, Hulk is seeking revenge for its destruction. The action never reall lets up from th start, with Hulk taking on the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Dr Strange and the Sentry.

Reading WWH Hulk is a bit like reading a Hulk Vs thread on the internet, and although a massive fan of the Hulk since Planet, the excuses used for him winning are sometimes a bit shoddy, something some on the internet refer to as"plot armor", he's so angry he can do anything because it moves the plot along.

John Romita Jr, one of the better artists of Marvel's stock, does well. Sometimes during the many fight scenes his art begins to suffer and not make a lot of sense, but it's good enough to convey the emotions of characters without making things so bad you don't want to read.

All in all, it's everything I ever wanted from a Hulk book. It has enough depth to make it more than just a bunch of maniacs kicking each other, but enough smashing to be fair to the violence expected from Hulk.
