Review:
Bringing Eastern & Western Philosophy together
This is an extraordinary book, succeeding in bringing Eastern and Western psychology & philosophy together in a comprehensive, down-to-earth, understandable way. Anodea Judith presents the chakra-system as a personal ladder to spiritual and emotional growth, almost analogue to the stages of development in the model of Erikson. What's unique (or at least, special) is the well-succeeded integration of Eastern and Western models of child and adult development. Hats off to Anodea Judith!

Excellent, detailed book on deep tissue massage
This is a great book - one of the few massage books with real detail on how to actually perform deep tissue massage.

It probably won’t be much use to people not already well versed in massage but to practitioners it’s a gold-mine.

Sara: Bk. 1: Sara Learns the Secret About the Law of Attraction: Bk. 1 (Sara)

Review:
A wonderfully empowering book for children (and the young-at-heart!)
This is, quite simply, a truly wonderful book! Having read and appreciated many books and CDs by Abraham-Hicks aimed at adults, I was looking for a way of sharing some of the insights with my two children, and then came across"Sara". This book presents many of the key teachings around Law of Attraction, and setting yourself up for a wonderful happy life, all beautifully interwoven within a compelling and uplifting story of a troubled young girl and a wise old owl who appears as her mentor.

My eldest daughter, aged 8, devoured this book in 2 sittings, and has since read it over again. It has had such a profound effect that we have since purchased it for the children of friends and family (both girls AND BOYS) with a similar outcome. And I know I will be buying it, and sharing it, again and again! I even sent away to the States for Books 2 and 3 because they haven't yet been published here, and we couldn't wait!!!

I can see these books going the way of the"Harry Potter" books: First the kids read them. Then the adults secretly read them too. And finally the adults openly read them, and discuss them and share them with others!

The sooner our children get the message that they are in charge of their emotions, and can create for themselves the life they truly want, the better. And since this is not exactly central to the National Curriculum, I am thankful to Esther Hicks/Abraham for providing another (very enjoyable) way for this to happen :)

The Multifidus Back Pain Solution

Our Price: £6.99
Used Price: £3.50
New Price: £3.53

Review:
An excellent book on lower back pain
A well written book that takes great care to methodically explain the scientific basis for some lower back problems and their treatments, with many quotes from peer reviewed scientific papers. Jim Johnson also uses his fairly extensive experience of treating back pain to make the book a readable and practical one rather than just a dry tome.

I read the book (all of it as instructed!) before trying the few simple exercises that are recommended. There has been a definite improvement in back strength in the 3-4 months since I bought it and, more importantly, a reduction in lower back pain. I still get some pain from time to time but it is considerably less.

The key is to follow the exercise plan as laid out in the book and do it regularly. Once you have achieved the desired level of back strength you only need to do the exercises once a week for maintenance of the strength you have built up. However, as soon as you stop them you go back to square one.

I would recommend this book for people who suffer from lower back pain - even if it doesn't help the pain it will probably help you understand what the problem is without being stuck in a particular treatment method like many other books.

The Five Tibetans: Yoga Methods of Power

Our Price: £5.99
Used Price: £1.89
New Price: £1.92

Review:
Straight forward, informative, and achievable
Great book, fairly short and concise but with all the information you would need on the practice of the Five Tibetans.
I bought this book a few years back but, like many things, read it and shelved it for another day... Whilst putting up new shelves for my books I came across it and decided to finally give it a go.

The postures/exercises are straight forward enough, and the whole practice lasts 15 minutes or less. After a week of practice I feel somewhat energised. It would probably help if you have a bit of yoga experience but it's not essential. I had only been to about 10 classes previously and most of the poses were not practised there anyway.

Highly recommended. The author writes clearly, and this is definitely a great place to start for the beginnings of a daily practice.

Review:
What journey?
Bays writes a huge amount about the energy required for her journey but the details are dreadfully vague. We are never given information on her medical problem or on the time spent on her 'journey'. Instead, we are told continually that she is admired. I read this looking for meat, but found only wilted salad leaves.
For the reader who wants specifics, this book is wholly unsatisfactory.

Not only deals with infertility issues
Bought this book for my wife as a 'last' throw of the dice. From what I have gathered, it not only deals with infertility issues but also with general health that I find interesting. I used to suffer from hot feet and I found it that it may be due to liver problems in regulating body heat.
I will extend on this review which unlike the other dozens of reviews will be more in the form of a blog.

Taking Control of Multiple Sclerosis: Natural and Medical Therapies to Prevent Its Progression

Used Price: £7.33

Review:
Excellent science based book on MS
Dr Jelinek, a medical professor, who developed MS in mid-life presents a science-based assessment of natural and medical treatments to control MS. His arguments for use of science based natural remedies (mainly nutritional) as well as conventional medical treatments are convincing. Indeed an increasing band of GP's and other medics are now embracing natural as well as conventional treatments for diseases of all types including MS. - See for example the web-sites of Dr Sarah Myhill (UK), Dr Andrew Weil (US) and books by Dr Deborah McManners (UK) and Dr Carole Hungerford (Australia).

Here are a few comments on Dr Jelinek's recommendations based on what has been seen in other books and web-sites:

- ANIMAL INCLUDING DAIRY PROTEIN. Jelinek recommends avoiding dairy protein (including the casein etc in cow's milk) as well as saturated fats from dairy, meat and other sources. He seems to have come to this view independently of T Colin Campbell who in his excellent book `The China Study' expresses similar doubts about animal protein in general (dairy protein in particular) as well as saturated fat from animal sources. T Colin Campbell recommends (and I think Jelinek would agree) that vegetable protein is much preferable to dairy and meat protein.

- NUTRITION. Jelinek's nutritional recommendations for MS sufferers are similar to Campbell's recommendations for the general public who want the best health. Both recommend eating all types of plant foods and avoiding dairy foods and meat but eating fish as the main source of limited animal protein. Campbell adds a recommendation to avoid refined and processed foods and Jelinek adds a recommendation to take good quantities of food containing Omega 3 fatty acids.

- MS SPECIFIC `DIETS' Diets such as `Best Bet' and others can be more restrictive than Jelinek's in that they recommend avoiding gluten, legumes and possibly nightshade foods (potatoes, tomatoes, aubergines , peppers). Avoiding these may be essential if one is specifically allergic to or intolerant of them but Jelinek and Campbell would say that the highest priority is to avoid dairy foods and meat.

- GLUTEN. If one wishes to avoid or limit gluten there are a host of good alternatives such as millet, buckwheat, quinoa, brown rice, basmati rice, oats (low gluten), rye (less gluten than wheat), barley (some gluten) ,spelt (moderate gluten) etc.

- CALCIUM. Conventional wisdom in the West says that one needs cow's milk for it's calcium. However many believe that cow's milk is actually damaging to bones and calcium is best obtained from other sources such as various types of `dark' cabbage greens, broccoli, soy beans / tofu, sesame seeds / tahini and other seeds / nuts, grains, figs, legumes, salad vegetables such as romaine lettuce and celery. and possibly even from spinach. In any case osteoporosis is higher in high milk consuming countries (such as US, ands many European countries) than in low milk consuming countries. It is by no means clear that cow's milk is essential for human nutrition even though the dairy industry would like one to believe this.

- OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS. A good way of taking Omega 3 fatty acids may be to take ground flax seeds. Grinding (preferably at last moment before eating) is needed to release the oils otherwise the seeds pass though undigested. Also flax seeds are more stable than the extracted oils. If taking oils it is recommended to ensure that the diet includes a high level of anti-oxidants preferably from fruits and vegetables.

- OTHER. Other `natural' issues for MS are or may be a) Sunshine / Vitamin D. b) Vitamin B12, c) optimisng diet to optimise digestion (avoiding such conditions as leaky gut so that potential antigens do not get into the bloodstream) and to minimise inflammation.(type 'multiple sclerosis prostaglandins' into google). I do not have space to elaborate here.

In conclusion this is an excellent book on MS. I do not have MS but have unhesitatingly recommended this book to a family member who does.
Animal Reiki: Using Energy to Heal the Animals in Your Life

Our Price: £8.54
Used Price: £5.15
New Price: £3.67

Review:
Good Level 1 book
As a new Reiki therapist, I wanted to learn about using it on animals, so I bought this book. Part One explains the basics of Reiki, (for more details I would recommend The Reiki Sourcebook by Frans and Bronwen Stiene), Part Two is the actual getting ready and giving a treatment, and Part Three explains Reiki for specific animals, with sections for dogs, cats, horses, small animals etc. Part Four is for going on to Level 2 Reiki. The whole book is interspersed with stories of animals which have been treated, and the results obtained.

The book is aimed at people who have taken Reiki Level 1. However it can be enjoyed by all levels, I myself am a Reiki 2. The stories of the animals are lovely and encourage you to go out and do your thing!

The writing is simple and easy to read and there are also pictures for hand positions when giving treatments to specific animals. A good basic guide.

The Aromatherapy Bible: The Definitive Guide to Using Essential Oils

Our Price: £8.44
Used Price: £6.20
New Price: £7.18

Review:
Aromatherapy make easy and fun!
I was looking for a book that gave a rough but imformative guide to aromatherapy and it certainly delivered. It's great for a beginer (like me) but it's also a great reference guide for the more experienced. The infomation is well writen, to the point but also very informative. it includes all the main branches of aromatherapy, to give the reader a well rouned view of the whole subject. This book is also fun to read as it's colouurful! i really didn't want to buy a book full of writing and no pictures, as i knew i was more likely to put it down. but i read this book in two days and have learnt so much. A bad point is that it assumes the reader is a bit dim in the explanations of things (although that's probably because i am a science sudent)

Overall i think it's a great book and well worth buying.
