Makes OS X seem complicated
I have to admit I'm not used to reading this sort of thing, but this author - to me - has gone so far in the 'make it easy to read' plan that it's pretty hard going. I'm fairly convinced that if it had been written properly it would be around a third of the size; there's so much condescending (and misleading) chit-chat to work through that it gets tedious to read page to page, and it's badly enough organised that it's impossible to skim-read to find what you're after. In fact, OS X is rather simpler to get to grips with than the book is - just poke about in the OS until you find what you're looking for.
There is some useful information in there, but it's very well hidden.3

You Won't Be Disappointed
For anyone new to Nikon's D40/D40x DSLR this is the book to buy. The camera manual supplied by Nikon has poor readability, with tiny fonts, grey print not black, and defies logic in the way that's organised. In contrast The Digital Field Guide by David D. Busch, in full colour, is a treasure trove of well organised, readable information. For the newbie or the more advanced amateur moving to DSLR, you won't be disappointed. I'm delighted with mine. After reading a few chapters, my photographs are stunning. Much thanks to David, to Amazon for a terrific book.4

Well worth the money
I bought this for more than what it costs now (which is less than a tenner). That's the cost of two issues of a magazine! I read it cover to cover on one flight, then re-read it cover to cover on my second flight. When I landed at my destination I was taking better pictures than when I left the ground.

If all the advice I haven't used yet is as good as what I have then this is pound for pound one of the best pieces of kit I have bought as a beginner.

(I should add - if you don't have photoshop, download Gimp and do the same things for free!)5

An entertaining book on this new operating system.
As with all new Microsoft operation systems there is confusion on how everything works. After a few weeks of trial and error you begin to learn how to work the controlls but what do you do in the meantime struggle on or consult a very informative book written in a intelligent way.

Andy Rathbone has written excellent easy to understand books for most of the Windows systems, especially XP which i have found invaluable in correcting mistakes or carrying out tasks that unless you are computer literate may take you ages to figure out.

For a start Windows Vista operates in a similar way to XP but looks and works in a totally different manner.

What do all the new control panels do or the different icons stand for.
This book will easily put you right on many of the problems you will eventually come across.

It is a reference book or systems manual that you can learn from as you go along.
This new Vista book is sensibly priced and if you already use or are eventually going to upgrade to the various Vista programmes in the future then this book is one of the easiest to understand and includes everything you will want to know and alot you may never use but it will be there if you need it.7

Fantastic Book
This book is really hitting the mark. if you are serious about your photography and want to improve then this is a must purchase. The subject matter, the explanations and the photography are all excellent. I fail to see how anyone could not gain benefit from this book. And you will always want to take a look when you are about to photograph a new subject.8

Solid introduction to NLP
Clear minded, competent and enjoyable introduction to NLP. The basics are advanced in a simple, well-rounded manner and there are plenty of activities to challenge and refine your thinking and behaviour. Possibly it's greatest achievement is that the later ideas and activities (which are often called 'more advanced' in other books) flow beautifully and logically on in an engaging and stylish manner. As with 'CBT for Dummies' (which acts as an almost complementary companion) it's a book I often recommend to clients in the appropriate circumstances. Well worth purchasing.10

Good practical advice
Scott Kelby says that he will treat you as a mate out on a photo shoot with him and advise you accordingly throughout this book. That is exactly what he does.
This book contains no-nonsense advice on shooting weddings, portraits and also some additions to landscapes and other scenes from the first book.

This is an entirely new volume of wisdom, so if you haven't already got it, consider buying his first book as well.
Yes, the humour is an acquired taste, but its one that I really like, breaking down the barriers and making the photography fun. It must be popular as Scott has achieved great success in all his books.

The one thing that results in a 4 star rating is that despite his assurances, this book is targeted at Nikon and Canon users. Yes Scott, I know that other makes have similar controls, but by ignoring the other makes and providing step by step instructions to the big two you are alienating those of us who have Olympus, Sigma, Sony, Pentax and any other make there is out there.11

Usual Dummies style - easy, well layed out and informative.
Excellent book. Covers all the basics and also goes more in depth. The chapters explore the technical side of digital SLRs in a easy going well paced text. The illustrations and photos serve to enhance the understanding, rather than the author showing how totally amazing they are at taking photos and leaving you wondering. The last few chapters move from the technical side of photography, into the artistic side of composition and editing.

This book would suit someone completely new to photography, through to the person making the move from film to digital.12

A Great Help In My Study's
I have recently started a Dreamweaver CS3 College Course. I purchased CS3 The Missing Manual as an added extra for my course. There are alot of different books to choose from on this particular subject so I scoured the internet and did a bit of research. Dreamweaver cs3 the missing manual and dynamic cs3 seemed about the best on all the reviews. Im so glad that I chose CS3 The Missing Manual. There is plenty of important and handy information in this book, from basic web design to advanced Web design and practically everything in between. I often get stuck on questions on my CS3 College course and revert to The Missing Manual. You can pretty much garantee that the book will resolve the problems along the way. I would say that The Missing Manual is extremely helpful.13

A really excellent little book
This book is packed full with tips on how to improve your website's success at being found by Google.

It's worth reading it before you register your domain and build your site, because there are useful tips regarding domain names, page titles, images, content, and even where your host servers are in the world.

I have read it cover-to-cover and found it to be really useful. I can now proceed to build a website in the best way to ensure that it does well on Google. The author does take the time to mention throughout the book that Google is not the only search engine, and that it is definitely worth putting some effort into succeeding with those alternatives too.

I am entirely confident that this little book will become well-thumbed. It is not written only for those folk building new websites. You need to keep working on your site to ensure continued search success and I'm sure that I'll keep dipping back into this book and following the tips to improve my site's rating.

It is important to note that, at the time of writing, this book is newly published, and therefore that all of the tips are current and valid to the way that Google's algorithms work right now. Also, that all of the wider references are contemporary and relevant. And, of course, it is important to note that the author has 'got the T-shirt', he has built (and sold) a successful web-based business, and worked on/with many others.

The book is well written in a humorous style which makes what might otherwise be a bit of a dry techie subject very understandable and easy to read.14

Buyer Beware.
I recently attended a two-day course on Adobe Photoshop CS3 as part of my conversion to digital photography and digital imaging. At the end of that course the students were all given a copy of this book which contains a training CD Rom. As I was already booked onto the"advanced course" in 14 days time, I eagerly put the CD into my computer to practise what I had learned. Only then did I discover the CD would not work without my having first purchased and installed the full Adobe Photoshop CS3 software.

In my case, I had already ordered that software so it was only a matter of a few days delay before I could get started. Just be warned that you cannot use this product without having first installed the full software package - and that is a separate purchase altogether.

Once that's done, it's actually great. Anyone who starts at page one - with no previous experience and no knowledge of the difference between a tool bar and a menu bar, will find it all fit slowly into place as the book teaches one step at a time and then builds on each step until you find yourself automatically going back to something already learned as though you have been doing it for years.

My only criticism of the book is some pretty silly typing errors. In one example you are referred back to a previous page only to find they got the page number wrong. In another, a list of tools is incorrect.

I did find such basic errors to be quite surprising (and very annoying at the time) from a team of people who are otherwise so technically competent.

NM

17

Practical handholding through the SEO jungle
A cracking introduction to Search Engine Optimisation (or Search Engine Marketing as they would prefer to call it!) Runs through the basics at a very easy pace (slightly slow, but at least it ensures that you've covered all the basics). Lots of practical exercises. For me, as a website designer, it confirmed a lot of suspicions I'd always had, and added some new ideas, but most importantly it gave me a focus for structuring my thinking; so even if you've been around in the web world for a bit it's a definite good buy.20

Found this really useful
This book is really accessible, with loads of working examples. I needed to write a couple of custom functions for use in Excel 2002 spreadseets. And needed to get them working as addins. This book told me all I needed to know. A lot simpler to follow than some other books on this topic - such as one of the author's other books"Excel 2002 Power Programming with VBA".Brilliant.

Great Guide for a Great Game
This is a really comprehensive book, as you'd expect from Bradygames. It has all the information and tips you'd want from a strategy guide, but as another review mentioned, it has changed in format. The guide is split into colour coded sections - which i assume roughly correspond to mission strands - and incorporates in the main story side missions such as Vigilante, Car Theft and Random Characters. Though it does tell you at the end where to find hidden items and jumps I did miss the Vehicle showroom, which is why I'm not giving it the full five stars.
