A must-read book for anyone suffering from depression
This is an extremely helpful book, both for sufferers and their families, and also health professionals.
Janet and Jane have exposed a number of shortcomings of the conventional approaches of the medical and mental health services. They guide the individual towards seeking the best treatment in an easy to understand manner.
They expose the dangers of mis-diagnosis and inappropriate medication prescription and their experiences reveal the depths to which this can subject intelligent, professional people. Their stories do, however, show how it is possible (and necessary!) to obtain the correct advice and how important diet and therapy can be.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Peter N Ralph23

Listening to those who have been helped
After reading some of the criticism which is now surfacing on the net about the validity of Patrick Holford's claims I felt compelled share my own experience with this book.
I bought the first edition some 3 years ago with a view to finding some help with my asthma. I read the first 4 chapters and put the book down as I felt there was enough information to try a few things out. I then followed the recommendations and was able to do without my inhalers after 2 months. After 3 months I was completely free of any asthma symptoms and was able to walk and run without attacks coming on. Now, almost 4 years on I am still free of asthma.
I am 49 and have been asthmatic since 2 years of age. Therefore the advice offered in the first 4 chapters was enough to change my situation in a way which conventional medicine denies even to be possible.
A person should have enough discernment to separate the wheat from the chaff and benefit thereby. I believe the critics should take some time to ask those who have been helped by Holford's approach and not harp on about clinical trails which generally prove little in any case. Nothing compares to personal experience when trying different approaches to health.
25

Great how he emphasises the correct food to eat even with a timetable on what you should eat from breakfast to dinner and even turns into a little cook book with recipes and shopping lists haha. Worth gettin and its great because you will get fit reading it and offers some good advice26

Brilliant, Simple and Yummy!
I love recipe books, food, cooking and entertaining! However, I need to loose weight and was recommended to this programme by my lovely nutritionist. Hence, the purchase of this book, with a heavy heart expecting boring bunny food....

I was immediately impressed on recipet of the book. The cover is attractive, the book is well and logically layed out, its bright and cheery and written very well.

There is a good introduction on the theory of the diet as well as cooking methods, shopping, what to have in your fridge etc.

The recipes are lovely! I have to be careful with wheat and dairy so was concerned that I would be scabbling for usable recipes. Not so! Most recipes have none of the above, or offer alternates.

The recipes themselves are excellent. Very easy to follow for a cook of any level. Each recipe has suggested serving ideas with it as well as allergy advice, portion size and advice on using the recipe during the 'maintainance' phase. Very well thought out.

My only mild disapointment is that there are so very few pictures of the food... It is very obvious what the dish will look like when you read the recipe, but dont we all love pictures! None the less, I've barely read the book through and it already has 'kitchen marks' on it! I can see this becoming a much used, stained and cherished volume.

Add it to your collection now! Not only will you enjoy the fabulous recipes, but you'll be a whole lot healthier for it too!I've lose 5 lb in a week and eaten lots of wonderful, yummy food while doing so.27

Plan that works long-term!
In February 2004 my wife and I started this diet, and after 3 weeks on the restricted phase (part 1), we moved on to the general principles: over the first 9 months we both lost 3 stones+ (not that we were both massively overweight but were at the top of our BMI without being obese). Following the basic principles we have kept the weight off. So it does work, and continues to work without yo-yoing. It is tough, but should losing weight be easy? The book supplies the principles, it does require a degree of willpower. Having kept the weight off, knowing how to manipulate one's diet healthly can only be a good thing. So give it a go - why not! This works and even allows a large glass of red wine every day. To recap: over the last 2 years the weight is still off. So, if you want a diet that works, and once one understands the basic idea, it is not overly harsh - try it; it has worked for everybody whom I know who have tried it. In short if you are weak then don't bother - instead go to the gym and dream. If you are indeed interested in diet, then providing you have any will-power the plan should work. Not for the weak-hearted, but should work for the strong-willed28

Fantastic and informative read from an expert in his field
A superb read for anyone wishing to get motivated and gain knowledge into how the body is crying out for regular exercise and the fundamental effects of not regularly exercising.

In particular there is startling facts about the simple reality of even the smallest regular over intake of calories can over a period of time result in an individual becoming over-weight and progressing to obesity if not addressed.

The book does not provide specific information on exercise ideas, programs or workouts (for more information and ideas try a book by his colleague on many expeditions, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, 'Fit for Life': http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ranulph-Fiennes-Fit-Life-Sir/dp/0316852635/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1199967094&sr=8-3)

Combine this book with 'Fit for Life' and you will have a superb basis for re-evaluating the need for regular exercise (the results of not doing so) and how to complete a regular exercise program and be 'Fit for Life'.31

A Tasty Number!
A test of good recipes is when non-diabetics enjoy them too. I've been feeding my family on recipes from this book and the other AWT Diabetic Weight Loss Cookbook and they haven't noticed - but their waistlines have. It's difficult to even get a cherry muffin when everyone enjoys them! Really clear information and has helped me to adapt other favourite recipes to make them more diabetic friendly. Would recommend this or the other AWT cookbook to anyone.32

After reading this book and making my list of foods, seven months have passed, and I can honestly say the information has helped me loose a good deal of excess weight, and kept it steadily low too.
However weight loss was not my goal! I also suffered from chronic heartburn and since the day I started the diet in this book I have had it twice :) on occassions when I strayed from the plan!
I now use this diet as a footprint for testing foods out on myself, it’s easier to narrow down what diagrees with me.
well worth the read :)

I suffered almost 5 years of very uncomfortable stomach problems, fatigue/tiredness, weight loss/gain as well as many disappointing doctors and hospital visits. During this time I changed my diet many times and after my last operation things seemd to clear up. However I felt I still wasn’t eating right! After reading this book and making my list of foods, seven months have passed, and I can honestly say the information has helped me loose a good deal of excess weight, and kept it steadily low too.

Keeping Bees and Making Honey

Excellent book for someone considering beekeeping
I bought this book knowing virtually nothing about bees (they exist, they live in hives and they make honey was about the sum total of my knowledge).
I have been considering keeping bees for a while and thought that a little reading would help guide me to a decision.

From memory, the book covers: types of bees (not just honey bees), types of hives, the gear required by the beekeeper, where bee hives can be situated, how bees can be purchased, the maintenance of the colony & hive, pests and how to mitigate their impact, the social structure of the bee colony, the way honey is produced by the bees, the 'swarming' of bees, how to harvest honey from the hive and how to store the harvested honey. There's definitely more - my memory just isn't good enough.

The book material is pitched at the level of the layman/novice. In particular areas the book is usefully pratical and in-depth e.g. There are guides to setting up the hive and putting in the colony, checking the colony's health after setting up your apiary, harvesting the honey, controlling swarming and spring-cleaning the hive. There are also little practical tips throughout that will obviously help you avoid common mistakes e.g. Approach your hive from the side, approaching the front entrance will only wind-up your bees!

To sum up. I thought the book was excellent and was written at exactly the right level for someone in my position. It increased my knowledge greatly (admittedly i started with none), it informed me that i have a more-than-reasonable environment for a hive, it convinced me that i'd be capable of performing the duties required to keep the bees happy and healthy, it told me how to go about performing the duties required, it told me what equipment i'd need to keep bees and finally it was a thoroughly pleasant read into the bargain.
34

Highly effective....
This diet and lifestyle plan is really effective, I lost 7lbs in the first week on this diet, and my husband has lost a stone in 3 weeks. Its very easy and once the first 2 weeks are over, we both slipped into an easy routine of healthy eating. We did Rosemary's Shape up & Salsacise DVD every other day, and this really speeded things up, so that is a top tip. Some of the recipes are nice some a bit bland, but they can be easily adapted, the whole family happily eats low gi healthy meals every night.37

Sack the editor
Although the book is good from the point of eating healthily, there are soooo many mistakes. You are given shopping lists for that weeks meals which misses items and over estimates! Descriptions are incorrect, eg one dinner of chunky veg soup (in the title) was actually instructed to use the tomato and rosemary from the previous day. You also make a stew which you have 2 tablespoons of, but you make enough to feed a family of four. If you buy this book, ignore the shopping list and go through the recipes and construct you own list with the correct amounts.

NOTE: it is stated on the back of the book that it is an amalgamation of the previous titles from the author.38

The most innovative approach to dieting I have ever read.
Great book! What I liked so much with Marilyn Glenville's approach to Fat around the Middle, was that it was not ALL blamed on our diet, but also on the stressful life we lead. The logic of controlling our stress hormones to keep our blood sugar in balance and so stop the body storing fat around the middle was a new logic to me and very motivating. That, together with positive exercise has helped me trim up and feel that I am again in control of my body and that my extra kilo or two, was not just an 'inevitable' menopausal symptom! This is the third book I have bought by Marilyn and I have learned a lot from them all.39

Until you read this book you aren't even scratching the surface.
William Wolcott explains how traditional and alternative medicines use a 'one-size fits all' approach that never treat the cause, only the symptoms. This is why so many people become the silent majority that the above practices fail to heal.
This book will open your eyes, change your views of the products we eat and help you become a successful professional in your field if you follow its principles.
