Real Information about Information Technology
Authors Peter Weill and Jeanne W. Ross provide a thoughtful overview of an important topic - how companies govern information technology and how they can maximize their IT investments. Although computer professionals don ’ t walk around in white lab coats the way they did in the early 1970s, many corporate cultures tend to isolate IT professionals. Although studies show that companies which govern their IT processes effectively earn higher profits, IT professionals often seem cloistered in their own high-tech priesthood. This book provides a blueprint for harnessing IT and making it the efficient value-generating machine it was always intended to be. You don ’ t have to wear a pocket-liner, carry a PDA or even know what"http" stands for to benefit from reading this book, which makes a strong case for the importance of solid, goal-aligned IT management. If you sense that your company suffers from a disconnect between its strategy and its IT capabilities, we believe this book could become your firm ’ s most important piece of low-tech information technology.47

Does what it says on the tin
I bought this book after finding an article about it on a site called interwoveness.com.This review was written by someone who understands website promotion, so I don't agree with the comments below from N.J .Pendell. Sure, if you are an expert there may be nothing to add to your repertoire but for everyone else, including those who know quite a bit or next to nothing, this is a very useful book and so easy and pleasurable to read.
I also don't agree that"it is more 2004 than 2007" and is"a little out of date". I have checked through every reference site in the book and they're all still going. The books says Google is king and at this moment in late 2007 that fact is still very true.
Another good sign is that i checked up on all the testimonials at the front of the book, and those guys really are on the 1st page of Google searches. Ok, many of them have websites in businesses which are not fiercely competitive and so easier to optimise...but that's not the book's fault. But maybe the writer, who is a guitarist, should have pointed out that it will take a lot longer than a month for the search engines to push up your site, if you are in a highly popular field. For this reason only, I have given the book 4 and not 5 stars. I highly recommend it to anyone who has a good website which few people get to see.48

I really enjoyed reading it
Joel's book is an excellent read, I thoroughly enjoyed it cover to cover and I came away with some great information for when I move on in my career.

Even though developers looking for a company to work for might not the main type of reader for this book, I think what Joel has to say does help in fully appreciating the point of view of hiring companies. The book provides insight in what to look for in a great workplace and what questions to ask during the interview.

I really enjoyed reading it, and would recommend you buy it.49

Having the courage to be different
If you type Branding into Google, you will find 1,330,000 references. Everyone knows about it, talks about it, but few have created a successful brand and can explain to others how they did it. Marty Neumeier has and can. He explains how to do it in simple stages avoiding jargon and confusion. This is not a 'padded' book, I read it in two sittings.

He writes beautifully with a full knowledge and appreciation of the next question on the reader's lips.
I particularly liked how he used the running example of a fledgling company throughout the book, bringing to life its stage by stage growth and illustrating how ground-breaking differentiation was achieved.

This is an essential book for designers and clients who need to demystify the branding process, and it will help them generate the vision and courage needed to create a unique brand.50

Excellent coverage of an undercovered topic
Having used MOSS 2007 and WF since their beta timescales I've always struggled to find a source of useful information on this topic . . . enter"Workflow in the 2007 Microsoft Office System".

The book starts off basic, covering the concepts behind WF and workflows using SharePoint Designer. Then it gets down and dirty into the essentials like activity development, sequential workflows, state machine workflows, workflow forms and lots of other good stuff that you'll need to know should you want to write custom workflows for MOSS.

Excellently covered and very informative and easy to follow - a must for a SharePoint developers bookshelf.53

A good look back at Commodore
Generally speaking, this is a fascinating insight into the trials and tribulations of Commodore. Amazing how the company survived at all, given the various people that ended up in control of it, and not a great surprise when it went into bankruptcy.

A couple of niggly points that jar a bit are that it's almost totally US-centric (with only a few mentions of CBM UK, for instance), but moreso that there are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text. This gets a bit annoying if you're pedantic like me!! :-)55

Every Online Bookseller Should Read this Book!!!
I've been selling books on the Amazon Marketplace as a hobby for about 7 months now. After reading"The Home-Based Bookstore," I could definitely make more money by employing Steve Weber's advice.

His advice includes:
-where to find books
-how to price them
-how to handle inventory
-how to handle shipping
-how to deal with problem customers
-and how to deal with legal details (taxes, etc.)

I made about $400 in two weeks after selling the most sought-after books. The most sought-after books are usually college textbooks.

In one part of the book, he says how college students are sometimes careless when purchasing a book. They occasionally buy the older edition, thinking it's the edition they need. When they receive it, they get angry. But it's usually their fault for not searching with the ISBN or paying attention to the details. There are, however, some sellers who list the wrong edition on Amazon's Marketplace. It may not be intentional, but listing the wrong edition is a violation of the Amazon Marketplace guidelines. I once purchased a textbook from a third-party seller who sent me the older edition. I didn't do anything about it. I was still able to use it.

After a few weeks of selling, I started getting some feedback. The first five were all positive, but I got one neutral feedback. The neutral feedback I got was fair. I sent her the wrong book. It was my fault. I entered the title instead of the ISBN when I searched for it. ALWAYS use the ISBN. To prevent negative feedback from this buyer, I issued a refund immediately and allowed her to keep the book I had sent her. I lost money when I did this, but I couldn't afford negative feedback at the time.

I may never become a full-time bookseller online, but I will continue to do this as a hobby. I also think that college students should get a copy of this book. It will help them tremendously when purchasing their textbooks...and reselling them when they're done with them.

Brandon Simpson
