Excellent book on IT Governance - must read.
This is an excellent book on IT Governance both as a primer and also as source of reference. IT Governance is very topical at present as organisations look to IT to deliver tangible value to directly improve the bottom line and implementing effective Governance is essential for Business-IT alignment. Peter and Jeanne provide an excellent yet simple framework for designing and implementing IT Governance in any large organisation. Latter chapters on governance mechanisms, best practices (ch 5) and linking strategy, IT governance and performance (ch 6) are particularly insightful.85

A fine book for anyone who is seriously interested in using Amazon to outsource application infrastructure. Highly recommended.
Amazon Web Services are a constantly expanding series of infrastructure services targeted to web developers who want to outsource parts of their application infrastructure. These services are meant to be reliable, scalable and cost-effective. Especially as far as reliability is concerned, however, Amazon Web Services - together with Google App Engine - have recently been regarded as a bit controversial, due to some downtime episodes. Nonetheless, services such as these provide a gate to the future of the Internet, where owners of small and medium web sites, who can't afford to build some high-quality services on their own, can easily outsource them.<br /><br />Programming Amazon Web Services is the ideal primer to Amazon outsourcing services. It provides a general view of everything Amazon currently offers, including some services in the beta testing phase, as well as the necessary amount of in-depth coverage of each service.<br /><br />A programmer who never outsourced any part of its infrastructure might not be much confident using APIs which abstract tasks such as database access and data storage (even though it would be a good practice to use some sort of API also for locally-provided services). To help in this situations, this book kicks off with an explanation on how to think an application, with an appreciated overview of REST-based APIs, remote requests and XML documents and their handling; at the same time, the author tells you how Amazon thinks you should build your application to effectively take advantage of what they provide.<br /><br />After this introductory part, the whole book is dedicated to the exploration of each service: Simple Stoage Service (S3), Elastic Compute Cloud, Simple Queue Service, Flexible Payments Service and SimpleDB. Every section provides an explanation on what the service is and how it works, including not only its advantages but also the possible problems which may arise by using it. There's also some API references and, best of all, a lot of interesting code examples. Amazon Web Services can be used in any programming language so, even though the examples in this book are written in Ruby, it's easy to understand them and"port" them to your favourite language. Moreover, there are libraries around which allow a more abstracted usage of ABS: for instance, CPAN hosts several Amazon-related modules for the Perl language.<br /><br />All in all, Programming Amazon Web Services this is a fine book for anyone who is seriously interested in using Amazon to outsource application infrastructure. Highly recommended.<br />87

Slap on the wrist
I titled this as 'Slap on the wrist' NOT for the book, but for MYSELF!<br />After buying this book in early 2006, it was left out of sight amongst my many programming books little read.<br /><br />Having recently started a new job, I needed to convert from VB.NET to C# and pulled this book off my shelf for another look.<br /><br />What a pleasant surprise to see everything you need to construct a well driven website, laid out very simply, with good examples in both VB and C#.<br />I SHOULD HAVE READ THIS BOOK SOONER!<br /><br />An ideal start for anyone new to intermediate level in ASP.NET with good explanations and no geeky stuff.<br /><br />It includes configuration of IIS, SQL Server Instances and the Web server,<br />View and Session states, Control events, Validation controls, Database design, SQL, ADO.NET, Data lists, Datagrids and Details view.<br /><br />Also included is advanced data access, Security, User authentication and Roles, Working with Files and Email.<br /><br />Well worth the money!!88

A wonderful book written by a wonderful person, who sadly is with us no longer
Patrick Tisseghem passed away suddenly in Sweden on Wednesday,3rd September 2008. A great shock and lost to the SharePoint community. He was a wonderful teacher, writer and technician. This and his other book Inside the Index and Search Engines: Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Server 2007: Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server (PRO-Developer) are a testiment to his skill and his love of finding the best way to use technology.89

A developer's guide to MOSS
This is one of the finest development books I have read, the writing style is easy going and fluid. The example code provided is straight forward and easy to follow as well as being practical and simple to adapt. The text takes you step by step through what you need to know in order to extend Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 to meet your real world needs. It does this by introducing the core topic in a structured and well defined manner.<br /><br />For a fairly short book (432 pages) this covers a huge spectrum of tasks, this is partially helped by not covering the more general elements of MOSS covered in the companion book (Microsoft SharePoint 2007 Unleashed).<br /><br />If you need to develop an application which integrates with MOSS then you need this book.<br />91

Valuable part of the wartime jigsaw
This book contains numerous articles written by some of those invisible people who actually took part in this top secret project. Some of the accounts are those of frustration, from people not allowed to get the recognition that they and their colleagues deserve. The level of detail and understanding shown makes this a very interesting and unique picture. I would recommend it without hesitation. Their ability to inject humour in the most serious of stories gives you some idea of the luck and good fortune that resulted in the most important achievements.
