Hill hits the spot

Denver detective Jake McCoy was rehabbing at her cabin in the mountains, trying to reconcile the shooting death of a young boy. Psychologist Nicole Westbrook, an expert in domestic violence, is in those very same mountains, escaping from the horrors of her profession for a brief vacation. Nicole becomes lost when she leaves the well-marked hiking trail in search of hot springs, and she stumbles upon Jake, who is enjoying her own soak in remote springs. They exchange first names only, but after a few hours together, a physical attraction neither can explain, engulfs them, leaving them as lovers, not strangers, when Nicole departs the following day. But when Jake returns to Denver, a murder investigation leads her to Nicole. Both are surprised that they are face to face with the stranger they thought they'd never see again, Nicole tries to remain in the professional closet that she's been hiding in for so long, a place where out cop Jake McCoy does not fit. And Jake, still trying to recover from the shooting that left her injured, does her best to distance herself from Nicole. It is soon evident that a serial killer is targeting Nicole's former patients. Classic Gerri Hill escapism

This was up to Gerri Hill's usual standard (if you discount the dismal"Cottage"). Well-researched, atmospheric, gripping and well-paced. Maybe just a bit of a cliche with the tough but charming cop and the deep and thoughtful therapist but who cares. It's a good yarn with a romance that blossoms at the right speed, sex at the right moment, snappy dialogue and satisfying conclusion.

One of the few good ones.

I couldn't wait to get home from work to read it. It made me smile and I can't wait to see more books from this author.

In a different voice - Carol Gilligan

This book is truly amazing. For any woman who feels she has lost clarity and fierceness and the ability to tell the truth about how she feels and what is going on in the world of feelings and relationships, the social world which she inhabits, read Gilligan's work (any of it). The book made me remember what it was to learn to be nice and quiet and feminine in order to become a 'woman' when as a girl it had been much more OK to be more forthright, and more myself. Interesting both in terms of looking at the psychology of the world of teenage girls and their lived experience, in terms of engaging with social and psychological research through an engaged methodology of relationship which disturbs the usual authoritarian role of researchers, and in terms of the real and lived effects of gender roles and norms on young girls as they 'become' women, not in theory but in practice. It'll make you long for the freedom of life before you were conforming to the ways of being which are acceptable for 'a woman' and remember the amazing gifts which girls and women have to offer, which end up being hidden away and covered over in order to 'fit in' and which become harder and harder to get in touch with the more they are disavowed and disallowed. Every woman should read it, every girl should read it, every parent should read it, every teacher. Men who find women's lack of assertiveness irritating should read it to find out how women end up that way too... Highly recommended.

This book gives a brilliant perspective

This book provides a clear and informative introduction to the idea of gender, space and landscape. The intorduction gives brilliant contemporary examples of poular media and how it affect people's lives. The theories and issues explored and introduced in this book provide a fantastic basis for further reading and understanding.

funny therapy!

This book is awesome. It's funny, it's raw and it's thought provoking. I admire Adnrea's ability to speak her mind and her courage to be herself. The book is written in a diary format which makes is easy to read but impossible to put down! Gay, straight, mommy, no mommy, I'd be surprised if you didn't find something in this book that touched you and inspired you. Enjoy x

A tender, erotic and heartwarming love story

Scott and Ryan are high school guys in Califronia. Both are gay but Scott admits it to himself, and to one or two others, and is happy in his sexuality. Ryan has had more experience but so traumatic that he cannot come to terms with the fact that he is gay. The story is about how the two meet,are immediately struck by a mutual physical attraction and soon start a passionate affair. But the book is also about friendship, family, acceptance and the sheer wonder of love between two very attractive human beings. No one with any human feeling could be homophobic after reading this book. And the rest of us can enjoy its open and joyous portrayal of passion, beauty and love.

An informative and revealing read

An accessible book that lays out the historical assumptions about sex and gender and subjects them to insightful critique."Sexing the Body" reveals the important role science has played in reinforcing social consensus on the nature of sexuality and effectively erasing sexually ambiguous bodies from society.

Fausto-Sterling's arguments are so decisive that it is impossible to close the book without a serious re-examination of one's own attitudes to sex and gender, and a sense of shock at the physical, sexual and psychological obstacles intersexuals - those with physical elements of both male and female - face in a world which acknowledges only two sexes.

Informative, challenging and much recommended.

This book mixes the facts with selected quotations from the research which make it informative and pleasurable to read. This is a style that all too often, fails to reach the right balance. Not the case on this occasion
