Spirit Sisters: True Stories of the Paranormal

Our Price: £4.49
Used Price: £2.02
New Price: £1.99

Review:
Ok but not gripping
Having read lots of this type of book as I find the subject endlessly fascinating I found this book less than a riveting read and had to force myself to continue to the end. This could have been because the writer, not a medium or psychic herself, was merely quoting other people's experiences and had little to add herself. Also perhaps because the experiences quoted were provided by fellow Australians which I found less easy to identify with as I'm based in the UK.

Derek Acorah: Extreme Psychic

Our Price: £4.97
Used Price: £0.01
New Price: £1.95

Review:
Review by a sceptic
I picked up 'Extreme Psychic' for a bit of light relief and some possible explanations about the supernatural, as I am an open-minded sceptic.<br /><br />In the first chapter, Acorah recounts how he met a young man in a 'mental care institution'. The young man was hearing voices and Acorah states:<br />'The young man was neither mentally deranged nor schizophrenic. Quite simply David had the gift of spiritual communication.'<br />As someone who works in the field of mental health, I found this kind of blasé approach to the diagnoses of people with mental health issues to be trite and irresponsible. Plus...I don't think anyone has been described as being 'mentally deranged' for at least thirty years.<br /><br />Putting this aside I continued, in the hope that I would receive some explanation for ghosts, spirits and the like. There was nothing.<br /><br />There was, however, a really funny chapter involving the spirit of an evil monk (although he wasn't really a monk, he was just pretending!!) having to be 'bundled back to the astral plane.' I nearly fell off my chair laughing when Acorah exclaimed; 'I had found the vortex!' Another high point for me was when he waltzed round the kitchen with possessed women!<br /><br />If you're looking for something amusing but a little more balanced and intelligent, then I would recommend 'Will Storr vs. The Supernatural' by Will Storr.<br /><br />This is trite, offers no real explanations. Reads passably well as a ghost story, which is why I gave it two stars.<br />

The Ghost Writer Automatic Writing Kit: Automatic Writing Kit - Messages from Beyond and Magic from Within

Our Price: £6.99
Used Price: £9.56
New Price: £5.71

Like this item
Bought this and thought at first it wouldn't work but after using it for about 5 minutes it started to move around the writing pad. I am not sure if I contact spirits in the afterlife or it was our unconscious minds but it certainly worked. The only drawback is the pen that was supplied leaked and at times fell out of the planchette but the book is good and informative.

Ghosts of Devon

Our Price: £4.99
Used Price: £0.01
New Price: £4.00

Review:
Ghosts of Devon
This was the first ghost book I ever read, and twenty-odd years on, it remains the best. Peter Underwood is Britain's leading ghosthunter and president of Britain's Paranormal Society, which adds to his qualification on the subject. From the story of Dartmoor's 'Hairy Hands' near Princetown, to the haunted Inn at Chagford, this is the definitive ghost book. Buy it with confidence.

Ghostbusters U.K.

Used Price: £7.17

Review:
Informative, interesting without being pompous or pedantic.
I enjoyed this book. I think it will appeal to a wide range of the public, in as much as, although it is easy reading for anyone interested in the paranormal and may even help the reader relate some of their own experiences with those of the cases recorded. - It also seems aimed at those who are making a more serious study of the subject of parapsychology, which is, to anyone who knows, a controversial science. One which grabs the imagination and yet by its very implication is thought provoking. Leading one into asking questions about the way in which the mind works, the human race and its parallel worlds, and by its very examples into an awareness of time, that may exist outside our own understanding. This book actually tries to answer some of those questions. This is not for the closed mind of the rent-a-sceptics, who by their very nature find it difficult if not impossible to accept the idea that life beyond their own personal view of the human race exists at all. This of course narrows the field of their perception to the extent that their view of anyone who has an experience which is of a paranormal nature, and therefore not easily explained in terms that they can accept, is either crazy, confused or even lying. Proof perfect of the paranormal is by its very definition difficult to present simplistically enough for the unfortunate sceptic to understand. If it is, then their belief systems are likely to go into overload and no matter what proof is presented to them, in whatever form, they will retreat behind their complete non-acceptance thus denying the existence of the very world in which they live. Maybe folk with such tunnel vision should take a leaf from the book of C.G.Jung himself when he said"I shall not commit the fashionable error of regarding everything I cannot explain as fraud". Fortunately most of us are not stuck in such a time warp. We are neither gullible, as is often presumed by some so-called experts, nor are we truly sceptical, but a reasonable amalgam of critical curiosity. Prepared to listen to, and inwardly digest both new ideas and ancient mysteries, and more than capable of making our own rational judgements on the evidence presented, based on experience in the University of Life. Which is after all the one seat of learning we all ascribe to. Ghostbusters UK is informative and interesting without being either pompous or pedantic. The author is attempting to make his own contribution, with true stories and personal hypothesis, towards unravelling some of the 'mystery' of the debatable science of the paranormal. This he does by bringing to the attention of the general public, in an acceptable and down to earth manner, his every day investigations into genuine problems. Which it appears are presented to him, by people from all walks of life, who sometimes seem very frightened by their experiences, and simply do not know 'who to call'. There are one or two occasions when I personally am glad not to have been in his shoes. There were times when he seemed either stoically brave or fearlessly foolhardy. Then again he also appears to know just what he is doing and how to handle extremely difficult situations without flinching. This book appears to be just the tip of the iceberg so to speak, an iceberg that seems to grow larger with every day that passes, and one that will not go away!! At least the Author shows genuine concern and unlike other books of this kind is not afraid to stand up and be counted! He does stick his neck out, so to speak, by the very nature of his comments. Parapsychology is a very emotive subject and can cause otherwise rational individuals to go purple in the face at the simple mention of the 'word'. Maybe I should end with the remark by Dr. Samuel Johnson an eminent judge of the literary world, who was also fascinated by magic. He had something to say about the proof that scientists always demand,"as to ghosts" he declared, " all proof's against it.....and all belief's for it".

Haunted Liverpool

Used Price: £2.00

Review:
Possibly the best ghost books in existence
All of this series is gripping and instructive. They really make you think about the nature of reality, the nature of humans and the ways of the world. Not only are the ghost stories sometimes VERY scary, the books really open your mind to other perspectives, and treat people in them with respect and compassion. I am from Widnes, so know Liverpool fairly well, but I think anyone anywhere can enjoy this series. I only hope Tom Slemen continues writing them.

The Highgate Vampire: The Infernal World of the Undead Unearthed at London's Highgate Cemetery and Environs

New Price: £19.99

Review:
Sometimes unbelievable, but overall...good
Although wholly unbelievable in places (indeed, one often finds it extremely difficult to believe the author has experienced what he alleges he has), the book has a very good overview of most vampire lore and discusses some very pertinent points that trouble modern day occultists e.g., are vampires astral entities or corpses?
