The Dukan Diet

Our Price: £6.49
Used Price: £5.50
New Price: £5.90

Review:
Interesting
OMG!!! This diet actually works but is hard work initially. You need to be motivated prior to starting but the results are pretty impressive. I am only half way through this diet but it really is woprking providing you stick with it.

A couple of pieces of dodgy advise are provided though i.e. weigh yourself daily or even hourly which I totally disagree with but hey I' not the expert. I take from it what is important which is the foods etc and ignore adivse which I find a little spurious

Enjoy the weight loss people ;-)

It worked for me! And I'm amazed...
I purchased a DVD"The Secret". I watch it once a week and every time I watch it I take more of it. I understand more so when I was ready I tried. 3-4 months ago I wished my husband worked abroad and did everything it tells to do. This morning I had a phone call from my husband saying he's going to work abroad! So I decided to order"The secret daily teachings and"The Gratitude book". I'm no longer wasting my power and energy for something I don't want.

The Game

Our Price: £3.99
Used Price: £2.40
New Price: £2.71

Review:
The Girlfriend Experience says Neil Straus's the Game rocks!!!
My brother bought this book for me for my 30th birthday. It was a curious choice... and I wondered why he'd picked it. In retrospect I think he wanted to read it after me lol.

I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy a book that was clearly aimed at men learning tactics to 'pull' women. There's even a science as to which angle one should approach a woman, with witty drawings in the book to show these angles and other various tips.

I couldn't put this book down. I found Neil Strauss's writing captivating. His easy reading and witty style made this book a thoroughly enjoyable read. It's one of the rare books that has made me laugh out loud in public (which I always try not to do even if I find something amusing, because you do get strange looks :)

It's sort of autobiographical - how Neil a geeky journalist with no luck with women, who through researching for his writing ended up thrust into the (at the time) underground world of Pick Up Artists, and how he worked himself up the ranks and quickly became the top pick up artist in America, who was respected and admired, and like a god to those in the PUA world.

Ok some of it must have been enhanced for amusement, but his tale is fascinating. With him ending up on his own journey of personal self discovery, as he in the end realises how empty and false the PUA world really is. It's all about an act, and it becomes a competition to those in this surreal world. It's all about numbers how many women they can pull, and various pulling techniques.

I've since been in bars and noticed the PUA techniques with men chatting me up, and it's most amusing. I've been negged (subtle put downs), left out from conversations and various other things, but having read this book I know exactly what's coming so ladies it's a good book to read!

By the end of the book, I couldn't help but feel sorry for these sad individuals who choose to make a life out of notching up women on their bedpost, but never actually settling down into any sort of fulfilling real relationship. It reminds me in some ways about my past escorting life as the girlfriend experience - where men are so completely absorbed in a fantasy life that they completely lose touch with reality.

59 Seconds: Think a little, change a lot

Our Price: £3.57
Used Price: £2.14
New Price: £2.25

Review:
59 seconds wasted
I agree with some of the other reviewers that mention the fact that he is very quick to slag off self help books, but then proceeds to do exactly the same. I think the main problem here, is that he is quite a dry scientific mind. Self help books should always be taken with a pinch of salt, but they have some value in making you think about yourself and your conduct, namely the Paul Mckenna titles, there is essentially nothing outrageous in them, they just have bold statements on the cover to attract the potential reader ( as does this book).Personally my interest stems from the idea of learning things faster and retaining the information, and improving sports training and McKennas"Change you life in seven days", had things in it which I found interesting. Anyone with any common sense takes what they feel is applicable from these books and works certain techniques into their own lives. This book just basically strips everything down into boring lists. You're better off buying a Mind Hacks book and going for a run.If you want to perfect your life you need two things! The ability to let go of certain parts of your life and also a bit more discipline in others.Simple!

A great book to dip into
The actual quality of this edition is mediocre but for the money - what can you expect. It's what's inside that counts. I'm usually a cynic of self help books , but if you leave out the introduction and go straight to the first chapter, there are some great strategies for just being. Nice.

Fat loss for men & women!
This book is v. clearly written and the concept well explained. It's the first"diet" book that my husband has ever bought into. The recipes are simple and tasty. This diet works for men and women but has"male appeal" when talking about the Caveman approach! if you follow this programme you won't feel hungry and the weight will fall away...as it has for me and my husband in the last 2 weeks.

Born to Run: The Hidden Tribe, the Ultra-Runners, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen

Our Price: £4.49
Used Price: £3.00
New Price: £3.69

Review:
Very Interesting but not a runners bible
I have read 70% of the book and will finish it as it is very interesting, especially if you are a runner. I may have purchased the book in a hurry (I buy so many off here)thinking that it was more a runners bible than a record of ultra running achievements.

There are some extremely interesting facts and quotes about running barefoot which was worth buying the book for alone.

The facts are all there but I don't think the author lays them out very well. He assumes the reader is knowledgeable of Spanish as there are many short quotes not translated. I never saw the need for him to quote directly, the translation would have been much better.

The book tends not to flow in places with characters changing names and so long as you accept that some chapters can possibly have little bearing on the whole book, you will be fine.

It takes about 5-8 chapters to get going, there is a lot of mundane stuff at the beginning that does not need to be there.

What Every Body Is Saying: An Ex-FBI Agent's Guide to Speed-reading People

Our Price: £6.26
Used Price: £4.99
New Price: £5.75

Review:
An Excellent and Realistic Book on Body Language
They say that a large proportion of our communication is done via body language (It was around 70-80% I believe)... so it's pretty obvious that with those wanting to achieve mastery over social interactions - that body language is a high priority on their list.

Sadly, a lot of materials have taken advantage of this demand and leapt onto the bandwagon - providing over the top, exagerrated and unrealistic claims... so every self-proclaimed"Body Language Expert" will give you hard-and-fast rules about each and every hand movement, and exactly what they say. So if a man crosses his arms, it means that he is uncomfortable because the decor if his immediate location contains colours that remind him of his 3rd aunt's house who had a big dog that bit him when he was 10... oh, and if he blinks quickly too, it means that there were 2 dogs. Rarely does the consideration"is he cold?" spring to mind.

Fortunately, Joe Navarro is realistic in his explanations. As an Ex-FBI, it could have been tempting for him to make out like he was the lie-detector king and sell you a ton of 'tells' about what people do when they lie... but he doesn't. He holds the realistic idea that you can never tell a liar - Only if they develop discomfort. His ideas are tried, tested and very thorough. There's a lot to learn in this book, particularly for beginners. The layout is nicely structured for dipping back into for reference and is packed with a ton of well-presented images (No ridiculous hand-drawn pictures). But don't think of this as an oracle, or an encyclopedia - but more a study aid / instruction manual.

Unfortunately, because it is one of the few realistic books out there - it dwarfs in comparison to other titles, as it lacks the over-the-top claims that adorn their pages. A lot of the examples are probably 'obvious', for the simple reason they're the only ones that are most reliable. A lot of readers come here expecting a manual for every little flinch and motion - which, I'm afraid, is impossible (or unreliable)... the level of explanation on body language can only go so far, because there's so many factors that come into play. For example; is a woman facing you a sign of interest? On one hand, yes... but what if she's interested yet shy about it? She'd face away then. She might not be interested, but feels comfortable enough that she will still face you...

The only 'reliable' tell you can generally find is a person's state of comfort - which, fortunately, Joe explains in brilliant detail here.

The only real downside is that, coming from an FBI background, a lot of his examples are FBI/crime/interrogation-based. Don't get me wrong - his ideas still apply to social/business situaitons... but be aware that you might need to do a small bit of legwork in applying the principles to your field. He's given you the raw materials - all you need to do is ask"ok - so how could this body language pop up in my field?" - The 'tells' will still be the same, but when and how they appear might change.

So overall, it's an excellent, down-to-earth book that you can keep leaping back into for references and reminders as you hone your new skills

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Our Price: £6.67
Used Price: £2.03
New Price: £5.50

Review:
Some good ideas
There are some good ideas in this book if you've not picked up other self-development/self-help books before. However, many of the ideas have since been copied and updated by other authors. In many cases, those other authors and gurus present the ideas in better ways, so Covey's book hasn't aged that well.

I did feel frustrated that he pads the book out with so many examples and so much distracting wordage. Hey, if the publisher is reading this comment, please consider editing the book a little so it's shorter by about 50 pages or so and reads a lot more tightly. Covey also has an annoying habit of introducing religion into the mix, so the book comes across as a little preachy.

So do read this if you've not picked up any self-help/time management books before. But don't bother if you have read other books written in the 21st century.

Hypnosis
I bought this CD for my son who was recovering from a mini stroke and struggling a little to gain his belief in himself. This CD has helped him immensely.

I myself have also listened to it - the only thing I would say is that I would have preferred at the end that he did not make me come wide awake as I tended to listen to it in bed to help relax and sleep but then would always end up waking up again. It took me a while to figure out why I kept waking up until I listened to it during the day and heard the end, saying that it never did the same to my son.

Getting to grips with Atkins diet
Full of interesting statements regarding this low carbohydrate diet. Does not really give you great deal in the way of menus, you have to take note of the carbohydrate rate of all foods and work round the allowed foods. Have started to follow it and have lost weight already, so I would advise to keep reading the book to firm up the ideal menus for oneself. There are three stages to work towards so it needs regular reading. Having said that I do recommend the book/diet (my husband lost three stone on the original book!)

Secrets of the Baby Whisperer: How to Calm, Connect and Communicate with Your Baby

Our Price: £7.93

New Price: £6.47

Review:
very happy with the book
This book explains how babies"work" and while providing ways of remedying certain problems it leaves a lot for Parents' common sense which I find very valuable.
It encourage understanding rather than ready blanket solutions, which is the key to success.
I am expecting my baby in a couple of months, but I am much calmer and less frightened having read it, as I know much more what to expect (rathe rthan from horror stories published by experienced friends ;) )
I would definitely recommend this book to new moms as prenatal reading.
