Review:
Best book ever
I first read watchers when I was 14, as I got into my twenties I was still thinking about this book it really got my imagination going. I read the book 13 years later to find the book still had me hooked from the first page, I have never really been a reader as I need to get into the book from the start and Dean Doontz does that.I feel that the book seemed a little better when I read it 13 years ago,(your imagination goes wild as a child) but it's a really good read and the best that Dean has written
I must admit since I read it I am a Dean Koontz fan and can't get enough of his books.

I found that you even start to feel sorry for the outsider by the end of the book, It's like a game of cat and mouse and I love it. You will be well and truely hooked.

A Tale of Three Characters
I read this book a long time ago and have recently re-read it for a book group. My opinion of it has changed dramatically now that I am older.

I find Lord Henry Wooton one of the most wicked, selfish, egotistical and self-absorbed characters in English literature. Hypothetically if ever I dined with him I would probably stab him in the hand with the dessert fork. The one slightly redeeming section for him is at the end of the book where he appears a bit naive in response to the intensity of Dorian's despair.

I do think that Dorian is inherantly wicked due to his vanity. However, Basil Hallward has no small part to play in his downfall as he encouraged this by his obsession with his handsome looks.

I love one of the comments in my version of the book. It said that Oscar Wilde was quoted as saying that the world thought that he was Lord Henry Wooton, he, however, saw himself has Basil Hallward, but would like to have been Dorian Gray in other circumstances.

Not the best but still a bloody good read
I have read most of Stephen King's books and as I enjoyed The Regulators I thought I'd give another Bachman a try. The story of the Walk is very easy to get involved in; I read the whole thing really quickly cos I was wrapped up in the characters and the very simple premise of if you get three warnings you die. The ending is dark but I think it tells a lot about life in general and the nature of reality"entertainment" (though I hope even the godawful Big Brother isn't headed this way to gain viewers!!) and the ending does appear quicker than I thought it would!

I would recommend this as it's a decent read but it's definately not the same standard as my favourites (The Shining, Christine etc).

Dracula (Wordsworth Classics)

Review:
Best Gothic novel yet written.
For he who has seen the movies, yet never read the novel, I truly pity that person. The 1931 movie was quite a disgrace to the novel, and although I am certain that Stoker is not rolling in his grave ever since the early thirties, I am sure that the novel is nothing like any of the many movies you might have seen.
Written in 1897 by one of the greatest authors, Dracula is a timeless masterpiece that can only be enjoyed to its maximum when read, and not listened to by another reader (i.e. audiobook etc.)
Each character, from John, Lucy, Jonathan, Van Helsing, and the many other characters have their own personalities entirely, and each have their own thoughts.
The book is written as a collection of each character's journal entries, (other than Dracula and Reinfield's,) and begins much more interestingly than any movie.
For the most part, I think the reader should know that it was Jonathan Harker who first went to see Dracula, not Reinfield as the 1931 movie portrays.
Dracula did not actually wear a cape in the book, but that does not mean he wasn't as Gothic as the movies portray.
One must wonder how vampires are associated with erotica in modern times, for the book did not contain any such. I presume that idea only came from the head of one Ann Rice.
One might start reading the book being on Dracula's side, and hoping Dracula will win in the end, but by the time you are on the last few chapters you will despise Dracula.
Stoker knew how to make anything sound morbid and frightening; snow, for example, in this novel, like in the short story `Dracula's guest' also by Stoker, seemed to get the reader into a feeling of terror and clusterphobia.
I had read this novel for five hours strait without knowing the exact hour, and the whole time I had not one dull moment.
Of the many novels I have read, I think few compare to the brilliancy of this particular one.
When one is done with this book, they will ask themselves `is this story fiction, or not? It seemed so real, so sorrowful, and so macabre.'
Stoker obviously did much research on many things such as zoophugus' and such.
A great novel by a great author.
Recommended for fans of Poe, Shelley, Konstantinos, and any Gothic literature admirer.
If you have still not seen any Dracula movie, I suggest read the novel, then watch the movie. You shall probably not enjoy the movie at all after such a great novel.
I give this ten out of five stars.

Packed With DVD Extras
Neil Gaiman's Sandman collects the first 20 issues of the comic series , and highlights one of the UK's brightest talents in the industry . The story focuses on an immortal being , Dream , who is one of the seven Endless . These demigods are eternally tied to all living things in the universe ( not just on Earth as is demonstrated in the first few issues ).

The book is presented in an enlarged"prestige" format , with high quality paper and binding , as well as recoloured artwork throughout the book . There is also the added extras of Neil Gaiman's initial pitch and plot synopsis for the first few issues , and a complete script for the award winning 'Midsummer's Night Dream' issue .

The book is beautiful , and as you read on ( almost three years worth of issues ) you can see the increasing maturity of Gaiman and his artists . It may be quite pricey , but is certainly no dearer than if you had bought each issue individually ( or even now in terms of the rarity value ) , and represents excellent value .

Thoroughly recommended .

Dracula (Penguin Popular Classics)

Review:
An old favourite; classy, compelling but with old-fashioned pacing
Because the general story of Dracula is so well known, it's easy to think that you'll know all of what's going to happen when you read the original by Bram Stoker. In fact, much of what is in the book is far more pschologically threatening than in any of the gore-fest films we've all seen. Stoker's Dracula is genuinely, breath-takingly menacing... and beyond redemption.

With Dracula you get well drawn characters relating their ghastly experiences, and you're not spoon-fed the narrative -- you have to join some of the dots yourself. There is a dark, sensual overtone to much of the novel (which puts many modern authors, who turn their books into total shag-fests, completely in the shade!), and a complete horror when Dracula is fully revealed.

But there are some downsides. The novel bogs down in the mid-section. The language is of its time -- so it takes careful reading if you're used to modern horror gallop-along novels. And much of the fear and loathing develops in the mind of the reader, not from over-wrought narrative.
So to get the most from Dracula you need to take your time reading it, and put some effort in.

If you prefer your thrills to be a little easier to access then I'd recommend Stephen King's 'Salem's Lot', or watch the film with Gary Oldman. They're not as pure as the original, but they do justice to the concept.

I first read Dracula when I was 14 or so, and it's just as scary now that I'm 40!

Not the movie! Thank my Stars!
I read this book when I was a teenager and after being invited to go see the film(which I review elsewhere) I decided to read it again before viewing the film.
Well it was as exciting now as then.A book that in an oblique way reminded me of"The Body Snatchers". An allegory for our times, a disease that becomes an evolutionary change, where those that are immune are the new enemy.
I found this book well plotted and thought provoking, unlike the film.
Read it!Read it twice!

Renee-from the USA
OMG! I'm thirty-five and addicted! I pre-ordered this book and had it shipped to the US. The states are a year behind in publication dates-mental. This book is better than the first! (And that was my fav book for a year) I loved reading about all the different kinds of witchesin this one. I especially loved reading a book with so much of Alice! Those twins were just creepy. The Grim witch was freaking cool! This one was much darker than any of the others. WOW! By the way, I think I should be president of the"I Love Alice" fan club, please. Just a bit worried for her prescence, or lack of, in the next one. Hope Delaney doesn't let me down.
Mr. Delaney, also please keep writing these... if you have noticed a surge in book sales in Florida- thank my husband - he's been really promoting your books to his middle grades english classes!!!
We are not worthy, but enjoy reading them just the same!!!

What year is it and what am I studying ?
Look if you're going to buy a book about making monsters, then make sure it's the right monster. Shelly wrote Frankenstein in 1818 and rewrote in it 1831 and there are significant differences. It's also good to know which course you're on this York guide is aimed at A Level students and Undergraduates. This guide does reference the 1818 edition and has much useful background information, however the book's analysis is based on the 1831 text. So I cry foul! But I'm not sure who to blame for this misrepresentation of what is actually an excellent guidebook. Just make sure it's relevant to your study. Anyway I must go online for a recharge for what is Franklystein a wasted expense!

Great modern Vampire story,.... think 'Buffy'
I have just read this first book in the series, and I have ordered the second! I didn't know what to expect before I started reading as I had not seen any reviews, boy am I glad I found this little gem! From the beginning it had strong resemblance to Buffy the Vampire slayer TV show, what I mean by that it is not too dark or gory, and there are a few similar situations. I have been waiting for a book with an interesting plot, something to keep me reading, twists, humour, this book has it all. I loved the fact that I did not know who the killer was! unlike some books I have read in the past.

Mix a mind reading waitress, a dark mysterious kind and charming vampire with a small town, throw in a few murders, more vampires, a mix of VERY interesting characters, romance and a great story line, and you have a really entertaining book!

I was unsure to start with about the vampire content, but I have to say this book is a cosy light murder mystery! The only difference is the cast of characters. I also noticed how many different themes run under the main story, such as the story behind the vampires, sookie's past, the town history, unusual bad guys and subtle humour! It makes this book multi faceted, and very interesting..............you really want to read more, I want to know what happens next, I actually care about the characters. To me that says the author has done something right, and I want to thank her!

Priscilla x

Review:
Very Good
So Sandman, this supposed to be one of the best comics in the world and this is the begging volume. Well this volume has recived some critcism which is upsetting. Not because the volume doesn’t deserve the criticism becasue it does, it’s not as good as other volumes. However I think this turns people of, of buying the book. I’ve only read one other Sandman so I can’t say how good the rest it is. However I think people are giving this so low marks becasue they are comparing to the rest of the volumes, which are meant to be really good.

I say this because this it’s self is a really good read, maybe not as good as the other volumes, I don’t know wince I’ve never read them. It is really good though. I wouldn’t say brilliant becasue there are some bits that I didn’t care for. Although I liked most bits fine, I won’t tell you what they are because I don’t want to ruin the plot. I will tell that the imagnation in this book is rivaled by none, never in my life have I read a book that is more imagnative then this one.

The chracters are also very good, you can understand why there feeling as they are, eve though there not they seem to be very human which I like. Another great thing about this is it’s not obsessed with violence, I like comics but almost always there resolved with people beating the crap out of each other, not in this one, in this one’s diffrences are talked through. Okay I know that sounds boring but it really isn’t.

The art annoys me, I’ve never been a fan of this kind of art, it doesn’t have the beuty of Jim Lee’s, even so I will say it goes along with the story and fits it well. One other thing is that Neil Gaiman is kind of inbetween worlds when he was writing this. I’m not sure if he thought he was trying to write a horror comic or something more. Since there glimpses into things very in depth, but some of it is just nothing but horror.

These two things knock the comic down, this is a very good read and I can only hope that the next volume entertains me more. Which would be a miracle since this one really did entertain me.

Vampire Blood Trilogy (Saga of Darren Shan)

Review:
Oh to be a Vampire
The Darren Shan Saga, books 1-12, are the best adventure books ever written, in my humble opinion. It is a universally acknowledged fact of life that Vampires are seriously Cool, with a capital C and cherries on top. Thus the story of an average teenager becoming a creature of the night is compelling. Other fantastically mysterious characters make this book a rip-roaring, but sometimes quite clever, tale. I wouldn't describe it as a horror book, more an epic of the fantasy genre, and I can only recommend it to those who like escaping to more interesting places in a book.

best one yet
This is by far the best Darren Shan book yet full of action, drama but at the same time not going over bored and making the book seem unrealistic. Also in this book I think you really see the relationship between Darren and larten really develop. Darren and larten have been together a number of years and I think they have both developed dramatically over time. I think in this book we see a slightly harder side of Darren which is prepared to fight and a softer side of larten which cares a lot for Darren. I think in this book larten sees Darren less as a assistant and more as a friend. I think from reading this book that there are hard times ahead for both Larten and Darren but they will rise to them.
