The saga of Darren Shan
I began reading the saga of darren shan when I was approximately 14 years old, by chance picking up the first book of the series in my school library. I am now 17 and these series of books have changed the way I look at childrens literature. The style and tempo of the books are deep, meaningful, reflective and at times extremely emotional. They tackle decisions and choices that would be impossible to make and really get the readers thinking and involved in the books. You will instantly be pulled into the life of the teenage boy and empathise with his life, I guarantee you will be unable to put any of the books down without reading as much as humanly possible. The term"unputdownable" has been bounded about a lot recently but these series of books truely are. They include a type of incredible fast paced tempo complete with humour and lovable characters which I have never come across before. Although classed as childrens books I assure you both parents have read them and enjoyed them thoroughly. I would certainly recomend each and every single book of the series to anyone with even a mild intrest in horror. Pick the set up today, you will not regret it.

Captivating Carpathians
Like the reader from Scotland, this was my first Carpathian novel and I'm hooked. However, although it inspired me to read all the others, I have to say that this is the best of the series. It works well as a stand alone novel, although I defy anyone not to want to read more. It has quickly become a favourite, must-have and I thoroughly recommend it to every one.

This story is really good. It has an exciting storyline.
I loved this book. We read it in school and each got to read a paragraph with sound effects too. We made a really mystical atmosphere to the story and everyone thought that it was really good. All of the girls thought that Bess was really brave and in love and all of the boys thought that the Highwayman was really cool. They especially liked the gory bits. At the end, we all made up a story to the poem, only in our english today, not Olde English. Everyone enjoyed it immensly.

Review:
"after a bit of a disapointed book 10, I'm thrilled to say..
that the books have gone back on track!"Lord Of The Shadows" is definitely the best of the Darren Shan Saga so far - with huge twists and unpredictable story lines. The book contains many old faces - Debbie, Alice Burgess, Steve, Evanna, Mr. Tall, R.V., Tommy, Darren Shan (of course!), Annie (!), Harkat (aka Kurda), Evra, and the sinister Mr. Tiny. This book is just so amazing!
The Cirque are moving on to a new destination to perform infront of awed crowds - and they're heading for Darren's hometown! He finds out that Annie has a son, and spies on the two of them for a while, until having to go back to the Cirque. A mysterious young boy shows up at the Cirque Du Freak, called Darius, who recieves tickets for the show. Yet he doesn't show up, but Darren's old friend Tommy Jones - now a huge football phenomenon - does! Darren gets tickets to the semi-finals of a football game, but then Tommy gets brutally murdered by Gannen Harst and R.V., leaving Darren distraught. After getting beaten up by Steve Leopard (the Vampaneze Lord) and Darius - who turns out to be Steve's son - he gets found by two Vampirites, humans who are on the Vampire's sides thanks to Darren's old girlfriend Debbie and an ex-chief inspector Alice Burgess. And Debbie is coincidentally at the house where he is being treated. But after Evanna and Mr Tall tell Darren terrible and frightening things of the Lord Of The Shadows, Darren's life turns pure evil...

The book has a fantastic ending, leaving the reader begging for more. I finished this book in two hours, and wish it was a lot longer! The last episode (boo hoo!) in the saga comes to you on October 14th 2004 - when he will be doing a booksigning at Milton Keynes' Ottakars' Book Store from 1pm-2pm - during school!

A suitable homage to Alan Moore
After being a little disappointed with Gaiman's opening gambit, Preludes and Nocturns I thought that Neil Gaiman was forever going to be in the shadow of Alan Moore, trying desperately to produce a story of the majesty of Swamp Thing. With this story, Gaiman finally comes to maturity in his storytelling, combining magic and dreams with murder and horror and finally reaches the peak he's been looking for. The beauty of the Dolls House is it works perfectly as a standalone novel but even better if read as a sequel to Swamp Thing. My advice? Read Swamp Thing first if you've not already read it, then take this on. It will be worth the wait.

A Fitting Tribute to Trixie
This is a quick-reading, light-hearted Koontz book. I didn't find it at all confusing as other reviews have said here. It does have a lot of Koontz's favourite themes (dogs, supernatural, the same old wise-cracking man-woman relationship, the same evil bad guys) but is that a bad thing? Not if that's what you like about Koontz.

I think it's important to point out that this book is the first Dean has written since the death of his beloved dog Trixie last year, and as such is somewhat of a tribute to her, so that should be borne in mind when reading. I certainly found it moving, especially Chapter 46, having lost my own beloved pet in the past (though a cat, not a dog).

If you like Koontz you will probably like this, and it's worth having in your collection. Not his best, probably, but by no means his worst.

Review:
'The' King novel?
Okay, so I'm not a big King fan. What I have read is okay, but nothing special. That said, Carrie was cool. Then I came to The Green Mile... This is a wonderful book. It deals with such huge themes on such an intimate level, you can't help but be drawn in and captivated. But it's not just the story, or the characters that get you, it's King's writing - it just seems so much farther above his normal standard. For example - `She was black as the ace of spades and as beautiful as the sin you never had nerve enough to commit.' Wonderful stuff! And that's only on page 4. Okay, the book isn't heaving under such evocative narrative, but it's such tiny touches that raise it above the norm.

As for the story/characters? Well, John Coffey does so little, yet does so much. And isn't his fate a reflection on how we really do treat good people in the real world? Isn't King simply holding up a mirror for us, something good writers often do? Who can't be moved by what happens to Coffey and by the predicament Edgecombe finds himself in? Very moving and frighteningly realistic in its worldview.

It's certainly a book I'll be returning to again - a thing I do not do easily!
Review:
best one yet
This is by far the best Darren Shan book yet full of action, drama but at the same time not going over bored and making the book seem unrealistic. Also in this book I think you really see the relationship between Darren and larten really develop. Darren and larten have been together a number of years and I think they have both developed dramatically over time. I think in this book we see a slightly harder side of Darren which is prepared to fight and a softer side of larten which cares a lot for Darren. I think in this book larten sees Darren less as a assistant and more as a friend. I think from reading this book that there are hard times ahead for both Larten and Darren but they will rise to them.

Wizard and Glass
This book has a big fat disappointment nestling in it. I'm hoping that, if I tell you about it now, you will enjoy it a little more than I did, and perhaps give it the four stars it really deserves rather than the three I've settled with.

This is a flash-back novel. It's not a bad thing in itself, but when you've read the first three instalments and left on a cliff hanger, you'd better hope that the momentum keeps up! It does - we get the resolution of the story segment truncated in"The Waste Lands", and it's a good one too. We get a little more as well. And then we get about five hundred pages of flashback, returning to Roland's youth and his - don't get me wrong - very interesting adventures. But these aren't the characters we've come to invest our hopes and emotions in; it's barely even the same Roland, the period of time between them is so great. So you're not reading Dark Tower 4, you're reading that tie-in novel that you probably would have picked up anyway, provided it's second-hand and in good condition. King shamefully weaves it into the fourth novel - or more accurately, plonks it right in the middle - so that the frame of the story, in which the adventures of Roland, Odetta (or Suzanna), Eddie and Jake continue, is something that we have to read so that we're not missing stuff. Really, he should have put the opening on the end of the last book, and the ending on the start of the next, and let us in on the secret that this is not entirely relevant to the story we're reading. It's like cruising at 90mph only to have to take a little detour around a school at 20mph before you can start picking up speed again.

Don't misunderstand - it's a good book. It's worth reading. But it feels a little like filler and doesn't have enough of the characters we really want. Should you buy it after completing"The Waste Lands"? Of course you should! It's great! Just be forewarned that this is a different story to the one you've been reading, and the main characters, the one's you're really interested in, take a back seat to Roland's back story.
Vicky Angel

Review:
A brilliant inspiring book!
First off, I am not that familiar with Jacqueline Wilson's books that are generally aimed toward kids and teenagers but I think in this certain book, Vicky Angel is generally aimed toward older children and even adults. I never knew Jacqueline Wilson's writing style could be so dramatic, tense and overall emotionally impacting that you can barley finish a sentence or scene as the impact was so strong that it was almost sad. Lots of reveiwers have probably explained the plot of the story but here it goes anyway - Vicky and Jade have been best friends since play school and are practically like sisters except one day when Jade and Vicky are quartering over which club they should enter and everything changes. Vicky is accidentally run over and is reported dead in hospital. Jade grieves for her best friend and finds life un-bearable without her. Oddly enough though, Vicky returns but not as herself, as a ghost and yet Jade still finds life especially hard at school and home etc. Vicky continues to boss Jade around and interferes with her life to hopefully make new friends and get on as normal. Jade soon begins to realize that Vicky is telling her what to do, what to say and is practically controlling her life and is making Jade miserable in certain scenes, yet at the same time she cannot face facts that Vicky is gone and she has to let her go, sooner or later if he is going to survive.

At first when Vicky dies you feel surprised and a little over whelmed at how quickly it all happened but the story soon moves on and focuses entirety on Jade's life and how she longs for her best friend but also to continue life as usual and make her own decisions without Vicky interrupting. This book is truly moving and some scenes are very powerful that you can simply not read them. Despite the sadness some characters feel I could not help but laugh at Vicky's practical jokes and how often she uses them. I am also surprised at how well Jacqueline has dealt with the grieving process. I imagined it would be all tears and nothing else but I was pleasantly surprised. However as mentioned above, I do feel as if this book is aimed toward a higher reading group as it was quite serious and sad in some places. Jade and the Vicky ghost stay friends throughout the story but do have their share of arguments and fun filled scenes. I ended up willing Jade on in the hope that she can finally let go and continue life as normal. This was truly a moving read and I recommend it to any Jacqueline Wilson fans. However I do feel as if the ending was a little rushed but apart from that it was a fantastic read. 4/5.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Other Tales of Terror (Penguin Classics)

Review:
Classic
This novel is a classic! Robert Louis Stevenson (of Treasure Island fame) had a dream/nightmare, awoke and immediately wrote down the tale; this novel.
It is only around 85 pages long which is very short, this however is a brilliant thing because most novels are way to long, this can be read again and again in no time!
The story is set in a sinister/magical Victorian London and as most people are aware; it is a tale of dual personality. The good Doctor Henry Jekyll creates a serum to turn himself back and forth into the evil Edward Hyde, after a little time however he cannot get rid of Hyde!
If you love literature, real honest to goodness classic British literature and gothic horror set in the magical world of Victorian, foggy London, then read this!
Classic.
