Splenic Genius - with a Purpose
If you know anything of Charlie Brooker, you'll be aware of his many, many angry but incredibly funny rants at targets on TV but also increasingly examples of dumbness in the non-TV (real) world. There are few writers and broadcasters who can produce such insane levels of bile and hatred so often in such a skilled and drop-dead funny way. This is probably why he's co-written with the ultimate pitch-black dark comedy genius, Chris Morris.

What's less obvious to the casual reader or viewer is that Charlie Brooker writes with equal humour but infectious enthusiasm about the really good stuff on TV and elsewhere. Here's the end of a piece from"The Hell Of It All" on the BBC's"Life In Cold Blood":

"This is likely to be Attenborough's last major series: the final chapter in an extraordinary legacy. To change the way millions of people see the world is no mean feat, and he's done it with quiet assurance, humour and respect. TV can be many things. Nowt wrong with a bit of mindless entertainment now and then. But when someone with purpose seizes and commands it, it can also do this. Incredible."

That's why this collection of Brooker's writing works: light to go with the dark. The extreme bile directed against the latest twerp-fest of a Big Brother or Celebrity X Factor comes from a sense that TV can do so much better, it's not hatred for the sake of it, it's a hatred of lazy low standards when so much better is possible. This is hilarious savagery with a purpose.3

It's QI - What more do you want?
If like me, you look forward to every episode of QI on TV and even watch copious reruns of it on Dave, then you will doubtless enjoy this book immensely.
It is packed with all the memorable nuggets of general ignorance expanded with all the reference information for good measure.
Some of the facts are debatable, of that I am pretty sure, but it is definitely the type of book you won't want to put down until you've read the lot.
One side point worth knowing: if you (again, like me) purchased the original book of general ignorance, you will find this one is the same as the original with about 20 or so extra subjects. If you haven't bought the original, buy this instead.4

Great easy and interesting listening
As you may expect from Fry and Radio 4 this is a very slick production. The whole thing holds your interest, is full of fascinating details and is exquisitely presented and produced. Obviously, if you don't like Fry or have no interest in Metaphors than this isn't for you. Also it's not an academic approach to the subject, it does draw on a lot of Academia but its very much in a light entertainment style. I just listen to odd bits on the drive to work and am very pleased with it.7

Amazingly useless/pointless!
I am shocked that anyone bothered to publish this 'book' or pay the 'author', and wish I had not wasted money buying it! It is unbelievably useless and obvious in every way. I bought it based on other / past positive reviews, thinking it would have some exciting and creative suggestions to keep my 2 and a bit year old busy while I also look after our new baby. Things to do in and out of the house. It is full of the most obviously mundane and normal things which most normal parents naturally do every day with their children anyway. Nothing new or innovative at all! A total waste of money!12

Inspired policy making by the people for the people
As usual Mark Thomas manages to blend humour with a serious political point, this time pointing out that use ordinary folk are effectively excluded from the political process.

All of the manifesto policies were both thought of and voted for by the public. As such, some are well know political"wants" ignored by politicians (e.g. introducing the Tobin Tax), some of them absolutely inspired (e.g. any private health care companies using NHS-trained staff should pay the NHS a levy to reimburse it for the training costs) and some are just darn right funny (e.g. goats should be released into Parliament. MPs will be banned from referring to them!).

It's just a shame that because these policies were created by the people, for the people, they won't be used by the political parties because the general public's views just aren't important enough to matter. Instead of doing what they people want, they'll just carry on bailing out the banks etc. Never mind - the people have spoken and we have our own manifesto now!
13

A nice set of tales...
This makes for a nice, entertaining bed-time read. The book is divided into four parts:-

Bumpy day
Bernie
The waggiest tale
the waggiest tale 2

The tale's are short and make for a nice, quick read. I particularly liked the feel to the book and the images which were provided on each page added to the story-telling. I should add that there is not much text on each page, but being a child's read, I think this is a good thing.

I read this to my young-ones and they thoroughly enjoyed it. I would recommend it as the stories were quite entertaining, even for me! My only gripe is that the book was over too soon!14

Could have been great - but sadly not
I rarely don't give up on books before the end - but this one defeated me.

I'm probably going to disagree with a number of reviews on the book that they were upset that it wasn't true to the original, etc. To my mind that was the whole point, so if the original Pride and Prejudice isn't your cup of tea, I would suggest you'll struggle with this. I ended up skipping the bits in between to get to the 'action' which was few and far between (or at least were i read to c.200 pages) and not well written.

If you're looking for something in this genre, would suggest"Queen Victoria - Demon Hunter" - which is immeasurably more entertaining and satisfying.17

Zombie Survivalists Must Honour This Man
First things first, I'm not really a neutral - I am publishing my own zombie survival guide for the UK in mid-2010 but this volume is an immense work in the field of battling the undead.

Fictional, toungue in cheek & funny - it is a well-laid out overview & blueprint for survival in an America dominateed by zombies.

It is well-illustrated, easy to read & a fantastic present for anyone who is into related movies or games. There are plenty of stories out there - this publication encourages you to think - what if it was?

If you are a zombie fan & you don't have one - shame on you - buy one now to avoid humiliation but it is also fine for the general reader - it is not really gory...

Seriously, it's great fun & good read.18

The world's biggest food fight!
For those of you who don't already know, the vile Mr Gum and the repulsive butcher Billy William the Third have always been best mates. In previous adventures they have managed by one means or another to completely terrorise the town of Lamonic Bibber. Every week Mr Gum would turn up at the butcher's shop for dinner in the shape of a bucket of slops and entrails. One day, Mr Gum doesn't turn up and Billy decides to investigate. He secretly follows his friend down the road and straight to... Greasy Ian's House of Slops, the most disgusting kebab shop ever!

Poor Billy! Betrayed and alone! Revenge is his only option and with that the deadliest war Lamonic Bibber has ever seen begins. Before long dead chickens and various bits of meat are being fired across the streets and things soon get so bad that the entire population is considering leaving town. It's up to the heroes Friday O'Leary, the young girl Polly and a gingerbread man Alan Taylor to try and sort things out. The only way to save their town is to find the woman of Billy's dreams.

This is another great addition to the Mr Gum series from Andy Stanton. There have been criticisms due to the very small part played by Polly and her friends and there is also a rather hefty section of the book dedicated to rhyme like songs which are a bit weak and detract from the normal brilliant storytelling.
However there is no denying that this new Mr Gum adventure is otherwise pure enjoyment. Whether you are a child or an adult the book still manages to be entertaining and hilariously funny. The sheer ridiculousness of the situation and the vile characters are a mix that will have any reader in stitches throughout. If you ask me you just can not go wrong with a giant tank made out of a kebab!

Aside from the excellent plot, Mr Gum is also well written with pace, excitement and a clever twists. For young readers there is a great deal of visual stimulation with different fonts, amusing wordplay and great illustrations. For the parents who might worry about just how gruesome and revolting some of these characters are there is also a strong moral side to the tale. The terrible reality of war is brilliantly broached for the young audience who will understand just how devastating it is for all concerned while still laughing at the offenders antics. The matters of education and truancy is also raised.

All in all this is another fantastic story, perhaps a little weaker than the others but not in any significant way. Everyone who reads this will be laughing for hours and then desperate for the next book to hurry up and come along so that they can once again plunge into the strange world of Mr Gum.

Oh and for those of you who were worried that there was no Jake the Dog mentioned above you will be happy to hear that the huge dog has a short story of his own, in which he causes the Credit Crunch single-handed!20
