A rapid and humourous scan of social history
For me cartoons provide a wonderful social and political commentary and they're funny as well.

It would be possible to list and describe each cartoonist, but I'd rather say that the drawing and punchlines from across the years tell you so much about the issue being lampooned and the period in question.

New to me, was that Tenniel was a cartoonist as well as having produced the best illustrations for Alice in Wonderland

The collection is well put together, it's well worth the Amazon price.
64

Not up to the site's standards
The Daily Mash is probably my favourite comedy site, with a hilarious and fabulously foul-mouthed take on the news, although not something you'd want to forward to your gran!!

However the book is a bit disappointing, and doesn't seem to be of the same high standard, with lots of bits that I usually don't pay attention to on the site, the star signs and celebrity artciles . It's a shame really, the Mash satire is usually so fresh, but taken out of context of the day's topical news, it looks a bit stale and ranty.

Better off sticking with the weekly email, I'm afraid.

66

Great Christmas Present
This book made me laugh so hard I wet myself and my 3 neighbours on the 4.10 to Canterbury East last tuesday. This urinary faux pas resulted in my person being forcibly ejected from the train at some speed, causing a rural pile up for a passing pack of fox hounds and their red-coated masters. Hmmm...Newbiscuit-worthy, I thought to myself, as I dusted off my coat and removed the canines from my left bicep....

This is a great book, from a great website. Good to have all the best articles compiled into this handily portable compendium. Well, portable that is if you're used to carrying a coffee table around with you. I intend to carry it and my coffee table everywhere, and quote from it at random. Has also solved a few christmas present dilemmas.67

Great!
Saw this for sale the other day and noticed it was by the same author who did 'How To Avoid A Wombats Bum' which my 13 year old step-son really enjoyed reading.
He loves this one too as it's great reading for kids/teens etc, full of interesting and weird facts. Great stocking filler which the adults will also enjoy if it's left lying about on the coffee table!

68

Lethargy
The writing style of this book is odd, and at times it reads like a blog or if Lance is recording thoughts and handing them oer to the co-author. In fact the writing style and the short length of the book were the negative points for me. I somehow felt there might be more he could share but then again I guess this is his style, so if you are looking for a great piece of writing you've come to the wrong place. Its also not really an explanation of the cancer experience (I guess thats in the first volume). What it is a description of a man's life, what bothers him, what choices he has made and is making with cancer, his relationship to the disease and the sufferers he actively makes a point of meeting, how he manages to train every day of the year and have a family life (but not very sucessfully as he recently divorced Sheryl Crow- also a cancer sufferer), and his views on lots of issues like religion and even the Iraq war. There is also quite a lot of material which in summary are a dummies guide to how Lance keeps on winning the tour de france, as well as personal feedback on specific races or incidents such as the fall up the mountain in 2003. As a result I think if you are not a cycling or Tour de France fan you would be better off reading the cancer story. However if like me you wanted to get an insight into a sporting and personnal enigma then this is a good read and I couldn't put it down once I'd started.

This book enables even the most ignorant spectator of cycle racing and the Tour de France in particular to appreciate how much more is involved in this sport than the pedalling of the routes of France we see on television. The details Lance Armstrong provides brings both the race and the figures in the peleton to life.
However, much deeper than the insight into this famous race, is the appreciation the reader is able to experience of a very human man with very human failings but incredible strength of purpose and character. He leaves you with the determination to make all your own seconds count.

69

Great for a laugh!
I am a supply teacher and I use this book when I meet a class for the first time. The jokes relaxes the children and encourages them to contribute to lessons as they know that some point during the day they will hear more jokes. It also encourages the them to tell jokes of their own and I use it as a 'carrot' for good behaviour. The children themselves will tell others to be quiet and they often want to read jokes for themself. It works wonders.71

Funny and funnier
Now we all know that Clarkson makes loads of money from selling books full of stuff he has already written in the paper but so what....who cares whether he's making extra money or not when you get to read this much funny stuff all in one book!

We all know he says he's writing about cars when in fact he just rants about complete rubbish for 3/4's of the articles....but who cares when he can make rubbish this funny!!!

We all know that Clarkson is a pompous, over opinionated, biggot....who cares....he's funnier than most other people you can read these days!!

I love this book....I think all the clarkson books are great but this one really is one of his best. I like the fact that they have made a bit more effort and actually put pictures of the cars he is talking about in the book. I probably like it more because it is more recent as well so the jokes are more topical.

If you want a bit of light reading, you know the kind of thing you can lie in bed and giggle to or sit in on a sunday morning and relax to then this is the book for you. Its light hearted, its funny, its easy to read and it offends 90% of the population which has to make you laugh doesn't to really!!

I'm not sure I will ever vote Clarkson for Prime Minister but I would certainly give him my vote when it comes to his writing. Dont think about the fact that he makes money out of this book having already been paid for writing the articles for the paper. It doesn't make any difference to you it just means you get to read all his funniest material in one go, which to be honest, is well worth the money!! In fact, with that kind of money making ability maybe he should be our Prime Minister!!!
72

Humph - He died while he was still tall
I imagined it would be extremely difficult to write a brief, glowing review about something that is linked to the death of one of my favourite presenters/performers.....but this programme, originally broadcast in June 2008, and splendidly hosted by Stephen Fry, is a glowing tribute to Humph. Excellent, funny and emotional contributions from Graeme Garden (who uses the quote in my title for this review.....and how right!), Tim Brook-Taylor, Barry Cryer, Jeremy Hardy, Sandi Toksvig, and many more, make for a really great 50 minutes of listening that you can come back to again and again. Humph was such an unassuming & charming man with a remarkable (aristocratic!) background - friend of Loius Armstrong, cartoonist for the Daily Mail after WWII, jazz legend, and the ultimate chairman of panel games. This Radio 4 programme is a really fitting tribute to a great, great man. You will laugh and you will shed a tear.....an excellent tribute. Highly recommended75

Absolutely hilarious book
A fabulously funny book. I laughed and LAUGHED and LAUGHed. My wife laughed so much a small bit of wee came out, but since having our second child, that does happen every 7 weeks or so.

For me, the enjoyment did not come from the letters being a `wind-up' - the author does not relish in making people seem foolish and does not ever really ridicule them. If they did subsequently read their own responses in the book, I think they'd see the funny side. The humour lies in the totally natural and unforced way the author writes about the bizarre, and his intelligent simple constructs in the correspondence. It avoids the lazy, artificially bizarre (hurling raw fish at a radiator) kind of comedy in favour of something more educated and rounded. The comedy reminded me of some of the more intelligent and less crude articles found in Viz, but a bit more grown-up.

The small details had me in hysterics. "Poor water boy" may not seem too hilarious, but in the context of the letter to the Belgian Ambassador, that single phrase had me howling for several (9) minutes and laughing the next morning (Thursday); at least I think it was Thursday because I remember seeing an offal lorry on that day.
77

One of the funniest books i've ever read
This book is brilliant, karl is basically the worst philosipher on the planet earth, and his head is similarily shaped to the planet earth aswell. its often his digressions in the book which are the funniest, he can't seem to stay on one topic for too long before he's off on a hilarious rant. If you've never even heard of him you should definately give this book a read. and do some more podcasts you bald manc git!
