I cried laughing!
I bought this book as Christmas present but kept putting off wrapping it for weeks cos I died laughing every time I opened it!

This book is hundreds upon hundreds of names (all verified from birth and death certificates) that mostly make your jaw drop in disbelief and horror that someones parents actually stared into their babys eyes upon birth and cooed"hello sweetheart, welcome to the world, Fanny Warmer". I must have a real toilet sense of humour as I found the rude ones so hillarious I found myself guffawing away like a mad woman!

I can't recommend this book highly enough if you just need a quick pick-me-up. Whatever you were down about, after 2 minutes with this your sides will be splitting.86

Made me think
This book made me think about life and how I'm living it (and for those who dislike it, at least read the last chapter, it has the most fuel for thought). Although I don't agree with him entirely I do think that we have become enslaved by the system and serve it rather than it serving us. Many of us live to work rather than work to live and we need to look at how we're living and decide if we really want to continue in misery or change things to suit us. We have moved, unthinking, into the 20th and 21st centuries, all the time moving faster, working harder, striving for something that might be within our grasp if we slowed down and thought about it.

Although I wouldn't be as idle as he espouses, I do think that I wouldn't mind down-shifting my life.

This book is a series of views on a variety of issues from smoking to napping, a book that encourages us to think about our lives rather than just put our lives in neutral and keep going. Agree with him or disagree with him, he made me think about how much of my life is spent rushing instead of enjoying.87

Dark and hilarious
The Perry Bible Fellowship has long been one of my favourite online comics. The author has a brilliantly twisted sense of humour and a good sense of style. PBF is PBF, even though the illustrations vary a lot between strips, as Gurewitch experiments with different styles and techniques.

This book compiles almost hundred pages worth of strips: not all of them, but most. Few of my personal favourites are missing, yet I'm quite satisfied with the collection. There's some material that's previously unpublished, but it's nothing really interesting. So, if you've already read everything that's on the web site and don't want to buy stuff you've already read, this book offers very little. However, I'm rather glad to have it on my bookshelves.

If you've never heard of Perry Bible Fellowship, I envy you: you have a world of sickly sweet pleasure to explore. Check the web site or buy the book: whichever you do, you won't be disappointed.88

The Funniest Thing on Radio
I listen to this driving in to work. It makes me laugh, even on a Monday morning. Trouble is, other drivers think I'm insane or laughing at them and give me grief, glowering at me from their cars. That makes me laugh even more.

Give up on Wogan and The Today Programme and get this instead.
89

Ambiguity
Like many of these encyclopaedias for fictions this contains a lot of completely uninteresting information. However, there are a few really fascinating bits of info - that Ohba regards both L and Light as evil, that neither of the creators liked Near, that Ohba is inspired by the works of artist Jean Jansem. Most interestingly is the fact that both Ohba and Obata emphasised the philosophical ambiguity and the absence of any pretentious, didactic message; for me this is what makes Death Note so fascinating and so open to meandering and entertaining speculation. Death Note 13 also increased my respect for the artwork and the complexity and skill invested into this side of the manga.

The best feature of this bonus instalment was the inclusion of the Death Note pilot. This gives the reader real insight into how the idea developed from an interesting semi-philosophical (meta-ethical) thought experiment into one of the greatest fiction thrillers ever conceived. The flaws in the pilot have been aptly removed from the series, leaving only what makes Death Note the classic manga that it is.90

The only book about jokes you'll ever need
The quote from The Times on the back of the book is spot on: this book is four-fifths a book about the nature, history, and meaning of comedy, and one-fifth the only joke book you'll ever need.

A lot of the analysis in this book is very straight, and to make up for the fact that the main text, though very interesting, is not necessarily laugh-a-minute, they put a classic and relevant joke at the bottom of very page. Brilliantly thought out, witty, intelligent, and well worth reading.91

I say it is old fashioned but not in a boring old way. I love it. I cannot speak highly enough of it.It is great for all ages, i bet my mum wished she had a book like this when she was younger. If you like this book also read The girls book, Things to do with mum, possibly the big book of girl stuff, and the daring book for girls. I have only 4 final words. THIS BOOK IS BRILLIANT!!!!!!92

Fabulous.
I cannot say more than other reviewers, but I od recommend these books. Extremely well written, highly readable, and hilarious. They bear re-reading, much to my surprise, to a higher degree than the Flashman series - which remains an astonishing body of work, but has grown less engaging.

Fraser is wonderful at writing the accents, and capturing the expressions of the soldiers. As a Glaswegian myself I can wholheartedly approve his use of terms such as"See me","How no" and"Aw-haw-hey"!

Thoroughly recommended.

93

Really, just what you need
at a time when the bottom of your world has fallen out - particularly when it's through no fault or doing of your own.

My husband of 13 years decided to have a mid life crisis (at the age of 44!) and came home one day, said he wanted his own space and promptly left. The bottom of my world fell out. I suppose to make matters worst, I have MS and am not in a position to just get up and restart a new life elsewhere. So you could say I really felt shafted.

The shock (this happened in the space of 12 hours) and trauma left me reeling and feeling like I was living in a parallel universe. Then a good friend sent me this book and yowza yowza, does it hit home - in a way friends never could.

There are points made here which will leave you cringing (yep, I did that), nodding your head (as in been there, done that) and with the realisation that a. you're not alone, b. other people make complete fools out of themselves and c. no, he's not coming back, yes, it is over and no, the world (or your life) hasn't ended.

If you are at this stage in your life, you need strength, pride and the wherewithal to move on. This book - through its humour, insight and no punches pulled approach will help you achieve that. If you have the physical and mental wherewithal to put what's happened behind you, then do it and use the wisdom this book offers to help you.94

COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!
OK I admit it, I had bought this book a few years ago before I read it, I always had something more interesting to read , or so I thought! Last year at the end of a frenzied read of books by Phillipa Gregory I was looking longiningly at my book case, wondering 'what next?'. I have read and enjoyed Puckoon, (the only book, I must add which I have read more than once...about five times at last count), and I also enjoyed the Looney and other Milligan works, but I thought that the war memoirs wouldn't be for me. How wrong I was. Once I got into the book I couldn't put it down! Spike brings his experiences to life and I found I was laughing along with him. I have promised to loan the book to my friends, but have so far not been able to bring myself to part with it, there are so many bits I like to read over, and over again!!! This really is a 'must read' not only for Milligan fans but also for those of us who want to know what it was really like during WWII!95

How to encourage a 9 year old to read!
My 9 year old son was a very reluctant reader, it was painful trying to encouage him. Until his teacher introduced him to these books. Within a couple of days I was being begged to buy him the set. He has since gone on to read loads of goosebumps and other similar books - he rarely has his nose out of one. The secret is a mixture of toilet humour, vivid cartoon style text and a sending up of school staff. The only problem is the us spellings but the advantages outweigh this.
His problem is when are they going to produce more?96

Disappointing Gift
I bought this as a last minute christmas gift for my husband, thinking that the book would be witty and clever! I admit that I don't listen to Radio One so perhaps I should have known better.

My husband received the book well on christmas morning and was looking forward to commencing his read later on that evening. As planned, he sat with his book and proceeded to digest the first few pages. I asked how it was and he answered"it's ok".

When we went to bed I took the book upstairs so that I myself could have a sneaky read. Well, I have never been so disappointed with a book before! The style of writing was childish and unimaginative with very basic sentences and turned potentially exciting stories into dull and boring tales. It turned out that my husband agreed but didn't initially want to hurt my feelings.

I would say that whoever you are, you should not write a book if you don't have the skills to do so. Perhaps Chris should have had a ghost writer after all?97

Read this to help their children cope with bullies !
As a teacher of assertiveness training for 25 years, I am delighted with Kate Cohen-Posey's book on handling bullies and teasers. It is clear, concise, comprehensive -- chock full of practical strategies instead of the theories and generalities found in other books -- the best publication I have seen on this important subject. -Naomi Penner98

Top Gear: Midlife Crisis Cars
I thoroughly enjoyed this highly amusing look back at some of the iconic 'midlife crisis' cars. It isn't intended to be a dull tech-heavy look at engine sizes; it's about nostalgia and a reminder of some key cars from our motoring past, plus humorous psychology regarding the British midlife crisis - something we all hope to avoid, but will no doubt plunge headlong into without a hint of irony. It includes some wonderful pictures too.

I found it to be an excellent little book to give to all those cord and hush puppy-wearing Fathers, Uncles and brothers who've bought, owned or dreamed of driving a Lambourghini or Ferrari. Part of me recoils with horror, but another part thinks 'yes, one day.....' Get saving chaps!100

Easy Going - nothing spectacular but enjoyable nonetheless!
An easy-going, quite enjoyable book - I found it effortless and quite funny - perfect for someone who wants something they can pick up and put down without any fear of losing of track of where they got to.
On the flip-side, bearing in mind I like a real page-turner, something a bit gritty - this was not the book for me. I didn't real find that anything about Tony's French adventure inspired me to race onto the next page and to be honest, I'm not sure that I would have bothered writing about my experience if I was him - not a great deal happened.
It was more like a cross between a travel guide, a journal and a GCSE essay.
I hate the words 'nice' and 'good' as they are so undescriptive but in this case they are just right. Nothing amazing - wouldn't recommend it - but have read far worse.
