English Legal System (Law Express)

Our Price: £9.49
Used Price: £7.00

Review:
Surprisingly useful
I was surprised by how much I liked this book.. Recommended texts are so often dull and unhelpful, or don't match your syllabus...But this one was great. It was clear, and each part linked nicely with the next. It wasn't concise, but then law books do not tend to be! A good basis for learning in detail about the English Legal System.

Review:
A useful introduction
If you're looking at this review, you're probably about to start your law degree and are ordering your preliminary reading books. This one is good. It gives you a useful insight into what you're going to be studying when you start your degree. It's very general, but covers a broad range of topics, from the court system of Scotland to just how to go about tackling your first essay. I only bought this because I had to (it was on my preliminary reading list), but I'm glad I did. Take it with you to university, there's been more than one occasion when I've recognised something I'm reading, only to discover that I read about the topic first in this book. It's a good reference guide, at least I've found it to be so throughout my first year of law at Glasgow. Definitely worth a read before you go!

Review:
Thank you
At last a revision guide that tells you what to do as well as what the law is. It's not exam time yet, but I'm using this already for seminars. It makes getting through all the material so much easier - since Land is SOOO dull. The others in the series are just as good. I'm doing ELP, Crime and Land this year - so I've bought the Law Expresses for those too. I'll be getting contract and tort next year.

Passing the National Admissions Test for Law (LNAT) (Student Guides)

Used Price: £50.99
New Price: £14.64

Review:
Mostly good, couple of errors
The shortest and most focussed of the three LNAT books I have tried, although lacks a bit of detail in places and some of the material on grammar doesn't seem to quite make sense.

The sample MCQs were generally quite useful. A couple were a bit ambiguous but on the whole worth trying. Better explanations might have helped, but everything reads fine.

Overall certainly worth a look, but not the best of the books I cam across.

The Future of Ideas

Our Price: £6.99
Used Price: £3.19
New Price: £3.85

Review:
A seminal work
Lessig has a simple, clear style of writing. He explains complex issues well, simplifying but not over simplifying.

Both this book and his earlier book 'code' should be required reading for anyone interested in the impact technology has and will have on society. Technolgy does not exist in a vacuum, it can do good and bad, and Lessig articulates the threats that many of the freedoms we take for granted today face.

Lessig raises significant questions about the role of copyright and intellectual property generally in society. Has the Law swung too far in favour of media moguls and is now threatening creativity? In the rush to squash 'pirates' is the law undermining freedom of expression, innovation, creativity and fair use?

Lessig is a lawyer that understands technology and politics. He writes well too. A book that will be read in 100 years from now, assuming that we will be allowed to!

This is the best and most informative book in these three fields. I bought this along with the which?guide and this is far better. I am currently taking an estate through probate and this book is proving invaluable.

Learning the Law

Used Price: £3.64
New Price: £6.99

Review:
Good read for the beginner!
I have just finished reading"Learning the Law" and have found it to be a satisfactory insight into the world of English Law. It has an excellent section on mooting and mock trials, which I found to be very useful. The only down side about this book, is that the language used to explain certian parts of the law, is far from"easy to understand". Being a beginner I was somewhat baffled by the overly long sentences and believe that Williams could have used a more"user friendly" tone to set the scene as it were. However after a couple of reads im sure I'll be fine and recommend this book to any undergraduate or to anyone with an interest in Law.

A Practical Approach to Landlord & Tenant (4th edition)
I'm new to landlord & tenant law and found this book to be very good. It's clear, easy to read, and easy to understand. Well laid out. Not written like a legal document, unlike other landlord & tenant books I could mention (but won't!!)

A2 US and Comparative Government and Politics

Used Price: £10.00
New Price: £18.73

Review:
It got me through A-levels
A book which maintains that fine balance between telling you enough deatiled information to pass the exam while not overwhelming you.

While not written for any particular exam board I found it particuarly useful for AQA (Politics of the USA) and the comparative UK/US politics unit with chapters closely following that specification.

Like any textbok it dates as soon as it is published so it must of course be supplemented with more recent reading but for anyone doing A2 Goverment and Politics I think it is an essential purchase.

Not a red one
Jonathon Herrings book on Family Law was invaluable to my 3rd Year law studies. It assisted in the basics of family law as well as the more involved issues. It does require some reading around to be done in other texts but does carry most of the information required in understandable language and layout.

Understanding the Law

Our Price: £14.24
Used Price: £9.99
New Price: £12.22

Review:
Outstanding...
Let's face it, studying the law of Britain is about as interesting as watching paint dry but Rivlin's"First Steps in the Law" in paint from would have people actively searching for"Wet Paint". This insight into British Law is factual and strangley humourous and captures the attention magnificently. For those who have any interest in wither the Law or indeed Politics I would recommend this brilliant book. For those studying Law at A-Level this book is of great use but for those at University Level may lack detail in parts. But as it's title suggests this book is the first steps toward understanding laws and it does an outstanding job. I would certainly recommend this book to those thinking of a career in law or once again in politics - these are fascinating subjects, and Rivlin does them justice.
