Good but frustrating to read

This book is a must for anyone stuck in a rut and looking to take a new perspective on their sales career. It is also full of useful tips and tactics to use when selling. One thing I will say is that it is the most frustrating book to read. He repeats things over and over, but I spose that it drills it into your brain. Still a very good read though!

Stands out from the crowd

I have only read half of this book but already have no hesitation in recommending it. It stands out from the crowd. The author is writing from his experiences as a psychotherapist - and by all accounts he must have been quite successful. There are exercises to perform which are not too demanding but give you a good insight into your relationships, success at work and areas to improve on. I've already highlighted areas to concentrate on and feel very positive. We need more books like this - by professionals with real experience who know what they are talking about.

good read, but ....?

Found it an interesting read about the possibility of reincarnation but also found i was asking questions throughout, such as if all humans have souls that go to the spiritual planes then reincarnate to learn and become higher beings - no mention was made of animals (referred to as beasts in the book) which i presume would also have to have a soul or spirit as they are living beings and as anyone who has owned a pet would know are individually unique too. Reading from others who can claim to contact"spirits" usually always mention pets that have passed over. so i am a bit skeptical about this book. The bits about being spoken to by the"masters" also made me very doubtful and eventually take it all with a large dose of salt!

Brilliance

I really enjoyed this book and found it difficult to put down. I learned a lot from this book and even now - can rhyme off 10 impactful lessons I have taken on board. The best one worked for me so well, I am really happy with the output. I recommend this book to anyone who needs to mould their mind into a more professional shape.<br /><br />Amanda Cook<br />

The book is a treasure but the audio tape is disappointing

I first came across the works of Kahlil Gibran almost 40 years ago and my aging copy of The Prophet remains one of my most treasured posessions to this day - the spiritual clarity and compassion in this little book have been a guide to me through every stage of my life so far so I had high expectations of the audio tape.
Unfortunately,in my opinion, Renu Setna's reading of this classic work is just dreadful - he succeeds in entirely stripping the work of any passion or emotion as he grinds through the reading in his bleating, monotonic voice.
Penguin Audio have really missed an opportunity here as there are so many excellent actors that really could have done justice to this book - Renu Setna however is not one of them.

A Life Changing perspective on the Gospel of the Kingdom.

This book within one read has radically changed my perspective of Jesus’s ministry and ultimately along with the work of the Holy Spirit changed my life forever. The graceful and concise teaching contained within, backed by experiences has left me feeling encouraged, challenged and empowered.

This book begins to bring words to what many of us have read and believed for years without seeing it within our lives. Bill Johnson has been ministering for many years and is a fifth generation pastor. He articulates the point of bringing ’Heaven to Earth’ through this book in a unique and insightful way, inspiring us to do the same. I was fortunate enough to hear him teach from this book and The Supernatural Power of a Transformed Mind (his second book, also a must buy) in Brazil, on a Global Awakening mission trip in 2005 and it was incredible! Everyone was taking notes and I mean EVERYONE, nearly word for word!!!


A top book and a must have for study and as practical guide. The revelation that ’us, regular guys and girls’ can be used by God in supernatural ways, to bring heaven to earth is priceless and will aid you in fulfilling the potential God has within you for your life.

After listening to the CD it was a if a load had been taken off my shoulders, and I'm only slight of build! This has absolutely astounded me in what it has done. If this is chakra clearing then it is something I have needed all of my life. All what I will say is that you should just buy, you will never regret it. I think this review somehow also appears on the Cosmic Wish Cards page but I am on about the Cosmic Ordering Chakra Clearing CD.

Not a universally accepted viewpoint by scientists

"God" is clearly important enough to have generated a vast plethora of literature for and against "Him".<br /><br />Whilst quite clearly presented and logical, Hitchens axiomatic basis for existence is for physical"obersvability" in some sense. Yet this is the the longest standing argument of asthestic philosophy, not something new. <br /><br />I would love to see Hitchens expand his axiomatic basis for existence to encompass arguments that were new and more convincing that 'I cannot see(observe)' so 'I dont believe'<br /><br />Our own existence is confounding enough - I am not sure humanity has truly solved this mystery.Why are we self aware? Who and what are we?<br />All this before what is"God"? <br /><br />Paul Davies 'Goldilocks Enigma' and the 'Mind of God' present an alternative scientific viewpoint - he is a theortical physicist and comologist- the axiomatic basis for his arguments here are different. Why are we who we are and what exactly are we produces deep questions as to existence and in my view more fruitful than the 'prove he doesn't exist' approach of the God Hypothesis which is essentialy based on only one line of argument.<br /><br />All in all great to see so much God talk like in this book.Its definitely the way forward but this book does not indicate the end of the road.<br /><br /><br />

A book that shows happiness should not just be your goal, but your duty...

I was drawn to this book having read the chapter about it in Tom Butler-Bowdon's 50 Psychology Classics. I had never heard of 'positive psychology' before, but its aims - to increase the happiness of 'normal' people, rather than cure the psychoses of 'ill' people - has definite appeal. <br /><br />Authentic Happiness suggests that happiness should not just be a goal in itself merely because it makes us feel good - but also that it has an evolutionary advantage. I've long been aware of the way in which as negative mood can aid evaluation of a situation, but I'd never thought that when we are happy we would have the advantages of creating an expansive, tolerant and creative mindset. In short these positive feelings maximise the social, intellectual and physical benefits life has to offer.<br /><br />But how do we achieve such happiness? As ever, that's the million dollar question. One of the answers is through optimum experiences which Mihaly Csikzentmihalyi calls 'flow'. Indeed it is one of Seligman's characteristic flourishes he relates the story in which he rescues Csikzentmihalyi. Make no mistake, there's a lot of information to digest in Authentic Happiness, indeed I'm looking forward to re-reading it to get even more out of it. Yet while it is academically thorough, Seligman adds personal touches which make the book much more easy to digest. <br /><br />The later stages of the book will be of particular interest if you have children. Fittingly Seligman has a optimistic view of human nature. He has his own ideas of how we can achieve transcendence and how we can all part in the evolution of the human race, but you'll have to read"Authentic Happiness" to find out what these are.<br /><br />I can't say I agreed with everything that Seligman had to say - and I'm not really one that enjoys filling out questionnaires, though if you are you'll be in form heaven here - but this is one of the books I find myself recommending to other people and can see myself returning to again and again.

practical approach to confusing spiritual practice

I find it interesting in his approach of daily spiritual activities, which are nicely mixed with ancient indian spiritual wisdom and current scientific findings. I kept remainders in my calendars. Many times, I forget them to be rescued by these remainders . for example he talks of accepting the uncertainty of our best intended actions. This daily remainder he mentions makes me calm down in the daily battle of life of survival. Great book<br />

Genius

Whoever wrote this is very clever to have written a best-selling book consisting of facts made up entirely on the spur of the moment. For the same reason, please check out the 'Angel bible', the 'homeopathy bible', the 'pixies-at-the-bottom-of-my-garden bible' and the book I'm currently considering writing, the 'underpant bible' about the healing power of underpants. It's all to do with quantum vibrations. And energy and stuff.

Bought this today...

... and have just finished reading it. My boyfriend is away for 2 weeks, and things will be a-changing when he gets back! Fantastic reassurance that being a 'nice girl' is not how to get what you want.

Helped alot

After passing this audio cd in the shops many times i decided this time to buy it as i suffer from very bad anxiety and i have to say out of everything that i have tried for anxiety this has helped me the most.<br />You are guided by a pleasant voice in to deep relaxation and by the time the cd has ended your whole body feels deeply relaxed you feel more positive and anxiety is alot better. I felt so much relief from my anxiety because of this cd.<br /><br />I hope to listen to other audio cds by Glenn Harrold

Extremely Useful"How to" Book

An excellent book looking at why but more importantly how couples argue, distinguishing unhelpful sytles from helpful styles. It gives clear guidance on steps to take to make a change. We argued and it has caused significant damage to the relationship over a period of years. I was unaware of what was going on in an argument, how its a behaviour dynamic between the two of you, how your behavior has part to play (tough to accept but true) even if your certain its your partners fault. Another excellent source looking at this is Divorce Busting by Michele Weiner Davis or her more updated 7 Step Divorce Avoiding Programe. These are very good,"how to" books. To understand the behavioral risk factors for divorce I'd read the 7 Principles for a Successful Marriage by John Gottman. Thats based on research findings and is excellent again with specific where to start material. All of these are written by people with lots of practical experience in their subject which I believe is a must for real life problems.

I cannot put into words the amount of value within this book...

The first time I opened this book, I just read it without stopping for a break. After finishing it I went back over to the MANY places in the book where the wisdom just re-shaped my thinking completely. The next day I read it again... and have re-read it too many time to count ever since.<br /><br />The amount of value, the wisdom, the laughter, the perception of the human condition, the beauty of this book is pretty overwhelming.<br /><br />If you want to understand the stupidity within the human condition then read this book... If you want to know what happiness really is then read this book. If you want to wake up... read this book.<br /><br />I would recommend this to anyone who is walking on the planet. It's that good.<br /><br />D.

A curate's egg: good in parts

Fundamentally, this is an interesting and useful book, because it provides a very descriptive overview of the personality types that are emotionally unavailable. My problem with it, however, is that there are better books on this subject available. <br /><br />When we encounter relationship issues that seem as inexplicable as they are frustrating, we need help in understanding the true nature of the problem. Often, we also need to see that a partner's dysfunctional behaviour may have nothing to do with us. So this book does a good job of explaining what you're up against. In that sense, it will make many people feel a lot better and stop them blaming themselves for something that isn't their fault. <br /><br />While many, if not all, of the personality types listed exist in some form or another, the reality is that you cannot categorize everyone who exhibits certain character flaws into a set range of groups. It is too simplistic. In the final analysis, this classification only helps you understand the problems rather than providing effective strategies for dealing with them.<br /><br />What you may really need is help on is evaluating the seriousness of the flaws we are exposed to. What often motivates people us to read books such as this is the need to determine whether a relationship can be salvaged or whether, for our own sake, we need to cut and run. The danger of the generalised profiles in this book is that they can lead us to form an exaggerated perception of flaws we encounter, or, conversely, to normalise behaviour that is totally unacceptable. So, don't rely on it alone. <br /><br />When we are the victims of unreasonable behaviour, we need to evaluate whether the perpetrator has one of three things:<br />1. A character flaw or psychosis that can relatively easily be addressed through therapy<br />2. A true personality disorder that may or may not be helped by sustained therapy over time<br />3. Serious mental illness that may never be overcome<br /><br />At the end of the day, we're all human, so we're all flawed to a lesser or greater degree. So what this book fails to provide an adequate continuum of behaviours across each personality type in order to help you evaluate the extent of certain the seriousness of certain signatures behaviors. <br /><br />I wish the book did more to help the reader address the problems. For instance, what are effective communication techniques to engage someone with serious issues? How should you set and maintain boundaries in such situations? What is an appropriate response to unacceptable behaviour? Another minor gripe is that this book seems aimed more at women than men. But men can equally be the victims of emotionally unavailable women. <br /><br />I don't want to be too hard on this book, because it has much to offer. Above all, it could be the catalyst you need to start taking control of a difficult relationship problem instead of being a victim.

Feeling smart, feeling good...

Ever since I read Martin Gardiner's book on multiple intelligences, I have been intrigued by the study of how we learn and the different types of intelligence. No one disputes that mathematical/analytical brain-power is a very different type of intelligence from the kind of bodily intelligence that makes someone a graceful gymnast or a super athlete; while there is often some cross-over between the kinds of intelligence that make for good mathematicians and good musicians, the kinds of intelligence that are brought to bear on different parts of our lives get developed in different ways.

One of the more controversial and overlooked types of intelligence is Emotional Intelligence. I do not agree with the idea that one's EQ is in some way opposite from the IQ, the standard intelligence quotient idea (which in and of itself is calculated and reliant on different criteria depending upon the test). I don't believe that Goleman ever makes such a dramatic claim as to show a precise inverse relationship between the EQ and IQ. He does show that there are different kinds of difficulties that can arise, and that a high IQ does not necessarily (or even often) translate into a high EQ.

After a brief introduction exploring the general issues of intelligence and the power of emotions, Goleman
looks at new discoveries in brain anatomy and architecture, particularly as it pertains to what happens when emotions 'take over'. The second, and longest, section of the book looks at the nature of Emotional Intelligence. This is being able to understand oneself as well as others, being able to control emotions (or not), and drawing on Aristotle's phrase from the Nicomachean Ethics, being able to have the right degree of emotion at the right time for the right reason for the right duration. Goleman's third section incorporates the general ideas of Emotional Intelligence into the broader context of living, stating that one's emotional intelligence is in fact a more critical factor than pure computational intelligence at being 'successful' in many important parts of life - from personal relationships to professional relationships, self-satisfaction and self-growth, emotions often hold sway over traditional 'intelligence'. The fourth section examines developmental issues, leading to the final section exploring what happens when such development goes wrong.

Goleman's observation that children seem to be increasingly depressed, despondent, violent and unruly than in the past may or may not be accurate - unfortunately, such comparisons with the past often rely on shaky anecdotal evidence or studies whose parameters are different, and thus whose conclusions cannot be accurately compared. However, it certainly seems that these are true observations. Goleman warns of a coming crisis as unprepared children face an adulthood full of emotional stress and crises for which they have not developed coping skills. Goleman calls for more emphasis on emotional intelligence issues - anger management, conflict resolution, sense of self, etc. for school children to reduce violence and potential for crime.

Overall, this book presents interesting ideas. The idea of Emotional Intelligence is fairly new, and will no doubt be adapted and revised in the coming years. Goleman's task here may be less of a comprehensive overview rather than an introductory shout to the community that needs to address the issue.
