Memory, but Imagining is More
Great memory aids, but they need imaginative use. Try adding Peter Cave's CAN A ROBOT BE HUMAN? - to make the memory aids worthwhile. While I BEFORE E is great at what it does, using it to think imaginatively about lots of dilemmas adds another dimension. I'd not have thought of this, until I came across both Parkinson's book and Cave's - Parkinson reminds us all of stuff we may have forgotten, but Cave's helps us then to make use of our thinking powers over a whole range of mind-blowing dilemmas and paradoxes, from grammar to rationality to religion. Yes, make use of the past - but to be trite - look also to the imagination and future.4

Make school more interesting
Tony Buzan has been at this mind mapping stuff for a while now and I wish someone had given me this book when I was at school. Its really easy to follow and before you know it your kids will be drawing colourful spider diagrams full of facts that help them with their school work. I gave one to my nephew and I've never seen him so interested in his homework.5

Become a London-bore!
This is an excellent 'by the bed' book for dipping in and out of. Each section has a generous selection of interesting gems and more bizarre nuggets about the capital that will make any reader an instant London Bore or a valued member of any pub-quiz team (admittedly only for the London questions!). Certainly a book worth having even if you don't have a huge thirst for knowledge about London - this will gently change that without you even noticing.6

A fun way to learn some Spanish words
This is a little book of 25 Spanish crossword puzzles. Maybe puzzle isn't quite the right word here as each puzzle only consists of around six words! Still, it's only easy if you know all the words. You're likely to pick up some useful vocabulary even if you are an intermediate student as I could only manage to finish two puzzles unaided out of the 25. There's a list of the 150 Spanish words used at the back of the book and the solutions. I used to do a puzzle each day and found it sort of amusing. If you get bored with the puzzles, then you can always colour in the pictorial clues. Plus it's dirt cheap. Recommended.<br />7

Dead Boring Killers
As a 'Killer' addict, and having enjoyed Book 2 very much, I found Book 3 slightly disappointing. The sum box patterns are all rather similar, never irregular, and therefore quite boring. However, there are loads of 'tough' and 'deadly' Killers to exercise the grey matter!10

More addictive than Sudoku
Killer SuDoku is so much more entertaining than SuDoku. The grid is the familiar 9x9 but most grids have no starting numbers. The only clues are the groups of squares with the total in the top left. If you have ever played SuDoku and Kakuro then you will find it easy to get started. Unlike ordinary SuDoku it can require some arithmetic. Each puzzle has a time it should take which range from 7 minutes to 90 minutes. You can always skip some of the"Gentle" and"Moderate" puzzles if you find them too easy, or save them for when you are feeling brain-dead. I'm not sure I every want to go back to ordinary SuDoku again!<br /><br />The Times puzzles are well constructed and it seems like they have been designed with a particular route to the answer in mind. There are not many Killer Su Doku books around at the moment but this is probably the best.12

This is an incredible short trip into knowing yourself and looking at your own personality from the different dimension.It is a great tool to find out more about your mates or family, as it subtly reveals their personality, without them knowing it. A lot of fun! Defenately recommend it.14

the big let down
you make it all the way to the end, the last puzzel, number 100, and you do it wrong and cant see why. take a look at the answers in the back, and oh no, the puzzle dosnt work. even in the answer there is the additional 7 that breaks the puzzle. <br />big let down to an otherwise challenging entertaingin and fun book15

Su Doku the way it should be
If you now consider yourself a veteran Su Doku solver, this is the only level you should be considering (apart from Killer). Unless you want an easy life, anything less will not suffice. 'Difficult' Su Doku requires you to stop and pause occasionally, but 'fiendish' is where the grids become genuinely satisfying challenges which can take over an hour to complete, and with 200 grids to solve, you'll not be rushing through to the end of this one. This is an excellent value collection from the popular The Times series that will last you ages. Su Doku at its best.<br /><br />Hours of fun and frustration await you. You will almost certainly need a pencil for this book and it is, of course, not the place for beginners to start...16

An essential bible for Scrabble players at all levels
An easy-to-use ultimate Scrabble adjudicator. This fourth edition now reflects all new words in line with the latest edition of Chambesr dictionary and lets players get on with the delight of the game without resorting to argument over word acceptability. But as well as an arbiter, it's a great book for dipping into to pick up some seful words to play. My copy is already riddled with highlighter and I find fresh exotic words to impress opponents everytime I flick through it! The list of the essential two's and three's with definitions in the appendix serves to persuade newer players that, yes, those strange combinations are indeed real words!18

Perfect to add to the bathroom library...
This is a great book whose home should be either one of two places: your bag (do on the bus on the way to work), or next to the loo (need I say more?) Either way, it ensures that all those minutes you usually spend thinking about nothing are productively spent training your brain.<br />It has all the obvious brain teasers, like Sudoku and memory tests, but my faves are the mental arithmetic-style ones. Perfect amount of questions for when nature calls!<br />The book has a useful introduction, and the brain teasers progress throughout the book from"Beginners" to"Advanced". Would definitely recommend!19

A rich variety of puzzles
A very nice book, this one, with 100's of several types of puzzles, most of which I hadn't seen before including Corral, Deja Vu (a quite easy type for a change!), Eminent Domain, Alternate Corners, Variations of Battleships, Dominoes, End View, Hex Loops, Lighthouses, Minesweeper, Nurikabe, Rain Clouds, Skyscrapers (my own favourite), Spiral Galaxies, Snaky Tiles, Square Routes, Tents (another favourite), Fences, Pentomino Fences, Oxtails, Spokes & Number Place (Jigsaw Sudoku).<br /><br />Plenty of original entertainment for puzzle enthusiasts for a fiver! Absolutely recommended.
