A fab series
These books - and I have picked this one as I have been reading it to my youngest - are rare indeed: children's picture books which absorb the child and don't drive the parent barking mad with boredom.<br /><br />These books work on several different levels, and an intelligent and diligent child with a fairly simple reading vocabulary (anything from a smart Y1 to a Y4) will be kept quiet for hours: there are so many things to find on each double page that even Mum doesn't always manage it.<br /><br />Brilliant concept. Brilliant execution. Full marks.65

Disappointing repetition of old material
Gardner's original book, Mathematical Puzzles and Diversions, was excellent, which is why I wanted more of his books. Unfortunately, this book is simply a repetition of part of that original book, which now seems to be spread thinly and among a number of other books, with many fewer pages and much larger print. Seems like a deliberate reduction in number of words per pound sterling.67

I really liked the variety of the puzzles here, and some particular ones including Filomino. However many of the 'easy' ones were still pretty tough and normally my family and I are quite good at these kinds of things- perhaps an off day on our part?! :)68

If, like me, you find cryptic crosswords from The Independent and their ilk totally impenetrable, this great little book (written by an actual compiler) will almost certainly cut through most of the mystique.
Skinner teaches the reader his own method for recognizing the different types of clue and how to go about solving them. His explanations make the derivation of the solutions extremely logical. From knowing nothing initialy, within around ten pages I managed to complete the first practice crossword without cheating once!
Now the caveat: as Skinner (quite correctly) maintains, the best way of learning how to do crosswords is to DO CROSSWORDS, which means that the last two thirds of the book are exactly that: crosswords. Having said that, they do come with fully exploded solutions (which newspaper versions lack).
This book will let you tackle cryptic crosswords in no time at all. Definitely recommended.

At last! My opportunity to better myself ...
As a child of the 60s, the second comic my parents regularly bought me was 'Treasure'. (The first was 'Bimbo', believe it or not.) As far as I can recall, 'Treasure' was about 90% cartoons and captioned picture stories, and 10% big, offputting chunks of text.<br /><br />On the other hand, my next-door neighbour Peter Whitfield subscribed to 'Look and Learn', which seemed to be pretty much the opposite: 90% text, and a token 10% cartoons. Whenever I was round at his place, I only ever bothered to read the cartoons. He eventually won a place at Cambridge, by the way, and I might reluctantly admit that 'Look and Learn' might have sown the seeds of his eventual academic success.<br /><br />But now, 40 years on, I'm going to get my own back. Forget the kids -- this book's for me! Brilliant illustrations, bite-size chunks of information, and the truth as it was viewed in the 1960s. Now where's that university entrance form?71

Good dot to dot book
This is a very good book. 11 large double pages of dot to dot drawings with typically between 4 and 6 different dot to dots on each double page. The different creatures are colour coded and there is some text naming and in some circumstances describing each animal (pedantic parents will be pleased to note that the book is explicit that dinosaurs are always land based - the flying reptiles of the period are pterosaurs and the swimming reptiles of the period are plesiosaurs). Some of the dot to dot pictures are quite simple but some are large and complex with more than 80 dots.For me, the best bit of the whole book is a key page at the end showing, naming and giving the correct pronunciation for 38 dinosaurs - after all these years I now know how to pronounce diplodocus.

Wholly agree with the two previous reviewers. Conceptis puzzles don't let you down; no matter how difficult they are, the logic is always there - even if it takes you some time to find it. I got more satisfaction from completing this book than from any similar challenge.79

If you’re looking for a book on paper planes for young people then this may be too complicated. the models very quickly require a level of skill that would be beyond a beginner. There is a definite lack of instruction as to how the planes are folded and you may need to look ahead several times to see how the current fold works out. And at least 3 of the planes are just variations of each other so you don’t end up with that many different models in the long runThat being said the models themselves are good flyers and the achievment in making them makes this a good book for Origami enthusiasts. For the more able Mathematician, this is a truly great book!
This review is not intended to tell you lots about the book, only about who the book is aimed for. I bought this book with the expectation that it would have lots of puzzles suitable for the"average Joe", or there abouts and would require some level of Mathematical thinking so would be nice, light hearted practice for my students ( I am a secondary school maths teacher). The level and style of the puzzles varies, but the majority of problems are aimed at those who are capable of attaining grade A at GCSE Mathematics and it does have some fairly complex solutions. The layout of the book is also fairly old fashioned. It was first published in 1971 and the font and presentation is in line with what you would expect of a book published at that time. If you are looking for puzzles involving a higher level of mathematical thinking and a variety of styles of problems however then this book does suit this purpose.In summary, this book may be great or fairly useless, depending on for what purpose it is wanted.
