Excellent for revision
I think this is the best revision book there is for A-level English language. It covers all parts of the cours (all exam boards) including language analysis, child’s aquisition, language change and variation and language interaction. I have found it extremely helpful as it condenses everything down into bullet points and is very easy to understand. However, you also need to do further reading to get more detail, but this book is a great starting point and for revision.23

Of Mice and Men is an extremely deep and meaningful book, it's full of morals and steriotypes, which are protrayed quite simply in the book, yet it's possible to miss them. York notes picked up on EVERYTHING important in the book. From the lonleness of Crooks, Lennie and Curly's Wife, to revenge seeking Curly, and the simple minded Lennie. The book starts off my setting the scene, you get a picture of why the things in this books happened, mostly because of societies downfalls at the time, remember the book is written around the Great Depression.
And ok, i know what you grade A students are thinking, you probaly wrekon your way to good at English to need these books. But i was a grade A student, and these books really helped me to achieve exceptional pieces of work and A* Grades. So swallow your pride and get one!

Can't praise this brill book enough
As a first time mum I bough a number of books from helping to get pregnant to coping with pregnancy to coping with pregnancy but this book is by far the best. I found it so funny and reassuring as most things mentioned in each week were things I waas going through. It helped to know what has happening to my body and how I was feeling emotionally was completely and it really became like a friend to me throughout the long ten months.
I cant recommend it enough and now my baby is safely with me I am back on amazon looking to see if kaz cooke has written a follow up, which thankfully she has!
Buy this book, you wont be disppointed.

25

There are 101 idioms with cartoons, followed by a dialogue or a description. At the back are translations of the dialogues and a list of the idioms in alphabetical order and by key images. So, if you know you want to something to do with 'dogs' for example, you can look up dog and find the idioms associated with that image.
I can't recommend this highly enough. It helps you practise your French without even realising that's what you are doing. I'm intending to order the proverbs as well! it is a real bargain. It was worth that just for the laughter it brought.

Fun and useful!
I *love* this book. I bought it because of a recommendation by another reader and it's everything they promised. It had me in fits of laughter and I started using the idioms immediately because the pictures and the explanations show you the circumstances where the idiom is appropriate. I surprised the French speakers I know by my sudden use of apt figurative language. It really is fun to be able to use these sayings. The cartoons are amusing and each one is followed by a dialogue where the saying is used so you can see how it will fit into a conversation. I couldn't stop using them but luckily the people I was addressing were tolerant and highly amused. There are 101 idioms with cartoons, followed by a dialogue or a description. 30 days hath september, April June and November
Only one minor criticism of this book is that it does not have an index. With computers it is very easy to do an index and any serious book should have one.

I still use the rhyme for the days of the month the famous Thirty days hath September etc

To spell or not to spell taught me that the mnemonic for DIARRHOEA which is a very difficult word to remember and is Dash In a A Real Rush Hurry Or Else Accident.

A common mistake because people get confused with the American spelling is licence / license and practice/ practise

s is the verb and c is the noun, that's the rule that runs the town.

A great little book which deserves a lot of study. It is a must for fans of arcane trivia. There were things in there that I had never heard of such as the taxonomic classification and the Buddhist ten states of mind.

A great present for those who think they know it all. They will soon realise they do not.

If you take time to memorise the contents of this book you might achieve number ten being Buddha, the state of perfection.27

A wonderful cookbook
Since I started using this cookbook I've used very few others. OK it requires you to have a bit of basic knowledge/common sense, but the recipes are straightforward, generally require very few ingredients (avoiding that awkward problem of ending up with cupboards stuffed with peculiar odds and sods that you've only ever used once) and, most importantly, the results are supremely tasty. My only real gripe with the book is that the sizes of the baking tins are never mentioned, so you may end up with either too much or too little pastry depending on the size of tins you possess. It would be better if it was stated in the recipe whether the quantity made filled, say, an 8" tart case. However, all in all this is a great book that's given me hours of pleasure and therefore deserves a five star rating.28

I thought it would be a lot worse.
I got this book because it's one of those historical things you have to read. My best friend had told me it was basically Hitler's"livejournal". I expected it to be hateful rantings the way some people have claimed it is in these reviews here.

I did not find it to be such at all. The book makes some very, currently relevant criticisms of aspects of modern political systems. There is no pretending it doesn't. Having read this book I cannot say that Hitler got nothing right, he was clearly very intelligent and he clearly got quite a few things right. Of course the anti-semitism is there. What does one expect from a German nationalist in those days? Even so I think that there are things we can learn from this book, despite some of the bad things that were done by the Third Reich. Additionally it is quite engaging and entertaining. I am glad I read it. The edition I have has the most laughable commentary, all the footnotes make the most petty swipes at Hitler. As if the fact that he caused a horrific war and slaughtered people in death camps was not enough? No I am sorry, this is a good book. It says interesting and often worthwhile things. Murdering people wholesale in camps bad. Mein Kampf... actually quite good. We need to learn to separate things before we reach a point where all good things are tainted by the bad they've been associated with and the only possible socially acceptable thing is catatonia.29

Usual Dummies style - easy, well layed out and informative.
Excellent book. Covers all the basics and also goes more in depth. The chapters explore the technical side of digital SLRs in a easy going well paced text. The illustrations and photos serve to enhance the understanding, rather than the author showing how totally amazing they are at taking photos and leaving you wondering. The last few chapters move from the technical side of photography, into the artistic side of composition and editing.

This book would suit someone completely new to photography, through to the person making the move from film to digital.30

Cool Camping: France
I love this book!

It's full of variety, from staying in tipis in central france, to lush open spaces where you can pitch your tent by the sea. There are loads of gorgeous photos that make you want to be outside, and the reviews are personal and funny which is a refreshing change from the soulless camping / carvanning guides out there. There's also extra practical info like 'food and drink' recommendations and options of other places to stay 'if it's full', really handy if you've not done much research before heading off.

Would definitely recommend this book to anyone. I was a hotel comforts girl, but now I'm a camping convert, and off to France this summer!

33

Great (Especially for GCSE's)
Well there comes a time where spanish tests linger in the air like a wave of grief but then there shines a hope... PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT guide. Currently i'm taking my GCSE's and within a few lessons we were bombarded with such complex knowledge that we were simply meant to grasp and take in immediately... However, as many may have found (especially in languages), that perhaps the teacher does not explain as well as it could. The answer to the problem? This book right here explains every tense from the present subjunctive to the perfect past in detail with exercises that are built to test understanding. The book itself is split into different section referring to the different tenses (e.g Unit one- preterite tense). The book also gives clear explanations of the different conjugations of regular (and irregular) verbs making the different tenses so much easier to decipher.

To add to the excellence, a must have glossary to get an A* is given at the back of the book with very helpful terms, verbs etc and also in the front aresomevery useful explanations that might just help bump up your grade and fill the holes that the teacher left out.

A truly outstanding guide that was worth every single penny.34

At first I found the play a bit slow, but half way through Act One I found myself engrossed by the emotional characters and dramatic storyline beginning to unfold. I couldn ’ t put it down! Arthur Miller truly is a brilliant and talented playwright. ‘ All My Sons ’ is in my opinion one of his best works. I am eager to see a dramatised version!

Excellent addition to the coffee table. . . or museum
Regarded as a classic by many, Seymour's tome has slipped sadly out of date and the 2003 relaunch did little to correct some aspects which - in Britain at least - have been overtaken by legislation. To recommend a swill bucket for pigs is inexcusable as contaminated swill is generally accepted to be the cause of the 2001 foot and mouth outbreak.

There's a lot of interesting stuff - including Seymour's unusual and ill-informed culinary ideas - which will keep you amused, but little for the serious smallholder. It is rarely looked and never consulted on our farm.

One fellow-farmer, on being asked if he followed Seymour's advice, said he would love to, but the day had yet to be extended to 37 hours.38

This would be a good investment
I'm studying Hamlet at the moment and due to the nature of Shakespeare's over descriptive and complicated yet beautiful language, it's quite hard to follow and concentrate upon the plot. Though when I got this guide, I easily grasped what was happening and was able to concentrate more on the themes and language etc which you have to comment on in exams. It is helpful and gives lots of hints and info into what you're supposed to be focusing on in the scenes. It gives you ideas and pushes you in the right direction if you are struggling. It even has a glossary to simplify meanings and words. A more thorough understanding can be made from Hamlet and in the end you'll wonder why you didn't get this sooner. For five pounds, it's worth it, if you get an 'a' in your exams.39

Brilliant!
I've tried a couple of other CD courses (including Linguaphone) and this one is by far the best. The CD is clear, each conversation is repeated 3 times, they give you tips along the way and unlike other CDs, they tell you what each individual word in the sentence means as they go, which is really helpful for the next time you hear them. Each conversation is also included in a booklet, which is really useful for learning the spellings.

If you want to learn some basic Spanish conversation for a holiday or course i really recommend this CD!
