"Compassion is what connects all things"
This is another of those books that needs to be read from beginning to end... diving in and looking at the"interesting bits" (using the index) will not do the book justice.

There is much in this world that we do not understand... and probably never will... but we are getting there.

Books such as"The Divine Matrix" and"Secrets of the Lost Mode of Prayer" lead us to understand that we are all connected (irrespective of religious or cultural background)... and that we have much to learn from each other.
23

Good core messages, watch out for that corn!
A good book with good core messages. These messages are generally about how to motivate a team to create a high performace team. The book contains various easy to implement ideas about getting more performance from your team. The book is written in a storybook style rather than textboook style, making it very easy (and quick) to read. The book is corny in places. Many people you work with each day will have read this book - only by reading it yourself will you be able to understand what they are talking about when they talk about the book.26

A Bad MIx of Some Great Works
As one other reviewer, I bought this book because I liked the title. But that is where the similarity of our reviews ends.

The book is strange in the way the story develops, and the aide memoires used by Sharma are bizarre in the extreme. While I recognise the sense in providing some life lessons in stroy format, it does not gel well, and has a lot of mixed messages in the delivery (e.g. Julian Mantle (the monk) advocates the seeking of a simple life free from materialism, but then says that the techniques can be used to acumulate wealth, and material possessions.)

It is a poor blend of Napoleon Hills"Think and Grow Rich" - a more preferrable read - and some Eastern Mysticism. I think a lot of the impact is lost in the unfeasibility of the monks in the himalayan hills (not to mention the ease with which Julian apparently finds them!). It is like a blend of red wine and a single malt. Work well on their own, but have little business being put together!

It is my habit to complete a book, but this has been turgid going, and frankly of little or no value.27

Beginning to 'Think Big'
This book is a guide for anyone who wants to succeed in life. Dr Schwartz explains the reasons for `thinking big' and follows this up with ways to succeed with your big plans. Think big, remove fear and prosper is the underlying message that comes across.

The style of writing makes for an enjoyable read. Dr Schwartz has a wonderful understanding of those eager to learn and backs up an entertaining and informative read with superb examples.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be keeping it for future reference. It is the ideal guide for those who aspire to succeed in life but need some pointers into the right direction. A lot of the information reported might appear to be common sense. There is a lot more that is not. It is this attention to detail that will enable you to succeed where others have not. Enjoy this book.
28

Velvet Elvis - Don't Panic!
I have read through some of the previous reviews and been struck by the sense of alarm, and at times, panic induced by reading this book.
What concerns me most about that, is that it indicates that as a church (in the widest possible sense) we seem to have forgotten the art, nay the responsibility of studying, questionning and debating our beliefs.
It seems over the course of time we have been taught to simply accept whatever we are taught from the pulpit, without necessarily chewing it over a great deal. We simply swallow it wholesale. Literally. And without question.
I think a mark of maturity in a Christian is being able to reflect on new/very old ideas and perspectives, without feeling threatened or defensive.
Bell takes a look at some common and less common aspects of the Christian faith and puts them under the spotlight, asking some searching questions. I found the book to be exciting, challenging and thought-provoking.

Please, let's not turn off our God-given intellect when we walk into church and sit down.Let us instead ENGAGE with the issues facing the church and the society with which we are inextricably linked. Let us debate and discuss, and perhaps be brave enough to admit that sometimes our nice 'pat' answers aren't always enough.

If we can dare to be real and honest enough with our non-christian friends and workmates, so that they can see we are normal people, who have faith, rather than perfect, pious, 'untouchables', then perhaps Jesus might just become a little more accessible, and little less far away?30

Dream Big...Dream Without Fear
After watching Randy's lecture called"Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" on YouTube I was blown away by his honesty, clarity and forthrightness in conveying life lessons he has discovered. And soon after I ordered this book which is the written version of that humorous and inspiring lecture.

One of the ideas in his book is what Randy calls"head fake" where you learn an important lesson in an indirect way. I was reminded of my parents sending me out to my many childhood softball, tennis, skiing or golf lessons. At the time thinking I was just learning the skill sets of these sports but really learning so many other skills that have and continue to carry me through my achievements and successes. Those lessons instilled in me a deep impression of responsibility, commitment, knowing I make a difference and the importance of having play time and fun in my life. I so appreciate my parents unwavering commitment to me and my siblings in supporting us in our sporting life lesson adventures.

If you found Randy's book inspiring, I highly recommend checking out any one or all of Ariel and Shya Kane's books,"Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: A Book About Instantaneous Transformation,""Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment" or"How To Create a Magical Relationship." Each of the Kane's books have the idea of"Instantaneous Transformation" woven through the stories and ideas presented. Where through Instantaneous Transformation an ordinary mundane life can transform into a brilliant life adventure without work or effort.

Want to know more or curious about living the best life possible? Then go ahead and read either one or all of these incredibly inspiring books that can guide you in achieving your own dream life.33

Recovering a deeper understanding of the Christian hope
What are we waiting for? And what are we going to do about it in the meantime? These are the big questions Tom Wright asks right at the start of this wide-ranging examination of the classic Christian concept of hope. Characteristically thorough, but nevertheless crystal-clear throughout, Wright's book takes a critical look at an idea that, for Christians as much as for anyone else, has become rather `fuzzy'.

But if you thought Christian hope was simply a matter of clocking into heaven when you die (perhaps after a period of dutiful post-death `journeying' - the idea of purgatory being very much in vogue, it seems), Wright may make you think again. Master of the pithy phrase, he draws the reader's attention to"life after `life after death`" - for the ultimate reality is a new heaven and a new earth. And that has massive implications for our lives now: it means we are not `restoring a great painting that's shortly going to be thrown on the fire', or planting roses in a garden about to be bulldozed: what we do now matters for all time and eternity. So we need to take this earth - its beauties, our bodies, justice, God's rule - with the utmost seriousness. And celebrate the person and the event that give it all value and undergird its hope - Jesus and his resurrection. In one of my favourite passages, Wright urges us to celebrate Easter right through to ascension, using the time to take up something new that might help us `wake up in a whole new way' - give us `a sniff of new possibilities, new hopes, new ventures' - and in doing so bring something of the real meaning of Easter.

The author's exploration of our future hope is carefully grounded in an analysis of what the resurrection meant for early Christians, and how they understood the future of hope - so much more than `heaven when you die'. All this, and a quick tour of (a Wright understanding of) heaven, hell, purgatory and the real meaning of the `rapture'.

`Surprised by hope' is a richly rewarding read - though not without its faults. Wright has much to say about the importance of the created order being redeemed and renewed, but he doesn't give many clear pointers as to what that might mean for us now, or refer us to the growing theological literature that does so. And though his stated aim is to set out some practical ways hope can come alive for individuals or communities that lack it, he concentrates less on the practicalities than on digging some really solid foundations from which they can rise. But these are minor blemishes. What endures from the book? A clear call to build for the kingdom - a job of work that draws on a hope for the present and the future, grounded in a past event of eternal importance. Time to stretch that canvas on a new frame, and bed those roses in...
34

Short, but so is a 1" Punch to the Gut
I did not realise how quick a read this would be: I read the whole thing in an evening!
Harris' writing style relentlessly smashes misconceptions about atheism while at the same time exposing the great fallacies of organised religion. It is lean and intelligent, never apologetic, and always relevant. I can't attest to its effectiveness as a catalyst for critical thought in the mind of a religious person, but I imagine it would give them something to think about. I imagine that the main problem is getting a believer to read it in the first place, although due to its size it is far more accessible than the God Delusion.

36

A very powerful code to live by
Anyone brousing this review who's considering buying this book; I'd ask the following of you;

Imagine that you have permission to be happy and really enjoy your life - that your life is free of internal conflict within yourself and that created by others?

Imagine living your life without the fear of being judged by others? - that you know longer behave fearing how others might judge you?

Imagine letting go of any judgments you have about others and being able to forgive and not feeling the need to be right or make anyone else wrong?

Imagine you no longer fear being rejected and that you no longer have a compulsion to be accepted?

Imagine living without the fear of being loved or the need to be loved?

Imagine loving yourself for just the way you are without the need to live your life through someone else's eyes?

These are the fundamental questions this wonderful book answers via The Four Agreements.

Its a simple yet very profound read as it opens up our thinking and makes us realise how much energy we use and stress we take on in trying to live our lives under the burdons of social conditioning. It makes the point so clearly that its not what happens around us that counts, its how we choose to set our lives up and to live that matters.

Why should we choose to be victims in our own minds and carry around the weight of regret, hoplessness, envy or fear? Why should we shape our actions to constantly get the approval of others? - many who we have never even previously met?

This book has the answers. It makes the point that we aren't afraid to die but we are afraid to live and express ourselves. Its simple and it really drives the point home that we cannot continue to dwell in the past or to live in the future. We must live in the 'Now'

37

Absolutely worth it!
I was quite sceptical when I was first told to read this book because I have read other books on cognitive therapy and I had been bitterly disappointed but this book changed things for me. I also found that how I felt was completely normal at the time because I still get the same reaction from others to whom I recommend this book. All one has to do is to be really open to change and the suggestions and advice in this book can definitely change one's life for the better. It is not easy to leave old habits behind and to learn new ones and I often wondered, whilst reading it, if I could be bothered with this life long task. Because remember, it IS a life long task. It is a journey that you have to embark on to change years and years of ingrained thinking patterns which is ever so hard to, first, get your head around and then secondly, to actually action. But please try it and do not despair because with the help of this wonderful book everyone can obtain the ability to break free from life traps that prevent us from living a psychologically better life, becoming more self-aware and altogther calmer and more in control. I really suggest that you take the chance! You will thank me for it later...38

Brilliant & Compassionate Read
I have to admit that I am a bit of a fan of Pema Chodron, having heard her audiobooks"How to Meditate","Pure Meditation" and"True Happiness". I like her down-to-earth, yet wise and compassionate style. This is the first book I have read of Pema's and it is beautiful. It took me a while to get into it, and I enjoyed the last 7 chapters the most especially the"Sending & Taking" chapter on Tonglen practice, the chapter called"Not preferring Samsara to Nirvana" which spoke a little about ego involvement, and finally the chapter"Sticking to One Boat" which has inspired me to buy Trungpa's"Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism". 10 years before coming across Pema's beautiful teachings I got involved with A.Cohen's ego-inflated,neurotic nonsense and it seriously put me off all spiritual paths for a very long time. Pema Chodron is a breath of fresh, spring air.40

Business Consultant
Stephen R Covey's book helped me to understand that I am the one who must declare success into my life. I need to choose to be different and therefore act differently in order to acquire success. Our purpose and our direction are found when we decide to improve the way we do life. Who we are is more important than what we do. You will be thrilled with the improved output in your life when you change on the inside. Get ready for your mission, see the big picture, don't hesitate to move towards your dream and do it with integrity and an understanding of how others see life. Every day choose to make a difference and you will be amazed at the"who" you have become. This book taught me that leaders are readers and that I have to choose to grow. If it is to be THEN it is up to me. This is the book that changed my business life, my self belief and financial state forever.
