The Last Lecture Review
Honestly, one of the best books I've read. Randy Paush not only has something unique and important to say, but the way he has chosen to say it is amazing. I'd rank this book, inspirationally, with THE POWER OF NOW and TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE. <br /><br />Here's the idea of the book: Non-fiction, it is the account of Pausch's"last lecture" which he gave at Carnegie Mellon. Pausch was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given a few months to live so he decides to make some changes in his life--quit his job, be with his family. The title comes from the idea that at Carnegie Mellon, retiring professors are aked to give a"last lecture." So the title is ironic and a play on words in a sense. <br /><br />While the lecture is for everyone, Pausch really did this for his kids, who were too young at the time to know what was going on. It is so inspirational and its basic premise is that we should get all we can out of life now. I also enjoyed LIFE BEYOND MEASURE: LETTERS TO MY GREAT-GRANDDAUGHTER which is somewhat along the same lines as THE LAST LECTURE in that it was what Poitier wanted to leave behind to his great-grandaughter who is too young to really understand things right now. <br /><br />If you're looking for an inspirational book, and one that will keep you up at night thinking about how to live your life, THE LAST LECTURE is the non-fiction pick for you.

Review:
Fully functional though slightly lacking
This was my first taste of Jon Kabat-Zinn, though I've studied mindfulness before. As a general introduction to the subject it is fine. Jon is a gentle and engaging speaker, and on the first CD gives you a thoughtful, basic understanding of mindfulness. There are several meditations (as mentioned) on the second CD, which are also basic, but clear and helpful.<br /><br />I liked his presentation and have ordered his 'Full Catastrophe Living' as a result of listening to these CDs. I would, however, reccomend this set as an aid, rather than as a proper introduction. It is a very nice addition, if you are interested in stress reduction and/or mindfulness, and can help both to clarify understanding of the system and fine tune your meditation technique. If you are looking for a thorough introduction to the subject though, I would reccomend the book 'Mindfulness in Plain English' by Bhante G. For around the same price, you get a much more thorough understanding.

The Ultimate Guide to Cosmic Ordering - Empower Your Destiny: Take Control of Your Life (Book & CD)

New Price: £8.99

Review:
Brilliant CD. Brilliant Book. Comprehensive & Effective
Excellent quality. The bundled audio CD is so powerful it should be sold as a separate product. The book is the definitive guide to cosmic-ordering. Simple as that.<br /><br />I've been reading a lot recently. I guess everybody goes through a stage where they are asking questions about life and looking for answers. I read The Secret by Rhonda Byrne which introduced me to the law of attraction, which is a philosophy/understanding of the laws and powers of the universe. It's a brilliant little book that helped me to see that there is so much more to life. The ultimate guide to cosmic-ordering is a practical guide that shows you how to 'talk' to the cosmos, to focus on your desires, and take action to make all your dreams come true. It makes some profound points and will have you naval-gazing at your own flaws and idiosyncrasies so that you refocus your energy on what's important to you. It is obvious the book was written with heartfelt conviction, and in this regard stands head and shoulders above other books in the genre. My only criticism is that I whizzed through the whole book in one day, but such is the way with writing that enraptures. Unlike a novel which you read once and put away I found myself dipping in to it and re-reading sections daily. The audio CD is a revelation. As a man I did find the concept of how to make an 'order' challenging but the CD sets the whole process up, showing you how to make the cosmic connection which I find to be a very spiritual process. It also contains a hypnotic elements that have been imbedded to inspire you be more proactive, and I find myself using it at least once a week. The whole process of cosmic-ordering has been a brilliant success for me and my life. My feet are always grounded but the ultimate guide to cosmic-ordering package has given me the tools to help myself. So many areas of my life are improving. I have a more positive outlook as I am always looking at what I can do, not what I can't do. This stronger, optimistic, attitude has given me emotional energy. In life there is so much to celebrate. I feel blessed for having read this book.

New Way of Outlining Your Thoughts
Mind-mapping falls within the larger category of techniques for organizing your thoughts. There are schools of web or blob thinking and other nonlinear forms of organizing material, and this book is clear, concise and well-presented, although I'm a little unclear if it's for parents or for parents to read with their kids. Worth trying if you're not a"Type A" personality. I just finished"I Sleep At Red Lights: A True Story of Life After Triplets," by Bruce Stockler, a gift from my husband, and am passing it along to all my friends--a wonderful, vibrant, funny and compassionate memoir about family life.

Couldn't put this one down - a gobsmacking read
Having heard Carolyn Jessop on Radio 4 earlier this year I was intrigued to read her book. This is not one of the run of the mill battered wife books - far from it. What shines through is the bravery and courage of one woman who in the face of seemingly insummountable odds, continued to fight for her life and those of her children too - she never gave up - never. It is also an honest insight into a way of life so far removed from modern day America. One of those books I couldn't put down, totally captivating. I hope that some of the women currently dealing with the challenges at the YFZ ranch in Texas have the courage to read her words and follow her lead to a better life. And, I hope this makes the American authorities sit up and do more to help the victims of this awful regime.

The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason

Review:
Hard hitting religious polemic
Incredibly 120 Million Americans (who claim to be Biblical literalists) believe creation was 2,500 years after the Babylonians and Sumerians learned to brew beer. In this book, Harris argues daftness has a dark side; unquestioned religious faith causes some major problems.<br /><br />A quick glance of the globe and one can easily correlate two competiting religions co-located and needless bloodshed:<br />Palestine: Jews v. Muslims<br />Balkans: Orthodox v. Catholics v. Muslims<br />Northern Ireland: Protestant v. Catholic<br />Kashmir: Muslims v. Hindus<br />Sudan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Muslims v. Christians<br /><br />Harris also points out that religious faith, by taking dogmatic and unquestionable moral positions can block Scientific progress. For example, stem cell research - the candle of hope for those afflicted with insufferable conditions. It really isn't fair that someone can spend their life in a wheelchair or suffer Alzheimer's when a breakthrough in stem cell research could change their life.<br /><br />However, some of his analysis is a bit one-eyed. For example in his analysis of Islam, he produces a range of statistics and surveys of Islamic countries which show them following a common thread of inhumane values. The problem is that he leaves out some of the more liberal Islamic countries, such as the U.A.E. and Malaysia. That said most of his points are well made, for example the insularity of the Arabic world is evident by the very low number of books translated into Arabic. In 2002 Spain was translating about the same number of books into Spanish in a single year as the entire Arabic world had translated into Arabic since the 9th century!<br /><br />His writing style is methodical, surgical and logical. He coats that with the occasional dabble of dry, sardonic humour. For example, if the Bible is the word of God, how come Shakespear's writing is of a higher literacy standard? Or why did God creates 250,000 species of bettles?<br /><br />It's a good book, but the hard line atheist angle won't win over most theists. There is the odd compliment to Religion. He does point out that the Muslim conquest of Spain meant that classical Greek texts were translated into Latin which eventually helped them find their way into the Renaissance. But overall, the standard theist will just feel they are being misrepresented and misunderstood. It's a hard hitting religious polemic, but it will more than likely just be read by those who already feel that a religious aversion.<br />

<br />Somehow I identified with all of the life-traps and so therapy beckons? The more I read the more any optimism I'd held began to evapourate. Hopefully though anyone who wishes to adopt the steps to change their lives has fewer schemas than I, even with one life-trap it would take grinding hard work to escape from it. However, nothing worthwhile came easy, so keep expectations low and success will come your way. An interesting view into our behaviours and their origins.

David Icke- has always been right.... here's why..
Wonder why we are no more unsafe from terrorism and outside threats?, the way the world is being managed by war mongerers and corrupt business and political figures that dont' even care of the lives they kill around the world for way of profit and self fullfillment?<br />David Icke has been exposing global conspiracies now for over 18 years, leaving a comfy position working for the tv corporations to give us- the unaware, unawaken public an idea of why our world is like it is today.<br />From the genetic interbreeding of royal and high political figures to keep them the most secretive and loyal (to themselves and there interests) cabal, to explaining what must be done in way of exposing these elitist criminals, David has written over 600 pages for you to get an idea from. I just wish everyone could realize they need to pull themselves away from the hypnotic tv garbage and read the real news into what David has been talking about (to sell out shows of over 2500 people, all around the world) all this time. He is sincere,he is extremely intelligent, he is no"nut" and if you are ignorant enough to only know David from a clip on a degrading tv show, then you are cheating yourselves.<br />This is my honest experienced view.

Short. Sharp. Brilliant. Devastating.
It is sometimes said that the pen is the sharpest of weapons when used correctly. In no book I have read has this been more true. This book is a mere 90 very small pages, even slow readers will make it through in a couple of hours, and the arguments are completely devastating all the way through, I was an out-an-out atheist before reading it, and I've always been so, but this book makes the points so well that I almost felt sorry for any true believers reading it, they must be crying when they finish this, but if so, it should be tears of joy and understanding.<br /><br />Challenge every believer you know to read this book.

The quality of the recording is astounding (no background hiss on the silent bits) and I will definitely buy more of his work - get it!

A Life Changing perspective on the Gospel of the Kingdom.
This book within one read has radically changed my perspective of Jesus’s ministry and ultimately along with the work of the Holy Spirit changed my life forever. The graceful and concise teaching contained within, backed by experiences has left me feeling encouraged, challenged and empowered.

This book begins to bring words to what many of us have read and believed for years without seeing it within our lives. Bill Johnson has been ministering for many years and is a fifth generation pastor. He articulates the point of bringing ’Heaven to Earth’ through this book in a unique and insightful way, inspiring us to do the same. I was fortunate enough to hear him teach from this book and The Supernatural Power of a Transformed Mind (his second book, also a must buy) in Brazil, on a Global Awakening mission trip in 2005 and it was incredible! Everyone was taking notes and I mean EVERYONE, nearly word for word!!!

A top book and a must have for study and as practical guide. The revelation that ’us, regular guys and girls’ can be used by God in supernatural ways, to bring heaven to earth is priceless and will aid you in fulfilling the potential God has within you for your life.

A must have along with his second book The Supernatural Power of a Transformed Mind.

Review:
superb book for health victims, you are in control, look at your past, a fascinating read
If you have phobias or physical health problems or psychological problems, some of them are likely to come from your past, but not jsut this 'body' past, but all your other 'bodily' pasts, all your eternal pasts. We are eternal, so consider all the baggage you bring with you into each new 'body' life and here is a book that really digs deep into this business. By accident Dr Weiss began healing a patient with numerous psychological problems, none of which could be explained by her current life, or childhood. By open mindedness anda joint journey, his patient and he discover an incredible insight into the past and learn to release these problems through remembering where they were born from. Not only that but to add to the proof, the patient became very psychic in the process and had the most accurate information. Start taking note of your dreams, they are all psychic, they are all messages to you and for you and from you. Read this and eternal life starts to make sense.

Mindfulness in Plain English

Review:
Mindfulness in real life
The theme of the book is Mindfulness: actually seeing what is there in front of us.<br /><br />Bhante's premise (which is difficult to ague with ) is that we see life through a screen of thoughts and concepts. As he puts it, we get so caught up in this endless thought-stream that reality flows by unnoticed.<br /><br />Meditation can sometimes seem daunting and mystical but its goal is to simply free us from not being aware of our lives as they unfold.<br /><br />Bhante's gift, which shines through every page of this book, is to break down some of the myths and make them real and practical.<br /><br />What is left is a remarkably lucid, accessible and sensible account of how mindfulness meditation (in the Vipassana tradition - though that detail isn't important) can literally chance your life: your reactions, your perception, your ability to life for the moment.<br /><br />There is no hint of high-mindedness in his tone, which is grounded, realistic, and thoroughly human.<br /><br />Consider this, from page one:"There you are, and you suddenly realise that you are spending your whole life just barely getting by. You keep up a good front. You manage to make ends meet somehow and look okay from the outside.<br /><br />"But those periods of desperation, those times when you feel everything caving in on you - you keep those to yourself. You are a mess, and you know it.<br /><br />"Meanwhile, way down under all of that, you just know that there has to be some other way to live, a better way to look at the world, a way to touch life more fully.... life is an emotional roller coaster, and you spend a lot of your time down at the bottom of the ramp, yearning for heights."<br /><br />So what's wrong with you, Bhante asks? You are simply human, battling with all the usual human hallmarks of jealousy, suffering, discontent and stress.<br /><br />Meditation isn't a quick-fix solution to the human condition, he says. In this age of instant gratification, this can be a hard pill to swallow.<br /><br />"But what it does do is teach you to watch the functioning of your own mind in a calm and detached manner so you can gain insight into your own behaviour. The goal is awareness."<br /><br />With a good deal of patience and commitment, meditation can simply teach you to stand aside from your own thought processes and not get involved.<br /><br />Step by step, it will become clear that agitation is actually a superficial mental stage. It comes and goes, he says, and has no real grip on you at all.<br /><br />There are so many pearls of hope and wisdom in this bok, but I particularly like this one, for its searing truth and humanity. Bhante writes:<br /><br />"Somewhere in this process, you will come face to face with the sudden and shocking realisation that you are completely crazy. Your mind is a shrieking, gibbering madhouse, utterly out of control and helpless.<br /><br />"No problem. You are not crazier than you were yesterday. It has always been this way, and you just never noticed. You are no crazier than everybody else around you.<br /><br />The only real difference is that you have confronted the situation and they have not."<br /><br />This review is taken from a blog from www.yoga-abode.com

A very depressing, very funny, truly enlightening read. This book has taken away all the fear, dread and nonsense I have been fed all my life and made me see how utterly crazy this world is. More than just a scientific genius...
Albert Einstein will always be remembered as one of the great minds of our time. But not too many people think of him as a great societal thinker as well. Albert delves into many touchy subjects in this book (having grown up during the most devastating era mankind has ever known).

The one downside to this book is that there are a few (only a few) passages where you really don't know who he is talking to, and little reference is given on these to help you, the reader, figure them out.

I was thoroughly impressed that this genius, mental marvel of the 20th century could convey his message so clearly in most of the essays and writings. He talks about religion, minorities, war, and other issues facing humaity today that are highly debated in all circles.

A good buy, a great mind.

simply wonderful!
CS Lewis shines in this book. He has the extraordinary ability to see into the heart of things and to provide simple answers to complex questions concerning christianity and humanity. Like the desert fathers, he shows considerable understanding of the human psyche and on every page, demonstrates his extraordinary humanity. I laughed in a deep and hearty way (and with joy) at some of his thoughts. Well done Mr Lewis; I hope and pray that you see the good Lord face to face!

"D" Book of Life
Gibran's poetic account of the Prophet is the ultimate guide to a fulfilling life. It has the rare power of pulling anyone out of a deadlock, a situation so enthralling that no solution seems to be worthwile. It has the literary sweetness of the Middle East, lucid yet enlightening.<br /><br />The Prophet - a wise man we find in every religion - discerns knowledge on the most essential particles of life, Children and Marriage, Passion and Love, Life and Death. It succeeds to succumb a human soul to inner peace, aming to effortlessly make a reader feel better, be better and exert betterness. <br /><br />Perhaps, besides absolutely recommending everyone to get a copy of this masterpiece, I'd only add one thing. Do get a hard cover copy of this book as you'll most certainly come back to it over and over again.
