The Bike Book

Review:
A Useful Book
This is a useful book that tries to make bicycle maintenance easy. Nicely coloured diagrams and very useful checklists, together with an indication of the difficulty of the task helps the reader. I found that not all the terms were explained when they were first used. This meant reading on, aware that you didn't know what exactly was being discussed, until the term became clear later. This was a really strange feeling, and reduced the effectiveness of the book for me. That aside, there is still some value in the suggested routines and the tables indicating the tools and skill required in order to carry out a certain task.

Parallel Worlds: The Science of Alternative Universes and Our Future in the Cosmos

Our Price: £6.99
Used Price: £3.65
New Price: £4.56

Review:
The Humanity's Exit Strategy
Michio Kaku's"Parallel Worlds" is the best popular science non-fiction ever written. Its breakthrough theories reach out to the most naive reader with such a strength that whatever you've known about the Big Bang or religious essays on the beginning and the end of our world, suddenly becomes a tiny moment caught in the universe yet ever-evolving.<br /><br />It has very logical structure on complex issues such as the essence of non-material dark energy that apparently consists the 73 percent of the energy in our universe, the bubble theories of the existence of parallel universes where the humanity can move to as our planet comes to an end due to the unavoidable universal freeze. Thus, he masterfully presents the idea of multiverses that co-exist in a string, subject to ongoing Big Bangs here and there. As he narrates"...entire universes continually sprout or"bud" off other universes. If true, it would unify two of the great religious mythologies, Genesis and Nirvana. Genesis would take place continually within the fabric of timeless Nirvana".<br /><br />(One has another appreciation for Michio Kaku for his bringing up in a Buddhist family who nevertheless sent him off to a Catholic Sunday School had made him one of the most read scientists.)<br /><br />Decoding Einstein's and Darwin's at their time distant theories on reading"the God's Mind" and the"end of humanity", Michio Kaku unveils the latest developments in the scientific world on the humanity's beginning and future, claiming that even a string of Big Bangs and multiverses would still need an ultimate creator/composer...<br /><br />This book is a definite buy on the most indefinite questions we have.

Horror Stories !!
With friends like that, who needs enemies. Before reading this book, I was blissfully unaware of my impending changes from human to monster as Vicki describes. Now I find myself not wanting to go through the whole nine(ten) months of hell (although it's too late for that!).<br /><br />The book provides some interesting reading and does prepare you but in the worst possible way. I've got to go a buy another book, to make me and my"little ricicle" feel better about the HAPPY TIMES AHEAD.

A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes

Our Price: £6.20
Used Price: £1.90
New Price: £3.58

Review:
A book that leaves you in awe
A book that sold millions of copies and one wonders how many people read it and of those, how many actually understood it all. I have a scientific education (chemistry), but I frankly admit I did not get it all. It is difficult to explain what is in the book, but is in essence about where we came from and what we are heading to with regard to the universe, time, space and matter. The book is very well written, with a sense of humor and trying to explain the nearly inexplicable to the layman; I could follow large chunks of the text, but sometimes it is just too difficult to comprehend. This made me think: is Stephen Hawking's disadvantage (being locked up in his own body) also his disadvantage? He probably has more time than most people to turn into himself and contemplate on such extremely complex items as black holes, wormholes and the (in)finity of the universe. A book that leaves you in awe.

Clearly and concisely written this book puts forward a number of extremely interesting arguments surrounding various topics in medical ethics. The Toyota Way: 14 Management Principles from the World's Greatest Manufacturer

Our Price: £8.49
Used Price: £7.04
New Price: £7.98

Review:
THE book on the Toyota Production System!
Everyone in the auto industry is familiar with Toyota's dramatic business success and, of course, consumers are demonstrably aware of the company's world-renowned quality. In fact, Toyota has done so well that, as Liker points out, many consider the company to be"boring." For, after all, steadily growing sales, consistent profitability, huge cash reserves, operational efficiency (combined with constant innovation--not an easy complement to pull off), and top quality, year after year, are not the stuff of breaking news. But, despite this reputation as the best manufacturer in the world, and despite the huge influence of the lean movement, most attempts to emulate and implement lean production have been fairly superficial, with less than stellar results over the long term."Dabbling at one level--the `Process' level," U.S. companies have embraced lean tools, but do not understand what makes them work together in a system.<br /><br />This integration is precisely what The Toyota Way examines, explaining how to create a Toyota-style culture of quality, lean, and learning that takes quantum leaps beyond any superficial focus on tools and techniques. Suffice it to say, there are hundreds of books out there explaining, analyzing, and advocating lean--providing details and insight into the tools and methods of TPS. The two most noted among this treasure trove are, of course, the contributions of The Machine That Changed the World (Womack, Jones, Roos, 1991) and Lean Thinking (Womack and Jones, 1996), and both stand as excellent resources on the subject. The first introduced the world to the tools and techniques of lean manufacturing by extracting its principles from their initial Japanese application and examining them in detail. And, the second explained how"to make value flow smoothly at the pull of the customer in pursuit of perfection."<br /><br />The Toyota Way is, however (according to Liker), the first business book in English to provide a blueprint of Toyota's management philosophy for general business readers, dispelling the misconceptions that TPS is merely a collection of tools that lead to more efficient operations. Of course, there is no way of ascertaining the validity of this claim, without an extensive and time consuming exploration of the literature, but that truly doesn't matter. The Toyota Way is an approach of such breadth, depth, and significance to the world of business that it has yet to be fully understood; thus, the subject has not yet been fully exhausted. Liker's keen sense of the subtleties of TPS intrepidly challenges conventional understanding and transforms it with eloquent simplicity. He takes the reader deeply and comprehensively into the"heart and intelligence" of Toyota's"way," giving businesses in diverse industries some very practical and effective ideas that they can use to develop their own unique approach to TPS.

'So just tell me why is snot green?!
I bought this book today and I've got to tell you I just could not put it down! Believe it or not it is not boring! Kids and even adults will get a lot of fun out of this book. Every page is filled with cool questions and fascinating answers e.g. Will we be able to travel back in time? Will people have flying cars? Why is snot green? Find out all the answers in this book. You get lots of answers to the same question to help you understand more about the topic e.g. Why is the sky blue? (answer) Eh? Wait a minute - I thought air was invisible... (answer) and so on! It seems like the book will never end and that's a good thing! Anyway this is a great book and it is well worth the money. Buy it! You won't regret it!<br /><br />

Dull with a precious few funny moments
There are a few comic episodes here but not enough unfortunately to leaven the mediocrity of the rest. I found this to be a superficial read and one which tries a little too hard to be PC. I feel I was misled by some of the other reviews on this page which are rather suspiciously unbalanced for such a unremarkable book.<br /><br />If you want a real picture of life as a junior doctor, read Michael Foxton's"Bedside Stories."<br /><br />

Friend and doctor in one
I consider myself really lucky to have found this book. I found it in the depths of confusion and despair and it has been my crutch and my reassurance throughout my own nervous breakdown. Dr Weekes explains the strange feelings and gives practical advice on how to turn it around, and she does all this with encouragement and optimism, both of which are lacking in a breakdown. If I have ever lost hope, I just read the relevant bit of the book again and dared to dream. I have no doubt that things will be well and that is down to this book. It is completely invaluable to anybody in any state of anxiety and I cannot recommend it enough.

Great food, low calories and low fat
Fab book for anyone trying to lose weight. Shows that it doesn't have to be all cottage cheese and Ry-vitas! I have lost over two and a half stones in 14 weeks on the Rosemary Conley diet and would recommend it to everyone. The recipes are easy and not too expensive or time-consuming, and they taste really great. I am a total Rosemary C convert. (I joined a Rosemary Conley class and I do aerobic exercise as well, so bear in mind that it is not just the diet.) Buy her books, buy her DVDs or best of all join the classes and finally get that excess weight off. I promise you real results if you follow the guidance.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to do well in their UKCAT.
