Review:
The Bridge Between Biology, Quantum Reality, and YOU.
I'd put this book up there with Pert's"Molecules of Emotion", various of Chopra, and others based less on the esoteric nature of things, but more on scientific fact.

The book shows that there *is* another way to look at things, rather than just accepting blindly the [scientific] dogmas of our predecessors. If you're looking for that link between science and spirituality, then start here.

The book takes the reader on an exciting journey of discovery and revelation, challenging long-held beliefs on certain aspects of Biology and Physics, to arrive at a radically new and different explanations for how our DNA - and ultimately our very being - happen to be.

The author has taken a few knocks in life - as have most of us - and this comes through in the writing. However, those 'knocks' have clearly realigned his traditional academic conditioning and outlook on to a course of independent, pure creativity within his area of expertise, without the constraints of academic funding or peer-review looking over his shoulder all the time. Spending time in the Caribbean obviously gave him this break, and while other academics would probably look down on this judgmentally as a retro-step, it provided the fertile ground for this type of change to take place.

The book gave me the Biology 101 overview that I so desperately needed. As a physicist, I was able to fill-in the blanks when it came to the Quantum Mechanics side. As a spritualist, it all made such wonderful sense when the two came together.

Fantastic, A-1, thanks for such a great read.

Excellent Pocket Bird Book
This book contains all the usual information that a good quality book on birds should carry within its pages. It covers 170 of the most commonly found birds in Britain and Ireland in a well laid out and easy to follow format. The illustrations by David Nurney are excellent and many bird enthusiasts prefer illustrations to photographs. For identification purposes they are first class.

This book features a bird per page and has all the usual features including descriptions of each bird's main characteristics including distribution of each species. The bird's plumage and behaviour patterns. RSPB books seem to go that extra mile with the information they provide the enthusiast.

Life changing
It’s not often I read a book and think it has actually changed my life, but that’s exactly what I thought with this one. It gave me completely new insights into the behaviour and feelings of myself and those around me. I read it as part of a counselling course, but since it is so readable I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Review:
Excellent guide to domestic installations
For a non-electrician, at first sight this book is quite impenetrable, being a set of tables, diagrams, and specialised notation (Zs,In,R1...) that makes little sense until you understand the language. However, when you delve deeper, and read individual sections, the language begins to make sense. If you already know how to wire a fused connection unit and are willing to learn more, then this will take you to a *reasonable* (albeit not comprehensive) understanding of how a domestic system works, and the requirements of BS7671.

Particular sections of interest are the diagrams on earthing systems, how to use specialised test equipment and how to downrate cable for use in conduit, insulation, or other current limiting situations. There are plenty of diagrams to illustrate different situations.

This isn’t, as said before, a comprehensive guide, and it does require supplementary knowledge acquired from experience/other reading, but as a handy reference for design and test, it is invaluable. A great on site guide.

Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5 Billion-Year History of the Human Body

Review:
a truly great book!
(from my amazon.com review)

This is the most enjoyable book I've read on evolution since Gould's fine Wonderful Life. Shubin not only combines great skills in paleontology and anatomy with an insatiable curiosity, but he also has a rare gift at writing as well. The book looks at aspects of human anatomy and senses--hands, smell, hearing, vision, etc--and traces them back--way back! Some of this, of course, has been done before, but Shubin writes with a flair, a clarity, and a precision that brings it all into a new focus. There is also an emphasis on DNA, in particular recent DNA experiments that combined with the paleontology and anatomy makes a very compelling case.

Shubin starts off with the search for a link between fish and land animals that took him to the Canadian Arctic and culminated in the discovery of Tiktaalik--a fish with a flattened head and flippers that made it look rather like a very primitive alligator in ways. The author then shows the evolution of necks and limbs. He does the same with some of the organs such as smell and vision, and shows their evolution as well.

The book is perhaps at its best in its discussion of the role of DNA in evolution. It is now known that it is possible to turn on a gene that is responsible for the development of an eye, for example. So you can create a fruitfly with an eye almost anywhere you want--such as on a leg--and many of these are functional, although in a primitive way. But it gets even more interesting. Suppose you take a gene from a mouse that controls the development of an eye, and implant it into a fruitfly, what happens? You get a fruitfly eye, not a mouse eye. This says a lot about the basic building blocks of life.

The book does have one major flaw. At 200 pages it's way too short! If the writing were dry or stiff, 200 pages would be sufficient, but with Shubin's thoroughly enjoyable writing and choice of subjects, I would have preferred 600 pages.
Dry Store Room No. 1: The Secret Life of the Natural History Museum

Our Price: £10.95
Used Price: £8.74
New Price: £10.74

Review:
Marvellous stuff.
Dry Store Room No.1 is a wonderful book that allows the reader an insight into the fascinating world of the Natural History Museum, London. In this book Mr Fortey tells us; not only about the exhibits, but also about the work behind them and the men and women who carried out this work. We learn about all sorts of things from the ghastly stenches of the pit where Whale carcasses are stripped of flesh to the curator who obsessively categorized everything including"string too short for further use".

The science parts can occasionally be a bit hard to understand but like another reviewer I see that as my lack of understanding not Mr Fortey's lack of clarity and besides what would life be if we didn't stretch ourselves once in a while.

I thoroughly recommend this for the sort of person who likes a behind the scenes look at life.

Living with a Willy

Our Price: £3.24
Used Price: £1.33
New Price: £1.23

Review:
A mums best freind (pardon the pun)
As a woman and a mother i only have third party experience of the vaguaries of the willy. I also realise that the last person a boy wants to ask about his willy is his mum. Some things are just beyond the pale. SO i found this book and what a gem it is. The Boys are 9 and nearly 11. My husband vetted it first because i thought he'd have a better idea of what would be needed in the way of an owners manual being an owner himself. He spent two nights sniggering and giggling and then said it was perfect. Especially for the older boy. We think that the younger boy may just find some of it gross but children tend to read or listen to as much as they can handle then switch off. It is written in a non medical fashion but without any silly inaccuracies that may cause problems later. It also covers related areas such as hygene, the ettiquette of early physical relations with girls, kissing and mutual respect but in a relaxed inoffensive manner that a boy can understand and remember. I'll leave it on their bookshelf so they can dip into it as and when they need.

Great insight to the world of the BLACK DOG
The comments written by Stephen Fry, probably sums up this book better than i could ever put into words but this book i have found to be very practical not only for myself but my partner who is also my carer and friends who know me but didn't really understand what it is like to be a sufferer of depression, as the 12th page of the book says we are very good at concealing our illness and it is something that i have done for many years and mainly for the reasons quoted in this book, and i have great admiration for Matthew Johnstone for putting this book together and would happily recommend it to anyone who suffers and is living or in close contact with someone with depression to read it as it gives a very good insight to what having the BLACK DOG is all about.

On Becoming a Person

Our Price: £6.99
Used Price: £4.90
New Price: £5.05

Review:
A humble masterpiece
This book by Carl Rogers on client-centered therapy may lack the drama, the force or the cleverness associated with some books on other forms of psychotherapy. What it doesn't seem to lack is a quiet wisdom that flowed from Rogers' many years of experience and sensitivity to his patients.

Despite some redundancy, being a collection of papers and presentations from Rogers over many years,"On Becoming A Person":

1) presents a branch of psychotherapy distinct from psychoanalysis and learning theories as well as from behaviorism, focused more on basically well people growing than on helping disturbed people get better.

2) is rooted in Roger's positive view of human nature as basically good and constructive, as he discovered in encounters with his patients. Roger's emphasis on empathic understanding, on not imposing theoretical speculations about the clients state of mind and on avoiding forceful interference would seem to avoid some of the abuses associated with some other psychotherapies.

3) presents ideas about the helping relationship that Rogers extended from psychotherapy into other areas such as education. Rogers's nondirective approach suggested to him the possibility of a progressive education free of examinations, of grades, of conclusions, and even of teachers.

4) despite its"fuzziness", Rogers does present some experimental evidence in favor of client-centered therapy as compared to those based on learning theory and behaviorism.

5) Rogers' shows appreciation of the growing power of the behavioral sciences but expresses concern less this science, like other sciences, becomes manipulated by politicians to the detriment of people. He basically wonders, if a culture is to be designed, as Skinner had suggested, what safeguards there are on the designer.

Rogers may seem too rosy and to be cherry-picking his results. The kind of measurements he presents, such as a psychological test measuring"changes in the self" based on self reporting may seem too fuzzy. How long it takes, compared to other available approaches, to get effective change seems not to have been a primary consideration for Rogers and may explain the rise of more recent approaches like Cognitive Therapy and Constructive Living. As a lay person, I respect the humane treatment Rogers recommended toward those entering psychotherapy as clients.

A major contribution by Rogers seems to be his recognition that his clients were not objects to do things to but rather fellow people whose experience he could share in.

I have seen various muscle books that were ok, including Paul Blakey’s and Stone’s Atlas, but when I found this one I realised that it was what I had been looking for. It is clear, concise and I liked the additional advice on stretching and stenthening. The pictures show exactly the origin and insertion and give extra information such as basic functional movement and sports which commonly use the muscle. Essential if you plan to pass the C&G Exam
This book will never win a prize for literary content, but if you're going to get serious about Portable Appliance Testing it's this season's must have and it will get you through the C&G exam. Somewhat expensive (hence 4*s) - to be expected maybe? - electrical engineers are probably not best known for their writing skills so there must be a rarity premium. Tells you what you need to know and lots of stuff you don't - hardcore information and good for insomnia too. The Amazon combo deal including this title and"PAT - Portable Appliance Testing: In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment" by Brian Scaddan is excellent and gives you the only two documents you really need. Well worth the money.

V realistic view on today's NHS
I loved this book. It was the sort of book that is so accurate it is scary. I am not a doctor, but it reminded me of working in A+E as a radiographer many moons ago. I have never nodded in agreement and exclaimed"yes! that is really how it is!!" aloud when reading a book on the bus. I agree with the ideas that stem from the book such as the NHS being placed into the hands of the professionals and the patients that use it, and reducing the amount of Governmental control.
To those saying that the book is too political, well that is what it is like in today's NHS, too many targets, poor workforce planning etc is something that health professionals have to deal with on an everyday basis. Dr Edwards clearly loves the NHS for what it stands for, but his frustration with how it is managed is justified.
Excellent, but limited
It was an excellent book, accesible to readers of all ages and interests. Everything was well explained, such that it leaves the reader feeling proud to have understood such advanced areas of physics! However, the constant references to the simpsons gave a feeling of being talked down to, as if the reader would be too stupid to understand a physical concept if it werent explained by use of cartoons! Said referrences became more and more frequent to the point that one wondered whether the book was about the simpsons or about spacetime. I'll leave it to you to judge though, as i definitely think it a book worth reading.
