Review:
Not as good as Mystery Method
This book is ok i gues the tips is somewhat usefull, but Its not the 5 star book that so many describes. It is tips and methods mixed with the"evolution of a natural" which is boring bragging about"why i am better than anybody else at this" not worth reading. It still gets 3 stars as the other part is good written with humor, and the few illustrations are very good and explaining.
Chose MM over this.

Review:
A courageous effort - McClellan deserves every penny
We all knew that the reasons for us to enter into war with Iraq were based on falsehoods and lies, but now we have someone who has had the courage to prove we were right all along.

I disagree with people (including my own father-in-law) that Scott McClellan is a traitor. Yes, he is going to make millions from this book but so what? We, the public, deserve to have someone tell us the truth, and who better than the White House's own press secretary?

People who will not read this book (and I am talking about the republican religious right who put Bush into power) should not be allowed to have an opinion about it. Stop your obstinence and overcome your fears, and go read it! The truth will set you free.

Interesting easy read.
I'm only writing this because there seem to be a lot of negative reviews. I enjoyed it as holiday reading and recommended it to people I met. I more or less already new the economics so maybe I just liked hearing my own opinions being confirmed. It was a good purchase for me.

The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate (Relationships)

Review:
Love is a choice.
From a rich reduction of over twenty years as a marriage counselor, Gary Chapman shares ways that communication, either in speaking or behaviors, support or dissolve healthy marriages. One form of communication or"language" that Gary Chapman presents is called"Quality Time". Becoming aware of my need for this"quality time" helped me to rediscover passion and love for my husband of eight years. We both lead busy lives with many hobbies and interests; coming together at the end of the day and sharing has brought us closer. In giving one another our total attention our relationship and our individual sense of self worth has deepened to new levels.

In reading The Five Love Languages I was reminded of another incredible relationship book written by Ariel and Shya Kane called"How to Create a Magical Relationship". The Kanes' approach focuses on awareness and an ability to truly listen to one's partner. It too enriched my ability to spend"quality time" with the many people who matter. If you are looking for a richer deeper level in all your relationships, I highly recommend either of these insightful books.

Outstanding
This book is great! It's funny, artistic, intelligent, and emotionally harrowing (in places on the subject of third world hunger and war) all rolled into one. There isn't that much writing but I think this is a good thing as his work is brilliant and the minimalistic amount of text allows for reflection.

From the back cover:

"There's no way you're going to get a quote from us to use on your book cover" - Metropolitan Police Spokesman

Awesome and a good coffee table book/talking point as well.

My Nan think's he's ace!

Fantastic book, a must read!
A fascinating and extremely well written account of Thomas McFadden's incarceration in Bolivia's San Pedro prison. The stories of the inner workings of this prison are just incredible. It usually takes me weeks, or even months, to read a book (short attention span), but I became so engrossed in this book that I finished it in 3 just days.
Fantastic book! Highly recommended!

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking

Our Price: £5.99
Used Price: £0.99
New Price: £2.60

Review:
Too much psuedo science!
The brain and thought analysis are always interesting subjects. Gladwell uses quirky anecdotes to present his hypotheisis which is essentially that visceral or instinctive thinking can sometimes out perform rational analysis. Although some of the anecdotes are interesting and thought provoking (particularly the one on racism), I found the lack of scientifc methodolgy in his arguments extremly annoying. Something is either appropriate for scientific analysis or it is not. One would think thought and brain analysis fits perfectly into the scientific remit. But this book subsituites science with psuedo science. All too often anecdotes are used. But anyone can cherry pick anecdotes to argue anything, so what's the objective of this book? Is it a scientific hypotheisis or just some writer looking for a"wow".

I think the art of popular science writing is the ability to explain something complicated, in simple terms and thus bring something which is esoteric to the masses. There are many talented writed who can do exactly this: Richard Dawkins, Stephen Hawking or Robert Winston.

However, I am always a bit apprenhensive when a journalist with little or no scientific background enters the scientific paradigm. All too often, they substitute the scientific approach for the"wow wow wow" approach. By the end of this book, Gladwell didn't make change my mind.

Lesson from Nazi death camps for everyday life
I'm not a scientist by training and have often bought psychology books in the past only to be disappointed.

However Mr Frankls' book is amazing. It is effectively in two parts the first being about his experiences in a WWII concentration camp and the second being about his revolutionary theory of logotherapy. This theory which, very basically says that we should all strive to find meaning in our lives (meaning coming from within not imposed from without), is very convincing and has even assisted me in my daily life.

Would definitely recommend this book as although the context is WWII concentration camps there are lessons here for the twenty-first century Westerner.

The only reason I have given it 4 stars is because some of the psychological reasoning in the latter part of the book is at times difficult to follow.
The Definitive Book of Body Language: How to Read Others' Attitudes by Their Gestures

Our Price: £5.99
Used Price: £1.75
New Price: £3.73

Review:
Essential but not particularly enjoyable reading
According to recent studies, only 30% of all communication is verbal. The other 70% is made up of the non verbal signals and gestures that come from the rest of the body (in other words body language). Assuming this to be true, it's therefore important for anyone interested in communicating effectively to fully understand the implications of body language and learn how to use it to effectively interact with all types of people.

The Definitve Book Of Body Language by Allan and Barbara Pease is the international bestseller on the subject of body language and therefore a good place to start. The first 100 pages of the book are great and a journey of discovery into the the world of body language, with every page revealing something new. Many of the points made are logical and obvious if thought about hard enough but it is still fascinating to read how the way we use our body in everyday situations can be interpreted and ultimately influence the outcome of our interactions with others.

The book uses a number of real life examples to highlight the points it makes, some of which provide a shocking insight into events and situations of the past 10 years. One example that springs to mind and thta is regularly referred to in the book is that of Bill Clinton when he was going through the scandal of his affair with Monica Lewinski. The book manages to pin point various moments during that time where the body language of the former US president communicated a resounding"I did it".

After the first 100 pages the book becomes a little bit repetitive and was more of an obligation than a pleasure to finish. Nevertheless I would still recommend it to anyone interested in communicating effectively, whether it be to better manage business situations or to attract more women. During the two weeks I was reading the book I became very ware of both my own and other people's body language and a number of the lessons taught in the book I still use on a regular basis.
Review:
The dissertation that never was...
I am a Computer Science student, but originally I studied Communication. When I started my communication degree I knew I would write my dissertation on how the internet has affected communication, but I changed degree and instead built a facebook application. This book has taken my two big passions in life and combined them in a way that I continually attempt to, and in a much more eloquent style than I could ever achieve.
Clay continually uses examples that for anyone who uses web resources on a daily basis can relate to. He takes these examples and highlights not only the positives that they have generated, but their limitations too. His insight into what we previously believed to be technological implications shows us that indeed they are not technological, but human social limitations. Coupled with the depth of compassion towards humans, Clay continually reminds me that humans are essentially good but require the tools to be able to put that goodness into practice.
My favourite part is his comparison of the internet and web to the printing press pushing aside the scribes. I truly believe that we're watching the birth of a new cultural revolution, Clay sees it and the examples I have taken away from his writing allow me to show the changes to my friends and family that otherwise lay blind to it.
If you are even slightly interested in the web, communication, or modern culture then you must read this book. Thanks Clay for writing such an insightful and positive guide to this culture's birth.

Watching the English: The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour

Our Price: £6.74
Used Price: £3.45
New Price: £3.24

Review:
Unbearable
I have never been compelled to review anything before, but this really is utter dross and people need to be warned to steer clear of it, unless perhaps you enjoy a spot of casual bigotry, Daily Mail reading or similar activities.
A hideous mish-mash of 'pop anthropology' and aspiration to genuine academia is best summarised by a footnote which refers to a paper that the author herself wrote, which in the context of a supposed light read seems rather pretentious, except don't worry: 'the paper is 'alot less pompous than the title makes it sound'. Well thanks for that little disclaimer, I would now rush out and find it, were I not already totally convinced of your pomposity thanks to reading the rest of Watching the English.
The book is a supposed overview of English etiquette, habits and behaviour: it doesn't fail totally in this respect, except that most English people would realise it all already, and most foreigners would be put off by the length and needless detail.
But it is the tone of the book that is, as the review title says, unbearable. I would hate to meet this woman. I cannot believe that she would ever want to mix with the 'lower classes', as she repeatedly calls them. An undeniable tone of snootiness permeates every page, and if you scan through the pages to see how many times the word 'I' appears, as I did when I first realised what was putting me off, you shouldn't be surprised to learn that she really does think alot of herself, and her husband who graduated with a First from Oxford, as she wastes no time in telling us.
Please leave it on the shelf.

Outdoor Survival Handbook: A Guide To The Resources And Materials Available In The Wild And How To Use Them For Food, Shelter,Warmth And Navigation

Review:
Good introduction to outdoor survival
I liked the way the book was organised, into seasons highlighting the essentials e.g. fire, shelter etc.
The writing style is clear and easy to read, demonstrating Ray's obvious knowledge and love of nature.
As mentioned elsewhere, the illustrations are fairly basic, but I think sufficient to get the practical concepts across.
Blatantly promotes his own Woodlore equipment & bushcraft/survival courses!

Overall I would recommend the book as an introduction to outdoor survival.
