For the price this book is well worth the money. It is a reliable guide to survival in the great out doors. The ammount of knowledge I have accumalated from this small book is amazing. The author, John Wiseman of the SAS greats is enough to make you want to buy it.24

couldn't put this down!!
like the others i saw Bear on tv and thought heres someone with a good sense of humour and would make a brilliant uncle with his adventure stories, this book relates to much more than climbing Everest it could be paralleled to lifes struggles and your own personal Everest, what i took from it is that if you have the tenacity, determination and the burning desire to conquer something thats seems insurmountable it can be done, i liked Bears references to his faith (i am of no religion) but it struck me that if you have a belief it certainly will help get you through, good luck to him, this book left me wanting more Uncle Bears tales!!25

Got For XMas, what rubbish!
Each double page is like the center fold from the old Funday Times, full of useless 'factoids' out of context.
OK, i do admit that this book was never aimed at my age group (20+) but i would consider it a waste of brain space for any one younger who can't sort the useful information from the majority of junk.
Most of the content should be learnt in a social context, i.e. at clubs such as scouts rather than read by ones self.
Final point: all of the articles in the book are what i concider Final Summeries that leave the reader whithout any background or true understanding unless you have encountered them before.
Better Alternatives:
Something like the SAS survival guide
A Ray Mears book

Conclusion:
A present for some one you don't know(like) very well, that will be binned or sent to a car-boot in a couple of years.26

Ronnie O'Sullivan's Autobiography
This Book is one of the best Autobiography's I have read it is a compelling read and it never gets boring. It shows you how difficult his life was with his farther and being overweight and addicted to drugs, In this book he gets over all of his addictions and now is one of the best if not the Best Snooker player in the World. He has a frail relationship between him and his farther, they had there ups and there downs but they love each other and that is all that matters. This book shows how much pressure a world champion has. This is an excellent read and it is amazing considering how much hurt Ronnie went through to still become the best snooker player of all time.27

Essential Reading
This is one of those few perspective-changing books that you come across. I have been interested in weight-training, cardio activities and sports nutrition for a number of years, in the hope that I will improve my fitness levels and get leaner/more muscular. Up until reading this book I depended solely on magazines such as Muscle and Fitness for information and guidelines, but finding progress to be quite slow. This book changed everything. From the outset it is easily accessible but very informative, providing effective and revealing advice. As a result I am eating more healthily and effectively as regards to my training needs, and have found my progress to have quickened considerably. Extremely useful is the section on how much of carbs, protein and fat you need to eat for different goals (weight gain, fat loss, or sports-specific needs). It is ESSENTIAL reading to anyone who cares about their health, but especially for those who take their training and/or body composition seriously. Trust me, you'll be glad you bought this book!28

Gripping!
I bought this for my holiday a couple of days ago and made the mistake of opening it - finished it before holiday has even started! It is a gripping story well told. I don't know about apportioning blame etc but I thought he gave a pretty balanced view, in that he comes across as a thoughtful and fairminded person. Brilliant read - just need a replacement now!31

Cool as ice
This was one of the best biographies I have read this year. I was really surprised at how well the book is written. If anyone thinks the UFC athletes are just jobless brawlers PLEASE read this book.

In the book itself you find out how serious Chuck is about martial arts, not just fighting (even though he makes not secret that is his favourite part), but the discipline and dedication you need to be a serious martial artist.

One of the amazing thing about this book, is Chuck's ability to talk about his many accomplishments (and there are a hell of a lot of them) with out bragging. He gives his personal opinion on all the people he has met, from Dana White, to Tito, and everyone he has met and fought. This is a must read for all serious martial artists.
33

Just fab
This book covers the maths of poker in an indepth way. I found it reasonably easy to follow and enjoyed the way the maths is related to the game. I am slowly adopting a change in strategy to make full use of what I have learnt and I feel certain that it will pay dividends. The maths is heavy going but managable (although I am a high school maths teacher). The chapters on exploititive play are particularly interesting and I would say likely to be profitable for those able to invest the hours studying that the book requires. If your maths is not that strong (better than GCSE) you are probably better of spending your money elsewhere. Alevel maths students could buy it as a text book as much of the content is in the S1 and S2 modules, all non mathematicians have been warned.34

If you intend to buy this book go to the nearest bookshop and browse the pages first, it's very difficult to read and by page 92 I'd had enough.
I'm sure there is some good advice in the book but it's very difficult to get to the detail.
35

Excellent Pocket Bird Book
This book contains all the usual information that a good quality book on birds should carry within its pages. It covers 170 of the most commonly found birds in Britain and Ireland in a well laid out and easy to follow format. The illustrations by David Nurney are excellent and many bird enthusiasts prefer illustrations to photographs. For identification purposes they are first class.

This book features a bird per page and has all the usual features including descriptions of each bird's main characteristics including distribution of each species. The bird's plumage and behaviour patterns. RSPB books seem to go that extra mile with the information they provide the enthusiast.36

has all those unusual words you only use in Scrabble
For years I would judge a dictionary on it's quality by whether it had the words qat, zex, and jow in it, which of course none of them do, unless you pay an arm and a leg and get a dictionary that weighs an absolute tonne! Then I discovered this handy little volume which has all those strange scrabble words, a brief description (usually one word description), and my search was over. This dictionary is marvelous. Definately a must for anyone wanting to improve their game, or to silence those challenges over dubious looking words.37

bitter undertones
what i took most from this book is smith's constant slagging off of Emlyn Hughes. We are meant to believe that the great Bill Shankly took the captaincy of Liverpool from Smith and gave it to Hughes because Hughes had threatened to leave the club. Why Smith had to besmirk the character of Liverpool's greatest ever captain is non-sensical,and belongs in another book.If the book stuck to the subject matter it would of been much better.

38

Nice book but not for me....
I bought this book because I am completely new to running, I am running the race for life in June and I wanted hints on how to train safely. I thought that this would be the book I needed but I was wrong. Although the book is nicely put together it is a bit too American for me, also the need to calculate"stuff" put me off because I really haven't got a mathmatical mind. I think if you are that way inclined, it would be a useful book but not for me.39

Concise but thorough, just what I wanted
My bog-standard gym program was going nowhere. So I ordered this figuring I would make my own program, but thankfully, there's no need cause the author does it all for you.

What I really like is that he covers EVERY base, grouped into simple choices.
1. what kind of physique do you want (lean/toned/big/balanced)
2. how many days can you work out per week (from 1/2/3/4/5/6/7 days(!))
3. how long can you work out per session (from 10/15/20/30/45/60 mins)

And then he gives you FULL programs per session/day based on your combination of choices. Plus full and simple instructions on every single exercise, with up to 3 ways of doing each one, e.g. 3 options to do bicep curls depending on the equipment available and your personal preference.

There's also sections on nutrition and stretches, so I can't see how you can go wrong with this book to help you achieve your goals, however much time you've got to work out.

This is exactly what I wanted. It's only been a couple weeks so far into my program but I'm seeing definite benefits and leave each workout really knackered. I am being quite strict with diet, though, as calorie intake is key to get the results you want.

Overall, this book is probably the best one I've seen for normal people wanting to get into real shape without the bs of body-building evangelism. Highly recommended.

40

Simply one of the best biography I have read, up there with Tony Adams, Paul Merson and Paul McGrath.
