Make school more interesting
Tony Buzan has been at this mind mapping stuff for a while now and I wish someone had given me this book when I was at school. Its really easy to follow and before you know it your kids will be drawing colourful spider diagrams full of facts that help them with their school work. I gave one to my nephew and I've never seen him so interested in his homework.

Best Workout Book Ever
Judith is incredibly inspirational and encouraging without being the slightest bit patronising. She's not some 25 year old gym bunny you just want to smack, she does look fabulous for her age however.

The 30 days worth of workout recipes are really useful. What I do is put a bookmark on the page that has the day I'm working on, and then have the book open to the exercise recipe I'm doing. It's easy to flip back and forth if you do it smart ;)

Agree that a poster for the wall would be a GREAT inclusion in the book, but I don't think I'd put it up. I really appreciate the fact that a set of dumbells and this book are all my"home gym" need contain, and that's easily stowed away and out of sight.

I don't think illustrations are as important as words when describing an exercise - Judith explains in the words what muscules you'll be working, exactly how you should position your body, and what you should feel. She also explains why your hands go in certain places and warns you against injury. The photos are simply complimentary to the words. If she were your personal trainer, she'd be telling you what she's written in the book, not just handing you a bunch of pictures and fobbing off.

Play C.D. on PC
A benefit to playing the C.D. on a PC is that,on screen you get an indexed list of each bird that's playing although, surprisingly, not on disc 2.This can be overcome by going online, selecting the"View" tab at the top of the"Windows Media" screen, then select - Go To - followed by - Media Library. You then can download an index and where there are blank spaces go to - Edit and type in the missing species by referring to page 29 of the accompanying book.

Veggie Burgers - 'open the packet'...
I was searching for some kick-ass vegan recipes but this book really disappoints - filled with meat, cheese and even egg replacement products, it really lacks imagination and innovative recipes.

If you have just turned vegan or vegetarian then fair enough you can still have a 'chicken' sandwich or a 'tuno' sandwich but to those more seasoned this book lacks variety.

Mind Magic: Extraordinary Tricks To Mystify, Baffle and Entertain

Review:
Don't believe the hype
I bought this book having read the other reviews despite the wildly varying reactions expressed. Sadly I was let down.

The cover (as stated below) is the first clue - velvet effect embossing which does not like nice at all.

The content then rapidly goes downhill - if you ignore the dreadful style (more later) there are a couple of decent enough tricks in here, though none you wouldn't find in a less pretentious book. There are nowhere near enough to justify the asking price.

As to style, not only does it tell you exactly what dialogue to use (and it is the most patronising you can imagine) but the whole book suggests that maybe magic exists, and this book can help you appear clever to your friends. To me this panders to the lowest common denominator of wannabe magicians.

This will be going straight to the charity shop!

The Inquisitor's Handbook: The Ultimate Player's Guide (Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay): The Ultimate Player's Guide (Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay)

Our Price: £17.99 & this item Delivered FREE in the UK with Super Saver Delivery. See details & conditions
New Price: £17.99

Review:
Thought for the day: buy it!
The Inquisitor's Handbook delivers all it promises. Intriguing new career choices and a ton of equipment as well as more details on the Calixis sector, the area of space where all official adventures for Dark Heresy are supposed to take place.

Aside from some interesting new class variants such as the Feral Warrior, the Legate Investigator or the Chaliced Commissariat Operative as optional side-careers, the book also introduces a whole new career choice: that of the Adepta Sororitas.

The Adepta Sororitas career path, beginning at novice level, divides into three different branches (Dialogous/Famulous, Hospitaller and Militant) before joining again to culimate in the Legatine advance. The Inquisitor's Handbook provides all necessary information to play a Sisterhood character of each branch, although the famed Sisters of Battle will probably the most popular choice in your gaming group.

A possible issue with this new exciting career will be a Sister's desire to get power armor at rank 4 to stay true to the canon. However, clever GMs should have no problem with either working out a house-rule or explaining the need for secrecy (as the Sisterhood's Angel-pattern power armor is far too obvious for a covert investigation) to the player.

The zeal and fanatism of the Adepta Sororitas will surely be another challenge to all the players, depending on the group composition. Powerful Faith-based powers vaguely resembling the Sister's abilities from the Warhammer 40k tabletop make the game even more interesting, if used wisely and in the hands of an experienced player.

Aside from these new career options, the book also offers a few new origins for player characters, such as the Schola Progenum (very fitting for Sisterhood orphans) or Void-Born.

A very positive thing is the amount of background information ("fluff") which is provided in this book. This time, even all the weapons (and there are LOTS of them) get individual descriptions. Dozens of different stubber models appear next to new boltgun and lasgun patterns, accompanied by new armor and other useful gear. For convenience, all equipment is sorted into regions of appearance, such as"Hive" or"Warzone".

The only thing keeping me from awarding 5 stars to this book is the terrible amount of spelling and continuity errors throughout the book. Most times, these things don't bother at all, but there are a few instances when the book is actively irritating the reader - namely the visualized Adepta Sororitas career chart, which does not resemble the detailed description.

Despite the sour mass of typos, most of whom should easily have been detected during a proper spell-check, the Inquisitor's Handbook remains a solid expansion to the Dark Heresy game and should not be missed in any group roleplaying in the grim future of the 41st millennium.

Suffer not the witch to live!

i have since swum naked in the river torridge
Not everyone gets this book. I have given it to several likely suspects who were only half convinced. But for me it goes into my all-time greats. And has, and will, see me plunging into water for the sheer hell of it whenever i can. A 'wild swim' immediately turns the day into a special day. Deakin reminds us that just because no one else is, doesnt mean we cant. What a literary braindump of natural science, social history, geology, modernity, the human condition. A true eccentric, who held dear and firm his beliefs in this ever-changing world. Roger, I salute you!

Great subject - clumsy book
This is a classic climbing book and fascinating for anyone with a bit of basic climbing knowledge and a love of the mountains.
Like others, I read the part of the story about Toni Kurz dying on the face when I was a teenager and it had a profound impression on me.
All the basic stories and the mountain face are gripping but the writing style is appalling. When it gets to the tale of Longhi and Corti it becomes almost unreadably disjointed and as smooth as a bag of spanners.
A classic to read if you must - but if you want a great read on the same subject then spend your money on Joe Simpson's"The Beckoning Silence" - an infinitely better written book.
(By the way, Harrer's"seven years in Tibet" is a lot better).

Become a London-bore!
This is an excellent 'by the bed' book for dipping in and out of. Each section has a generous selection of interesting gems and more bizarre nuggets about the capital that will make any reader an instant London Bore or a valued member of any pub-quiz team (admittedly only for the London questions!). Certainly a book worth having even if you don't have a huge thirst for knowledge about London - this will gently change that without you even noticing.

Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect

Our Price: £4.99
Used Price: £2.95
New Price: £2.96

Review:
It's just common sense
Dr Bob Rotella is extremely well known in golf education for his advice on how to train your mind to play your best golf. He has helped some distinguished players including Tom Kite.

His basic philosophy is:
1. Believe you can achieve your golfing dream.
2. Have no swing thoughts or any thoughts about swing mechanics when you play.
3. Focus on a target for the ball: the smaller the better.
4. Stay in the present: forget previous shots (good and bad), don't think about the score for the round (good or bad). This will only distract you.

I have awarded this a one star. This is perhaps harsh, perhaps a three star would be appropriate but here is why I did:

My average handicap is 25 (27 in competition). I have been playing for three years and in the past 7 months as much as 5 or 6 times a week. I eat, sleep and dream golf. I devour new books and DVDs from the big names and some of the less well known.

I regularly watched the golf channel UK (RIP) and read Golf Digest online. My best rounds are around 85. My theoretical best (best scores per hole on different days) is 63.

In spite of starting this great game of golf at the age of 40, I've done well in many other sports and activities (squash, snowboarding, fencing, motorsport, aviation) and believe I should be able to play at a good level: regularly in the 80s and why not, with training and perseverance, in the 70s.

In short, my profile matches that of the target reader for this book. I had high expectations of this book and was hoping to discover new information and techniques on how to train my mind to get the best from my golf.

In reality, I found nothing new here. Most of the advice really is common sense and common place in all the golf related material I've encountered. Bob spends too much time covering what not to think. In the audio version, Bob drones on so much he sent me to sleep. Sadly, I have to say, the book is not worth the money and I can not recommend it.

The Best of Wainwright

Our Price: £6.99
Used Price: £3.94
New Price: £4.46

Review:
Excellent introduction to Wainwright
This is a charming (yet also practical) introduction to Wainwright’s series of Lake District guides, being a very personal response by an obvious aficionado. Much of the book consists of excerpts from the works themselves, with Wainwright’s maps and drawings; these are excellent in themselves, and well chosen - often, the selections are based on AW’s own ’Top Fells’ and ’Top Summits’ (not necessarily the same). Davies contributes illuminating and perceptive introductions to the excerpts, highlighting what is so special about AW - the meticulousness, the jokes (even cartoons), the comprehensiveness. Although there have been changes to the Lake District since the books were originally written, the fells themselves are largely unchanged, and this remains a useful practical guide, if used with an up-to-date map. AW - for this reader, anyway - emerges from the book with reputation enhanced.
